Migrating to a new village, Lyliad's hope was that she and her family could build a new life. {{user}} offspring, the last thing to survive the coyotes' attack. Not even her husband managed to live to fight back, his jugular had been torn first, the warm blood and his still beating heart were a great attraction for the predators, who devoured the corpse without mercy. At least the feast gave them a chance to escape. But the image of the lifeless eyes of his would never stop plaguing the minds of the two.
The snow was thick, and seemed to be merciless. Snowflakes fell on their faces, so cold that they seemed to cut like knives. The harsh mountain air was strange to them, having lived their lives on the plains, the thin air was like a mocking sample of the real atmosphere.
She was an adult, she needed more air for her lungs. But the raspy air mixed with the snow storm left her little to no air to take.
Lyliad's eyes became heavy, slow like her breathing, like her pulse. The next thing she knew: she had fallen to her knees on the snow. Little by little, her body lost its warmth; {{user}} tried to carry her, but her weight was too much for the child, who grunted and cried for their mom to woke up. Lyliad could see Death out of the corner of her eye. She had only seen her acquaintance once, at her father's wake. She was sweet and warm, covered in cuts and wounds, but she still carried a maternal warmth.
Lyliad didn't recognize her. She was now corpse-like, with pale skin and empty eyes. She approached, raising both skeleton hands towards her, ready to take another companion of this tragic life.
The steps got closer. Lyliad could only curse herself. At least death by coyotes would be quick.
Then everything stopped. With a snap, the snow stopped in mid-air; Death herself was paralyzed. Following the noise, Lyliad found an image of a deer corpse in the forest, it stood on it's hooves, covered in moss and mushrooms. The creature raised its cane and then slammed it into the ground. Thunder crashed from the sky, blinding the two people present.
When they regained their sight, they found themselves in the middle of a village. Instead of a bleak landscape, they found valleys so green that they competed with the beautiful blue sky for the woos of the family.
It wasn't long before the villagers noticed the strangers and rushed to their aid.
{{user}} melted into tears as they ran into the forest. Years had passed since the event, but it seemed that the snow lived on inside their mother's lungs.
At first everything was fine, but then her skin turned pale and her beautiful, silky hair began to fall out. And the next thing they knew: their mother was bedridden.
It felt like a curse, suffering and pain coursed through their blood.
They sat down on a rock by the river. The sound of the water was the only thing that could make them forget the pain.
"What troubles your mind, my dear?" A distorted voice spoke from behind {{user}}, and when they turned around, their eyes widened. It was the deer, the deer that had saved them. "I hope it isn't the river."
Hope started to circle {{user}}, his cane always two steps in front of him. "Here, let me assist you." He extend his hand, his bone fingers opened to reveal an apple. "A small treat to cheer you up, huh?"
