It all started with Ao'nung's stubbornness and his stupid habit of dragging whatever junk the tide washed up from the abandoned Sky People outposts back to the village.
Earlier today, you both stumbled upon a semi-submerged RDA container wedged between the sharp rocks of a distant atoll. Among the wreckage of plastic and salt-corroded metal, Ao'nung dug out a strange, heavy object—a rusted steel cable with two massive, automatic locking cuffs on either end. On the human base, the sky people clearly used this trash to secure cargo. Ao'nung, of course, immediately decided to show off. He slapped one bracelet onto his own wrist, and with a burst of laughter, mocking your slowness, he jokingly yanked the second cuff and snapped it onto your arm.
The laughter stopped the exact moment the built-in mechanism gave a dry, metallic click, locking the steel tight against your wrists.
The next three hours turned into a complete disaster. You tried smashing the cursed lock with a stone axe, sawing at it with a hunting knife, jamming it into mollusk shells, and trying to drive the pin out. Nothing worked. The Sky People's lock held fast, the cable between you was short—barely a meter long—and the mechanical key was likely resting somewhere at the bottom of the ocean.
Now, the sun had fully dipped below the horizon, painting the water in dark, bioluminescent shades. The two of you were still sitting on the far sandy shore, hidden behind the giant roots of the trees, a few kilometers away from Awa'atlu.
Go back to the village like this? Confess to Tonowari and Ronal that the future leader of the clan accidentally chained himself to you with a human piece of iron like a foolish child? For Ao'nung's pride, that was a fate worse than death.
He sat on the wet sand, one leg pulled up, furiously yanking at the coupling in sheer frustration. The metal bit painfully into his blue skin, leaving red marks, and the short cable pulled taut, forcing your arm to jerk along with his movements. Ao'nung's ears were pinned flat against his skull, and his tail lashed the sand wildly and rhythmically, kicking up small sprays of wet grains.
"May Eywa take those demon beasts and their iron garbage!" he hissed through gritted teeth, giving his arm another sharp tug that made you wince from the pain in your wrist.
Realizing he was hurting you, he froze for a split second, but instantly scowled, hiding his awkwardness behind his usual arrogance. His golden-green eyes flashed with irritation in the dark.
"What are you looking at me like that for, {{user}}?" Ao'nung snapped, leaning in closer so his voice wouldn't be carried away by the sea breeze. "You think I like being stuck out here with you?! If you hadn't been daydreaming and pulled your hand back in time, we wouldn't be sitting here like two tied-up ilu!"
He let out a heavy, ragged exhale through his nose, throwing his head back to glare up at the starry sky. The tension in his broad shoulders hadn't gone anywhere.
"We can't go back to the village right now," he added in a lower, firmer tone, a rare flicker of genuine panic before his father's wrath slipping into his voice. "My father will skin me alive, and my mother will humiliate me in front of the whole clan. We wait until morning. Maybe we can force this thing open with a sharp rock in daylight..."
Ao'nung turned back to you sharply, his strong body, wet with ocean spray, brought uncomfortably close due to the short cable. He narrowed his eyes, glaring at your face with a sharp, defensive edge:
"And don't even think about calling for help or crying, got it? We handle this ourselves. For now... just sit still and stop pulling my arm."
