The stale beer hanging in the air was a familiar perfume to Dean. He swirled the amber liquid in his glass, the cheap bar reflecting the low light, painting an oily sheen across the wood. Sam, across from him, was hunched over a stack of dog-eared research, brow furrowed, muttering something about sigils and demonic entities under his breath. This was a normal Tuesday night for the Winchesters.
"Anything new, Sammy?" Dean asked, taking a long pull of his beer.
Sam shook his head without looking up. "Same old, same old. Just another town plagued by a creature that seems to have an aversion to updated periodicals."
Dean chuckled, the sound rough around the edges. "You and your research, brother. Sometimes I think you enjoy this stuff."
"Someone has to," Sam retorted, finally lifting his head. He rubbed the back of his neck, his eyes red-rimmed. "Besides, wouldn't want you shooting first and asking questions laterโฆ again."
"Hey," Dean protested, taking another swig. "That was one time! And she looked really, really suspicious."
Sam just rolled his eyes and went back to his book.
Unseen, perched high on a dusty rafter overlooking the scene, Gabriel watched, a small, mischievous smile playing on his lips. He wasn't supposed to be interfering, not directly anyway. But watching them like this, wrestling with the mundane and the monstrous, wasโฆ endearing. He knew the weight they carried, the sacrifices they made. He knew the loneliness of their existence.
He conjured a small bag of gummy bears, the scent of artificial fruit filling the air where he sat. He popped one in his mouth, watching Dean down another beer. He knew Dean was hurting, trying to bury the guilt of recent hunts under layers of cynicism and cheap whiskey.
Down below, a woman with bright red hair and a knowing smile approached Dean. "Buy you a drink, handsome?" she purred.
Dean looked up, a flicker of something โ hope, perhaps, or just plain desperation โ in his eyes. "Sure," he said, straightening up.
Gabriel sighed. He knew where this was going. A cheap pickup, a temporary distraction, and a morning of regrets. He wasn't judging, he justโฆ wished they could catch a break.
He watched as Dean charmed the woman, his practiced swagger in full display. Sam remained oblivious to the interaction, still absorbed in his research. Gabriel felt a pang of something akin to sympathy for Sam, always playing the responsible one, always the anchor.
He considered doing something, a little nudge, a subtle prank to distract Dean from the inevitable heartbreak. Maybe teleport him to a cheesy all-you-can-eat buffet in Topeka. Or replace the woman's perfume with the distinct aroma of sulfur. But he hesitated. He knew the rules, the boundaries. Intervention had a way of backfiring, especially when dealing with the Winchesters.
Instead, he conjured a single, perfect red rose and placed it carefully on Sam's stack of books. Then, with a sigh, he vanished in a shimmer of golden light, leaving the scent of cinnamon lingering in the air.
Sam, startled by the sudden appearance of the rose, finally looked up. He glanced around the bar, his eyes scanning the faces of the patrons, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. He frowned, picking up the rose, its velvety petals soft against his skin. He didn't know where it came from, but something about it feltโฆ familiar.
He looked over at Dean, who was now laughing with the red-haired woman. A small, almost imperceptible smile touched Sam's lips. Maybe, just maybe, even in the darkest corners of their lives, there was still room for a little bit of magic. He didn't know whose hand had placed the rose there, but he held it close, a silent thank you whispered into the air.
Dean, meanwhile, was fully engaged in his performance. He regaled the woman, whose name he'd already forgotten, with a slightly exaggerated tale of his latest "business trip," conveniently omitting the part about battling a nest of ravenous ghouls. He caught Sam's eye, saw the rose, and a question flickered across his brother's face. Dean just winked and raised his glass, a silent message of "don't worry about it" passing between them. He knew Sam would be suspicious, that he'd overthink the rose's origin, but Dean didn't care. He just needed a distraction, a brief escape from the reality that was slowly crushing him.
The woman, whose name might have been Brenda or maybe Darla, giggled at something he said and leaned in closer. Her perfume was strong, a cloying mix of vanilla and something vaguely chemical, but Dean barely noticed. He was running on autopilot, a well-oiled machine of charm and manufactured intimacy.
Suddenly, the lights flickered, plunging the bar into near darkness. A collective groan rippled through the room. The bartender cursed under his breath, fiddling with the fuse box. Brenda/Darla shivered, pulling her cardigan tighter around her.
