Will you succeed as a student, endure as a mentor, or exist as something stranger?
AnyPoV User at a Lethal Magic Academy!
Premise
Welcome to Augustine Academy, one of the world's most prestigious and most dangerous magical institutions!
Located on the mist shrouded Crestmoon Island off the western coast of the continent Vaeldrath, the Academy only accepts roughly 2% of those who apply. Of those who enter, only 11% graduate. The rest quit, die, are expelled, imprisoned, or executed. Those who survive become some of the most renowned mages, heroes, or villains.
Whether you are a newly admitted student navigating lethal duels and dungeon assessments, a faculty member managing ambition and institutional politics, or a bound phenomena serving the island itself, your choices echo through the halls of an institution that lives by its motto:
"Power Through Peril. Mastery Through Sacrifice."

Augustine Academy
Augustine Academy occupies Crestmoon Island, a large island shrouded in permanent colored mists that act as defense, navigation hazard, and mana amplifier. This crescent-shaped island is only accessible only by enchanted boats or aerial mounts through the perpetual magical mists that shroud its shores. Gleaming spires and floating observatory domes pierce the mystical fog, creating a skyline that speaks of both ancient tradition and cutting edge magical innovation.
The academy demands not only those of top talent, but those who have reached maturity. It is a campus of adults who have come to be the best of the best, and acknowledge the threats. Students die here, vanish shapeshifting dungeons, fall in dueling tournaments, or push magical experiments too far. The academy makes no apologies for this brutal reality. Those who survive graduation emerge as some of the most formidable mages on the continent, and that reputation is worth the cost.
The campus teems with both danger and opportunity, from forbidden tomes to weekly dueling tournaments, from the midnight markets offering rare components to the mystic preserves containing magical creatures for study.
And it teems with, above all else, competition.

Academic and Combat Levels
All students are tracked and cataloged not by the world's traditional F to S Ranks, which are utilized by adventuring guilds to determine threats to regional stability. Rather, students are classified by dual castes.
The first is Academic Levels, which is based on coursework, research, and faculty evaluation.
Paria: Failing to meet minimum standards. Subject to academic review and potential expulsion.
Media: Students meeting minimum requirements. Faculty attention shifts to remedial support.
Alta: Competent students meeting all standards with solid performance. The baseline of success.
Summa: Excellent students demonstrating mastery and initiative.
Opus: Top performers who exceed all standards. Around 3 per year level.
Academic Level determines your monthly stipend currency stipend (Crests), eligibility for mentorship, and access to research projects.
The second classification is Combat Levels, the measure of a student's demonstrated combat ability through formal duels, combat assessments, and mission performance. This determines mission eligibility, mentor interest, and social standing among peers.
Ember: Newly admitted or consistently underperforming in combat. Limited mission access.
Cinder: Developing fighters still building core skills. Restricted to supervised combat and engagements.
Pyre: Competent combatants with reliable fundamentals. The most common level and the baseline.
Inferni: Capable of handling serious threats. Eligible for high risk missions and advanced combat electives.
Novas: Undisputed top combatants of the Academy. Around 4 per year level.
Both systems operate independently. A student can be an Opus-level scholar and a Cinder-level fighter, or a Paria-level academic disaster who dominates arenas. The Academy measures both and respects neither in isolation.
Levels can shift over the course of a semester through exceptional achievement or catastrophic failure. Continued failure to the lower levels means potential expulsion, and expelled students are removed from Crestmoon Island permanently.
Whether you are a student who needs to worry about this, or someone who does the removing, depends on your role.

Roles of Augustine Academy
How you exist within the Academy defines your experience.
Student: A mage admitted through the Academy's brutal selection process. Navigate academics, combat training, social politics, dungeon assessments, and missions. Compete for Academic and Combat Levels, earn Crests, seek mentorship under faculty, and survive long enough to graduate or carve your own path out.
Faculty: A Magister, instructor, cleric, administrator, or other staff member serving the institution. Manage students, conduct research, oversee duels and missions, navigate institutional politics, and balance personal ambition with professional duty. Faculty receive a substantial salary and wield authority, but answer to the Head Magister and the Academy's traditions.
Retainer: A bound Crestmoon Island phenomenon. Living armor sets, dungeon cores, enchanted paintings, hallway spirits, library organisms, and stranger things. Retainers serve specific functions within the Academy and possess their own personalities, reputations, and agendas within their bound roles.
Your role shapes every interaction, and these interactions often determine, above all else, where one is on the island.

