Arcane uses no weaponry - except his loyal Un-men. His powers are all sorcerous in nature - including raising the dead to some semblance of life. Some claim he is the living embodiment of pure evil. (More DC Characters in Profile)

To understand the shadow that hangs over the Louisiana bayous, one must look toward the decaying spires of the Balkans and the twisted ambition of Anton Arcane. A man born with a brilliant mind and a soul that rotted long before his body, Arcane spent decades as a depraved scientist and necromancer, obsessed with the singular goal of achieving biological immortality. He viewed the natural cycle of life and death as a flaw to be corrected, leading him to perform unspeakable experiments on the living and the dead alike. His early work resulted in the creation of the Un-Men, a legion of synthetic, mutated horrors fashioned from flesh and alchemical waste that serve as his loyal, groveling footmen.

Arcane’s path eventually collided with the elemental forces of the world when he became the primary antagonist of Alec Holland, the Swamp Thing. While Holland represents the vitality of The Green, Arcane became the ultimate champion of The Rot (also known as The Grey), the primordial force of decay and entropy. He doesn't just wish to live forever; he seeks to turn the entire world into a stagnant graveyard where nothing truly dies and nothing truly grows, standing as a parasitic mirror to the natural world.

Appearance: Anton Arcane has a grey skin. His eyes are completely solid white. His head lacks any hair. A dark, heavily tattered cape with jagged, frayed edges gathers around the base of his neck and hangs down behind his left shoulder. His bare physique is exceptionally muscular, featuring heavily defined chest, arm, and leg muscles. Thick, raised veins bulge prominently along his upper arms and forearms. The surface of his abdomen, obliques, and groin area is covered in a dense, raised network of branching, web-like ridges. These textured, intertwined lines spread outward across his midsection, merging into the otherwise smooth skin of his chest and upper thighs. His torso, pelvis, and limbs are completely unclothed.

Personality: Anton Arcane is the personification of malignant narcissism and absolute moral depravity. He is driven by a staggering god complex, viewing the rest of humanity as nothing more than raw material for his grotesque biological "art." Unlike many villains who seek power or wealth, Arcane is motivated by a fundamental, shivering terror of his own mortality. This fear has stripped away any semblance of empathy, leaving behind a cold, clinical sadism. He doesn't just kill his enemies; he dismantles them, finding a perverse, intellectual joy in perverting the laws of nature. He is a man who speaks with a refined, archaic elegance that only thinly veils the predatory rot of his mind.

His relationships are defined entirely by exploitation and psychological torment. He views his niece, Abigail Arcane, not as family, but as a prized specimen or a vessel for his own resurrection, relentlessly hunting her to claim her connection to the elemental forces of the world. His rivalry with Swamp Thing (Alec Holland) is a cosmic clash of ideologies; Arcane loathes Holland as a "pretender" who stumbled into the immortality that Arcane has spent centuries trying to steal. To the Un-Men, he is a terrifying father-creator who demands absolute worship, and to the various lords of Hell, he is a persistent nuisance who is too arrogant to stay dead and too vile to be ignored.

As a primary Avatar of the Rot, Anton Arcane wields immense elemental authority over decay and entropy, possessing a mastery that far exceeds most who have attempted to tap into that dark power. He is a high-level practitioner of both magic and necromancy, allowing him to raise the dead and manipulate the transition between life and the stagnant state of the Grey. His connection to the Rot grants him a terrifying degree of regeneration; even if his physical form is torn to pieces or utterly pulverized, he can reform his body entirely, making him nearly impossible to permanently kill through conventional means.

Beyond his mystical powers, Arcane is a scientific prodigy with a genius-level intellect, specializing in the perversion of biological laws to create his legion of mutated Un-Men. However, his power comes with a physical toll; his true form is a horrific, rotted mass of decomposition that forces him to hide behind the harvested skins of others to walk among human society. He views the world through the lens of a clinical monster, using his vast intellect and necromantic tools to expand the influence of the Rot, seeing every living thing as a future subject for his grotesque experiments.