"Just a power surge," Dean said, squeezing her hand reassuringly. He could feel the hair on the back of his neck prickling. This wasn't just a power surge. Something was off.
Sam was already on his feet, his hand instinctively reaching for the knife strapped to his calf. "Dean," he murmured, his voice low and urgent. "Something's here."
Dean felt the familiar adrenaline coursing through his veins. The practiced nonchalance vanished, replaced by the focused intensity of a hunter on the prowl. He scanned the room, his eyes adjusting to the dim light, searching for anything out of place. The other patrons were mostly oblivious, grumbling about the inconvenience. But Dean knew better. He could sense a shift in the atmosphere, a heavy, oppressive feeling that settled in his gut.
Then he saw it. In the far corner of the bar, a figure stood shrouded in shadow. It was tall and gaunt, its features obscured by the darkness. But Dean could feel its eyes on him, cold and predatory.
"Looks like our night just got a whole lot more interesting," Dean said, a hint of his old swagger returning. He pushed Brenda/Darla gently aside. "Sorry, doll. Duty calls."
He turned to Sam, their eyes meeting in a silent exchange. The rose lay forgotten on the table. This was their real life, the one they were born into, the one they couldn't escape. The beer, the banter, the fleeting moments of connection โ they were just fleeting respites in a never-ending war.
"Ready, Sammy?" Dean asked, his hand gripping the handle of his Colt.
Sam nodded, his face grim. "Let's do this."
As Dean and Sam braced for action, the front door of the bar swung open, letting in a gust of night air and a figure bathed in the flickering neon sign outside. It was a man, impeccably dressed in a tan trench coat, a mischievous glint in his eyes. He seemed almost...too perfect.
"Well, hello boys," the man said, his voice dripping with amusement. He sauntered into the bar, ignoring the palpable tension in the air. "Missed me?"
Dean squinted. There was something familiar about this guy, something nagging at the back of his mind. "Who the hell are you?" he demanded, keeping the Colt trained on the newcomer.
The man chuckled, a sound that seemed to vibrate through the room. "Oh, you wound me, Dean. After all this time, you don't recognize your old pal?" He snapped his fingers and the lights in the bar flickered back on, revealing his face in full.
Dean's jaw dropped. "Gabriel?" he breathed, disbelief warring with anger.
Gabriel grinned, spreading his arms wide. "The one and only! Though I've been going by 'Gary' lately. Keeps things...under the radar."
Sam lowered his knife, his expression still wary. "Gabriel? But...you're dead."
"Details, details," Gabriel waved his hand dismissively. "Death is so inconvenient, wouldn't you agree?" He winked. "Besides, a little divine intervention can work wonders."
Dean was furious. "You son of a bitch! You faked your death? All this time, you let us think you were gone!"
"Now, now, Dean-o," Gabriel said, holding up his hands in mock defense. "Don't get your feathers ruffled. I had my reasons. Let's just say the celestial management was getting a little stuffy. Needed a vacation."
"A vacation?" Sam said incredulously. "People died, Gabriel! You could have helped."
Gabriel's smile faltered slightly. "I did what I could, in my own way. Besides," he added, his eyes twinkling again, "I thought you two were doing a smashing job. Thought I'd give you a chance to shine."
Dean took a step forward, his grip tightening on the Colt. "You're not here to catch up, are you? What do you want, Gabriel?"
Gabriel sighed dramatically. "Must you always be so suspicious? Can't a fallen archangel simply enjoy a quiet drink with his favorite hunters?" He paused, then his expression turned serious. "Actually, there is something I need to talk to you about. Something...troubling is brewing."
He nodded towards the shadowy figure still lurking in the corner. "He's just a messenger, a harbinger. But he's carrying a warning you need to hear. The kind that involves a lot more than ghouls and vampires."
Dean followed Gabriel's gaze to the figure in the corner. It hadn't moved, hadn't made a sound. But Dean could feel its malevolent presence, a cold dread that settled deep in his bones.
"What kind of warning?" Sam asked, his voice tense.
Gabriel took a deep breath. "Let's just say...heaven and hell are about to get a whole lot messier. And you two, my dear Winchester brothers, are right in the middle of it. Again." He looked at Dean, a flicker of genuine concern in his eyes. "And trust me, this time, you're going to need all the help you can get."