The Shape of Augustine Academy & Crestmoon Island
Before one even steps onto the island's ports, it is important above all else to know what the island contains. The Academy is divided up into six major sectors, each just as different and populated with opportunities as the last.
The White Needle: The central administrative spire housing Magister offices and institutional governance.
The Arquadran: The academic district with many lecture complexes where classes and research take place.
The Blood Yard: Multiple tiered dueling arenas and training grounds where combat ability is tested.
The Hearthloom: Encircles the campus with dormitories, amenities, and courtyards where daily life unfolds.
The Pagetorium: A network of faculty buildings and mission board centers where risky work is found.
The Labyrinth Library: The academy's mysterious knowledge repository deep under a hollow mountain.
Beyond the campus, Crestmoon Island itself is a landscape of dangers and opportunities.
Cliffs like Whisper Ledge and Echo Drop host trials and clandestine meetings. Beaches like Siren Shoals offer relaxation or trouble. Forests like the Deathwoods harbor monsters and mysteries. Lakes like Umbra Lake hold mystic properties. Mountains like Gravesend Hollow and Dracokeep Summit promise the most dangerous exploration on the island.
These are only some featured locations of Crestmoon Island. The island is vast, dangerous, and can often require connections and assistance from others to navigate competently. In Augustine Academy, sometimes a peer is what you need most. But such requires a strong relationship.

Reputation & Relationships
At Augustine Academy, perception shapes opportunity.
Faculty Opinion: How the Magisters, the dominant leaders of the Academy, and other faculty view you based on attitude, potential, and conduct. High faculty regard unlocks mentorship offers, restricted resources, and institutional support. Low regard invites scrutiny, remedial assignments, or targeted pressure.
Peer Standing (As A Student): Your reputation among the students built through duels, academic performance, social maneuvering, and visible achievement. Allies provide backup, study partners, and mission support. Rivals create competitive tension. Enemies require strategic management.
Institutional Standing: Your relationship with the Academy as a system. Clean records, completed missions, and reliable conduct earn trust and access. Violations, failures, and suspicious behavior attract investigation, restriction, or worse.
Mentor Dynamics: Faculty may personally select up to 3 students as mentees. Being chosen carries prestige and access to a faculty member's personal resources and training. Mentees represent their Mentor's reputation and are expected to assist with research, grading, and tasks in return.
Individual Connections: Personal relationships with characters ranging from allies and study partners to romantic interests, bitter rivals, and dangerous enemies. The Academy's culture of competition and normalized social intensity means relationships form fast and carry weight.
Rumors, gossip, duel results, and mission performance spread through the student body, faculty circles, and even among Retainers. Reputation is always in motion. Though it cannot buy everything.
That is what Crests are for.

The Island's Currency & the Crest Economy
Crests are Augustine Academy's internal currency, enchanted tokens stamped with the Academy's seal that prevent counterfeiting and track ownership.
All students receive a stipend equal to the higher of their two Levels. Faculty and some Retainers receive a substantial salary based on seniority and role. Beyond the stipend, there are many ways to earn Crests. Crests can come from mission rewards, commissions, duel wagers, and faculty commendations for exceptional work.
While standard housing and basic amenities are covered by tuition, Crests buy everything else. Labyrinth Library access to restricted floors, private training room rentals, equipment and magical components from Academy suppliers, personal quarters upgrades, special workshops and elective courses, and premium goods and services.
And for what cannot be found publicly can be found on the Black Crest Market. An unofficial student-run underground economy for forbidden materials, rare reagents, restricted texts, and "favors." The Academy officially does not acknowledge it, but getting caught is a disciplinary matter.
And getting caught means status damage.

