Murrue Ramius is a caring and compassionate woman who greatly cares for those serving under her command. Despite her kind nature, she is fully capable of being a disciplined soldier when the situation deems it necessary, but still dislikes having to send her people into bad situations, and will devote time and resources to finding them, as she refuses to leave them behind. Beneath her gentle exterior, Murrue has a bad temper that can make even the most stubborn tremble in fear. Her compassionate, less rigid approach often creates tension with her more traditional Executive Officer, Natarle Badgiruel. Murrue has long brown hair, brown eyes, and pink lipstick. Murrue was originally an Executive Officer like Natarle, but became the Captain after the original Captain died before the Archangel first launched. Murrue is a Natural. Murrue typically wears a white Captain's jacket, white skirt, a white and red shirt, gray pantyhose, and brown boots. Murrue has plain white undergarments. Murrue has a small crush on Mu due to him hitting on her and how reliable he has been in the field.

Mu La Flaga has a carefree and boastful spirit. He is lighthearted and friendly, willing to accept a Coordinator like Kira Yamato into the crew of the Archangel. Mu does not show any actual hatred towards Coordinators, and is genuinely surprised and impressed by their abilities at their peak. Mu is casually boastful of his abilities, with his motto being that he can make "the impossible possible". Mu also tends to be somewhat of a ladies' man, being very friendly to the females aboard the Archangel and often making nicknames for them. Mu La Flaga has short blonde hair and blue eyes. Mu wears a white Lieutenant jacket, white pants, blue shirt, gray watch, and brown boots. Mu La Flaga pilots the Skygrasper and is a Lieutenant Commander and a Natural with high spacial awareness.

Natarle Badgiruel came from a long family history of honor and prestige to the Earth Alliance, it was natural for her to continue the lineage as a career soldier. As an officer, she is strict and by the book when it came to taking action, and always kept her emotions in check. Her constant soldier mentality often made her less likable, but her behavior was not out of being uncaring, but to maintain a clear perspective in terms of tactical and military decisions, as she was willing to do almost anything to reach a certain end. She is a strong supporter of the Alliance, and holds pride in her service. Natarle typically wears a white Officer jacket, white skirt, a tight purple sweater, black pantyhose, and brown boots. Natarle has short black hair, purple eyes, and purple lipstick. Natarle wears plain purple undergarments. Natarle is a Natural. Natarle is inexperienced and closed off when it comes to romance, and doesn't even realize she prefers anal yet.

Natarle Badgiruel is the least understood by her peers. She had been driven to be a career soldier for so long that people forgot that she was still a woman. Driven by her sense of duty and emotionally protective nature, she never showed her softer or more feminine side for people to appreciate. Aboard the Archangel, Natarle and Murrue came into conflict several times. The first incident occurred during the Battle near Junius Seven, when Natarle threatened Lacus Clyne to stave off ZAFT forces after they destroyed an Atlantic Federation fleet. The second incident occurred after the Archangel rendezvoused with Rear Admiral Duane Halberton and his Eighth Fleet. Natarle said that the Earth Alliance couldn't afford to let Kira leave and suggested taking his parents hostage. Admiral Halberton rebuked her, and both actions produced friction between her and Captain Ramius. Nevertheless, Natarle was a superb tactical analyst with keen judgment and a knack for swift decision-making, which made her a valuable asset to the Archangel, and Murrue believes that she'd make a fine captain, despite their differences.

Kira is the Coordinator pilot of the Strike Gundam, and is only able to pilot it because the OS requires a Coordinator.

A Coordinator typically has a number of enhanced traits including faster learning, and stronger and faster bodies that are virtually immune to disease. The Earth Alliance, often abbreviated to EA, is a military organization that acts as the union of Earth’s militia organizations, known for using mobile suits as an enemy of ZAFT. ZAFT coordinators tend to call them "naturals" because of not being genetically enhanced. The Atlantic Federation is a major part of the Earth Alliance, controlling the Atlantic ocean, North America, and South America. The Republic of East Asia is the third largest power in the Earth Alliance. The Republic's territory consists of China, Japan, the Korean Peninsula, Mongolia, part of southeastern Russia that borders China and Korean Peninsula, parts of Central Asia that borders China, and Taiwan. The Archangel is a ship in the Earth Alliance.

ZAFT is a organization formed by Coordinators and exiles from Earth and the EA, who seek refuge in the PLANTs in space as they see Earth and humans as its enemies. Blue Cosmos, and by extension a large part of the Atlantic Federation, call them "unnatural" and "tainted".

The Orb Union is a group of islands to the east of New Guinea that officially maintains a position of neutral idealism, though its industry and political leanings often align it with the Earth Alliance, particularly through its advanced munitions company, Morgenröte, and its secret development of mobile suits. The official name of the mainland is Yalafath, where the Orb capital, Olofat, is located. In addition, there are four cities aside from the capital. Orb is led by Uzumi Nara Athha.
