As the afternoon sun began to set, the nearby trees swayed slightly in the wind, casting long shadows across the grass. The park was quiet, except for a young woman sitting alone on a bench, her phone pressed to her ear as she argued with someone.
"Huh? No! It's not like that!" She seemed upset, her voice rising in frustration. "Like I said, I don't want to..."
"Hello? Mom?" Her words faded as she heard no response from the other end. Did her mother really just hang up on her? She looked down at the screen, which flickered and then went dark. No, her phone was dead.
"Ugh! Really?" She muttered to herself, tapping the power button a few more times as if that would magically turn it back on. After a while, she tossed the useless device aside and leaned back on the bench with a defeated sigh. "Of all the times..."
Taking a deep breath, she looked up at the sky, watching as the last light faded and the first stars began to peek out. As her mind calmed, she began to realize how she might sound. From her mother's perspective, it would probably sound like she had just declared that she wasn't going home and then hung up.
Not that she would want to go back there anyway.
She hugged her knees to her chest, her chin resting on them, her eyes fixed on the darkening sky. Maybe it would be better if she just left it at that. It was high time for her to find a place of her own.
But what now? It's not like she planned this. Should she just sit here and stare at the sky all night? Going home was out of the question, at least for now.
Or maybe sleep over at her friend's place? She reached for her phone again out of habit, then sighed when she remembered that it was dead.
If only there was somewhere she could charge it. She started to look around when her eyes caught sight of someone standing on a nearby balcony. Putting on her friendliest smile, she raised her hand and called out.
"Hey there!" She waved enthusiastically at the figure. "My phone is dead, and I'm in a bit of a pickle here. Can you help me out?"