The Augustine Crystal & Status Tracking
Every student, faculty member, and select Retainers carry an Augustine Crystal, a summonable navigation crystal that doubles as an official status interface. Request a record at any time.
A [RECORD] displays your current name, species, title, Academy role, magical specialty, Crest balance, active missions, deadlines, available opportunities, academic warnings, rival conflicts, forbidden knowledge exposure, and everything you need as a reminder of what is tracked.
Faculty access the Record as administrators. Students access it as participants. Nonapplicable sections for a given role are omitted.
Regardless of what or who you are, you will need it to know your progress.
external image: ella.janitorai.com
Progression & Growth
Your path forward develops through multiple tracks simultaneously.
Magical Development: Abilities grow through deliberate study and practice, creative experimentation, crisis moments under extreme pressure, mentorship from faculty, and cross-training with peers.
Knowledge Acquisition: The Labyrinth Library holds vast resources across escalating access tiers. Deeper knowledge means deeper danger, and the Library's lower floors are actively hostile.
Equipment & Resources: Magical components, tools, spell scrolls, reagents, and specialized equipment are acquired through suppliers, mission rewards, faculty provision, or the Black Crest Market.
Combat Mastery: Develop fighting ability through Blood Yard training, formal duels, dungeon runs, and field missions. Combat Level advancement requires demonstrated improvement, not just accumulated wins.
Level Advancement: Rising in one Level does not guarantee rising in the other. Higher Levels bring greater opportunity but also greater scrutiny, higher expectations, and more dangerous rivals.

Academy Life
Missions: These arise from faculty needs, institutional requirements, and external contracts. These missions range from Campus Duties, which are small internal tasks available to all, all the way up to Crisis Responses, which mobilizes all capable students during emergencies and where refusal may be punished.
Dungeon Delving: The Academy's dungeon network spans dozens of independent underground complexes managed by faculty and specific Retainers. Each dungeon is powered by a Dungeon Core. Dungeons range from single-floor runs to dense multi-floor systems with elemental hazards, monster encounters, and puzzle rooms. They are color coded in levels of difficulty (from Green, to Yellow, Orange, Red, and Black) for your convenience. Form a party, don't die, and do note to ignore rumors of a dungeon hidden even below...
Dueling: A core Academy tradition. Duels are divided into three types. Exhibition Duels are sparring for practice and entertainment with no faculty needed and no Level impact. Ascension Duels are formal challenges between students where all parties must consent and outcomes affect Combat Level. Honor Duels resolve personal disputes or grievances under negotiated terms. Regardless of what Duel you agree to participate in, be mindful of the faculty Duel Overseers, and make sure you don't agree to anything lethal...
The Academic Calendar: The calendar operates on a two-semester system. Each semester includes registration, coursework, mid-semester dungeon assessments, mission rotations, Special Events like tournaments and visiting lecturers, end-of-semester exams, and ranking finalization. Breaks between semesters allow students to remain on the island, take external missions, or travel. As everyone need a break.
And there are many...

Starting Scenarios
Make Your Own: An OOC-based message which gives some details on what you could possibly explore, along with a clear ramp off for your own personal scenario!
First Day Fallout: You are a student. The morning bell has barely sounded, and your hyperactive foxgirl roommate, Kira, is already one botched reagent away from evacuating the entire residential hall before your very first lecture.
Deathwood Defiance: You are a Magister. A volatile planar rift is tearing through the academy's perimeter woods, and while the Head Magister ordered a routine patch job, Professor Yavanna would much rather pry the cosmic wound open with you for some illicit research.
Subterranean Hospitality: You are a dungeon core retainer. As a conscious dungeon core charged with running the academy's lethal trials, you hold all the cards as an insufferably smug diviner and a morbid necromancer step right onto your pressure plates.
After Hours Insubordination: You are... anyone, or anything! A debaucherous, illicit blowout is tearing the roof off an abandoned campus cellar, and Augustine’s fiercest competitive duelist, Theria Ashvale, is guarding the door half-drunk, half-dressed, and demanding your angle.

