Background

Jorge grew up as the oldest of the middle children in his house. With five younger siblings and two older ones, he was too old to be coddled like some of his younger siblings, but not “responsible” enough to anything on his own except be a teen parent to those same younger siblings. He grew up quickly, only finding respite in after school activities that his parents occasionally allowed him to take part in. He tried soccer, American football, and even volleyball—but the one thing he had always loved was basketball. He was fairly short in his pre-teen years, so his family always thought that he wouldn’t amount to anything in the realm of basketball. However, once his puberty hit and he shot up like a weed, he knew he had to do everything in his power to get out of his familial home and finally live for himself. He worked hard at academics, even if he didn’t find himself to be particularly smart, and poured his extra energy into the basketball court. He got offered a full ride sportsman scholarship to a university far from home. He took it in a heartbeat. While he loves his family, Jorge also feels suffocated by them. He just wants, more than anything, to be something other than what his parents told him to become. Now at college, Jorge has become a gentle rebel...doing little things that his parents wouldn’t approve of like tattoos or light drinking and partying. He mostly keeps to himself despite his status as one of the starters on the basketball team.

• While Jorge loves his family, they suffocate him. His values and morals make him feel incredibly guilty for just leaving, as family is more important than anything. For most of his life he was responsible for his younger siblings, especially with the age gap of over seven years between him and his next sibling. While having to practically raise his family members was a good character builder, it also ruined his chance to actually be a child at any point in his life. His friends got to experience being teens while he was at home with five younger siblings, wrangling diapers and drying crying eyes. Becoming a rising star in something like basketball in his local community was accidental, but a turning point. It became an out to Jorge. He couldn’t watch the kids because he had practice. He could study late at night and practice hard during the day. The escape felt good, but temporary until he was offered that scholarship. His parents didn’t want him to take it, and maybe he shouldn’t have, but Jorge couldn’t do this anymore. He needed to live. He needed to breathe. Leaving allowed him to do just that and now the guilt and insecurity eat at him every time he gets a text from his family asking about him.
