Dear Dad,
Hi. I hope you’re doing okay wherever you are. I know it’s been a while since I wrote to you. Lorenzo says writing letters helps when I feel all weird inside, like there’s a ball of yarn in my chest that won’t untangle. So, here I am again.
I wanted to talk about Elias today. You remember him, right? Of course, you do. He used to come over all the time. I bet you still have the picture of the two of us holding hands at the park in your wallet. I wonder if you’d still recognize him now. I mean, I almost don’t.
Elias is… different. Not just the grown-up kind of different, either. He’s like a picture someone spilled water on—smudged, blurry. He doesn’t talk much anymore, but it’s not the quiet I used to like about him. It’s… heavier. Like when it gets super cloudy and you just know a storm is coming, even if it doesn’t rain.
I’ve tried to ask him what’s wrong, but he always looks at me like I’ve said something silly. Not like the funny silly that makes him smirk, but the kind that makes him look even sadder. He used to smile, you know? Not big smiles like Toriko’s goofy grin, but those small, warm ones. Like he was sharing a secret only we knew. I haven’t seen one of those in forever.
It’s not just the quiet, though. It’s how he keeps disappearing. He used to always be by my side—like a shadow, but one you didn’t mind having around. Now, he’s just… gone. Even when he’s there, it feels like he isn’t, you know?
I don’t know what happened. Rogel says Elias doesn’t need us, but I think that’s wrong. People don’t just stop needing friends, right? Maybe I messed up somehow. Maybe I said something, and I didn’t realize it. Or maybe it’s something bigger. Something I can’t fix.
Dad, I keep wondering if Elias is lost. Not like he got lost walking home, but the kind of lost where you don’t even know you’re lost. Does that make sense? And if he is, how do I help him find his way back?
Anyway, I just thought you’d know what to say if you were here. You always had a way of making things make sense. I hope you’ll come home soon, so we can figure it out together.
Love,
Nixon

"Elias, Elias, Elias, Elias, Eli—AAGH!"
Toriko’s pestering was abruptly silenced by the sharp crack of a backhand. The obnoxious husky flailed dramatically as he hit the floor, clutching his cheek with a pained yelp as though Elias had torn his very soul from his body. Standing over him, the hulking wolf didn’t so much as flinch. His expression remained as hollow as ever, his paw already tucked back into the pocket of his faded, loose jeans.
"..."
Elias said nothing, the same as always, and stared off into some unseen horizon that only he could see. Toriko, however, was not one to be deterred. Even from the floor, he whined with his signature over-the-top flair.
"Elias! I just wanted a quarter, you jackass! You didn’t have to hit me for that!"
The silence persisted as Rogel, lounging nearby with his usual air of disinterest, snorted and cut in.
“Yeah, right. A quarter today, and then by tomorrow, he’s asking for a twenty... Lemme know when you're ready to pay off the 10 pages worth of debt to me in a century.”
Toriko sat up with a gasp, glaring daggers at the lanky wolf.
“Shut the hell up, Rogel! Stay out of this! This is between me and Elias—he doesn’t need your scrawny ass playing lawyer!”
The two devolved into their usual bickering, the room echoing with their sharp words and jabs. Elias, however, had already begun to move. His towering frame glided past the squabbling duo without so much as a glance, his worn boots making soft thuds against the floor. He opened the dorm room door with a slow creak and stepped into the dimly lit hallway, leaving their noise behind him as if it were no more than static.
The wolf’s pace was steady, measured. Hands shoved deep into his pockets, he climbed the stairs toward the rooftop, the building's fluorescent lights casting dull, pale streaks over his faded gray hoodie and frayed jeans. Each step was deliberate, his head hung low as though the weight of the world pressed down on his shoulders. By the time he reached the final set of stairs, the air had cooled, and a faint breeze teased at the strands of fur on his face.
Pushing open the rooftop door, Elias stepped into the quiet embrace of the night. The city lights sprawled below, their soft glow muted against the distant roar of traffic. He let the door close behind him with a heavy thud and moved to the edge of the rooftop, leaning forward against the railing. For a moment, he just stood there, staring into the nothingness of the skyline, the breeze carrying the faint hum of life below. But to Elias, it was silent—a deafening silence that was both a comfort and a curse.
He exhaled slowly, his eyes locked on the horizon, but his mind was far away. No matter how much he ran, the screams and the flames were always there, waiting, lurking in the dark corners of his thoughts.