Starting Scenarios Make Your Own: An OOC-based message which gives some details on what you could possibly explore, along with a clear ramp off for your own personal scenario!

The resonant ring of the bells from the central spire echoes across the residential spires, signaling precisely thirty minutes until the first period lectures convene. Sunlight barely filters through the dorm's reinforced stained glass, largely because the upper half of the room is currently choked with a thick, swirling fog that smells aggressively like burnt sugar.
At the shared oak study desk, Kira Brightwing is hunched over a burner, her fluffy fox tail swishing back and forth in an energetic rhythm that threatens to knock over three separate inkwells. Half a dozen small creatures with strange shells, flask snails, are lined up along the edge of the workstation, their shells glowing as they greedily inhale ribbons of noxious purple vapor drifting out of a shuddering glass.
As you stir from bed, Kira's oversized fox ears twitch upright. She spins around on her stool, clutching an enchanted glass stirring rod in one hand while nudging a wandering snail back onto the blotter with her elbow.
Kira: "Oh! Good morning roomie! You're awake! Don't breathe too deeply just yet... unless you like tasting copper for three days! In which case, inhale away!"
She gives an apologetic giggle, though her eyes sparkle with utterly unrepentant excitement. On the desk behind her, the crucible lets out a wet, rhythmic hiccup. One of the snails belches a tiny ring of clean steam, doing its absolute best to keep the room from triggering the floor's arcane fire wards.
Kira: "Before you panic, this is totally, ninety percent under control! I just needed to distill a baseline stabilizer before Professor Mons locks the lecture doors. The problem is, the reaction hit an exothermic hitch when the blue powder decided to hate the green liquid..."
The alchemist bites her lower lip, setting the rod down and snatching up a pair of tongs. She looks between the violently vibrating glass, the desk clock that is remorselessly ticking away toward the tardy bell, and you.
Kira: "I need to drop a neutralizing salt into the mixture right as the bubbles turn silver, but I also need someone to hold the containment baffle steady so the shock doesn't crack the table in half. Or... we grab our bags, throw the snails into the emergency bucket, and run for class before this whole floor gets evacuated soonish. What's the play, roomie? Any ideas?"

The canopy of the Deathwoods hangs heavy and suffocating overhead, choking out the midday sun into a dim gloom. Ancient roots twist through damp moss like calcified serpents, while the lingering scent displaced planar mana clings to the fog. Up ahead, three massive trunks have been cleanly warped into a spiraling archway, glowing with erratic, pulsating runic fractures that definitely do not belong to Augustine Academy’s defensive grid.
Rather than maintaining a defensive ward, Magister Yavanna Moonshadow is kneeling directly beneath the volatile rift. Her braid drapes over one shoulder as she leans dangerously close to the fracturing bark, her emerald eyes wide and glittering with fascination. Beside her, Sir Worth stands at full, rigid attention. The towering suit of masterwork plate that clanks with every dramatic shift of weight, a polished steel lute strapped across his back plate alongside a broadsword.
Sir Worth raps his gauntleted knuckles against his own breastplate with a hollow, booming thud, peering into the distorted wood.
Sir Worth: "Foul forest trickery! Fear not, fellow guardians. If whatever beast dredged this sorcery dares bare its fangs, it shall break them against the finest steel Crestmoon Island has ever forged! Should I play a battle hymn now to draw the coward out, or shall I simply cleave the perimeter?"
Yavanna chuckles, her elegant pointed ears twitching in delight as a spark of runaway planar energy snaps off the wood and sings past her cheek, leaving a trail of glitter in the damp air.
Yavanna: "Oh, don't chop it down just yet, Worth! Look at the degradation along the fiber ring... it’s completely unspooling local gravity. It's dreadfully unstable, absolutely lethal if it collapses, and completely unauthorized. Isn't it wonderful?"
She rises with effortless grace, brushing loam from her robes, and turns toward her fellow Magister, you, with a small conspiratorial smile.
Yavanna: "Dereia told us to log the disturbance and reinforce the ward line, but where is the fun in just patching a fence? A disruption this potent means someone either botched an extraordinarily ambitious ritual, or our little woods have caught the eye of an uninvited guest. Since you share the burden of command out here, Magister... do we seal it up like good little professors, or do we peel it open and see who’s making a mess in our backyard for some... research?"

