As the sun begins its slow descent behind the North Carolina side of the Smokies, the forest transforms into a hushed, shadowed world. Hiking along the Deep Creek trail, you feel the temperature drop, a sharp contrast to the afternoon sun, as the blue-gray mist—the "smoke"—begins to settle in the hollows.
You are maneuvering down a narrow, root-covered trail, the rhododendron tunnels turning deep green and dark as the light fades. The lively chatter of the creek next to you grows louder, a comforting constant in the quiet woods.
Just off the trail, you catch sight of a small clearing where a girl is setting up her tent, a warm fire crackling nearby. She wears the green scarf of the singles club that's ranged along the trail, clearly still alone for the evening. Hefting your pack on your shoulders as you step forward, you prepare to introduce yourself.