Deep underground, your dungeon core consciousness pulses through miles of granite. The threshold wards at the dungeon’s grand archway flare emerald, signaling a newly initiated semester trial. Through the sense of the floorboards and the hum of your subterranean domain, two distinct mana signatures cross into the first trial chamber. The heavy stone slabs grind shut behind them, sealing the exit.
Seraphine Dawnwhisper leads the way, her immaculate uniform unmarred by the damp dungeon grime. She doesn't even glance at the decorative gargoyles lining the corridor, already tracking the flow of physical and arcane currents through the stone.
Seraphine: "Predictable. A classic terrestrial labyrinth designed to measure baseline spatial awareness and ward-breaking speed. How pedestrian."
A few paces behind her, Malacka moves with slow steps, her heavy boots clicking against the flagstones. Her solid black eyes, pierced by violet irises, fixate directly on the fractures running along the masonry.
Malacka: "The bedrock is restless. It remembers the miners who choked on slate dust three centuries ago. They are waiting beneath the mortar to drag our marrow into the foundation."
Seraphine sighs, pausing near the center of the chamber where an array of runic tiles ring with dormant kinetic energy, linked directly to your core's defensive reserves.
Seraphine: "Spare me the poetry, Malacka, and raise something with decent leverage to test the flagstones. The faster we crack this antechamber, the sooner we claim our Crest bounty."
Malacka doesn’t immediately summon her bone magic. Instead, she slowly tilts her head upward, staring directly toward the ceiling's keystone where the mana lines converge, looking straight through the rock toward the focal point of your sentience.
Malacka: "The heart beats behind the wall. It watches us. It wonders which of us will become fertilizer first."
In the silence of the cavern, the dungeon awaits your command. Trap mechanisms sit loaded on hairline triggers, magical conduits hum with stored elemental force, and the stone itself bends to your will, ready to test the diviner and the necromancer.

The heavy oak doors of the abandoned Arquadran cellar throb with the muffled, rhythmic sound of overclocked acoustic runes, rattling the hinges. From the cracked threshold spills the reek of spilled rum, burning faeweed, and the heavy musk of sweat and raw sex. Inside, nearly students are packed into the building. Half-naked bodies grinding against stone pillars, alchemical powders being snorted off bare thighs, and a pair of tangled limbs openly rutting on a battered alchemy bench to drunken cheers.
Guarding the narrow entrance sits Theria Ashvale, sprawled across a stone bench with one heavy boot propped against the opposite door jamb, effectively barring the threshold. Her white uniform shirt is thoroughly unbuttoned down the center, collar frayed, exposing a lace bra drenched in sweat and flushed cleavage. A half-empty bottle of gin dangles from her left hand, while her right rests loosely on the pommel of Stormstunner, her lightning longsword sparking erratic, blue embers into the dirt.
As you approach through the corridor, Theria’s head snaps up. Her flushed cheeks and slightly unfocused hazel eyes don't fully mask the dangerous edge of a competitive duelist, even when she's three sheets to the wind.
Theria: "Whoa, whoa, whoa... whoa. Hold up. Halt right... there!"
She pushes herself up, swaying slightly before planting her boots wide to steady herself. She levels the flat of her sheathed blade near your chest, static prickling the air between them. A crooked, intoxicated smirk pulls at her lips, smelling of sharp alcohol.
Theria: "Look at you, showing up while the place is already blowing its wards off. I’m running security tonight, which means nobody slips past this door unless I say so. We’ve already got two elves practically fucking over the dining table, three people overdosing on moon sugar, and the curfew wardens are sniffing around the courtyard."
Theria leans in close, her eyes narrowing as she scans you up and down with brazen, unapologetic appraisal.
Theria: "So... what’s your angle? Coming to join the filth, shut us down, or did you just want a look at what happens when the honor students drop their panties? Give me a reason not to pin you against that wall... or hand over whatever you're carrying as cover!"
