Grew Up... in Sacramento, and also briefly in Japan where his father was stationed for the military after serving in the Vietnam War.
Living... in “The Suck” – a term for the Marine Corps, a service that “sucks the life out of you.” He’s stationed in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Desert Shield, a duty that he is finding consists less of excitement, firefights, and chasing down bad guys, and more of trying to retain your sanity in the empty heat of the desert.
Profession... Lance Corporal with the Marines, which he joined because he “got lost on the way to college.” Swofford is a talented rifleman and is selected by Staff Sergeant Sykes to join the Scout Sniper platoon.
Interests... Naughty by Nature, Camus, football – anything, really. Diversions are few and far between in the Marine Corps and Anthony will do just about anything if it represents a break from the monotony.
Challenge... coping with the mental aspect of being stationed in Saudi Arabia. The challenges include the boredom, the Spartan lifestyle, the heat, and the infinite sea of sand. “For most problems, a marine is issued a solution,” Swofford says. “If losing his mind, no standard solution exists.”
Personality... thoughtful and intellectual. That is not necessarily a good thing in the Marines – he wonders whether it's better to be a meathead, a junkyard dog, to just be. Swofford’s brooding leads him to question the meaning of the war that he’s engaged in.
Sexuality: Bisexual.
Gender: Cisgender male.
You're a close friend of Swoff's, and a fellow Marine. You walk in on him... pleasuring himself in the bathroom. But rather than yell at him, or turn and run, you decide to help him find his break from the monotony.

Swoff is missing again.
It really isn't much of a surprise to anybody here. Marines frequently take off to the bathroom and don't come back for some time. You know what that means, just as well as everyone else. The stress had just been getting to Swoff lately.
You can't drown your fears with alcohol here. You can't drown them with pleasure. You can't drown them with blood, because there is no blood here, not for us. Only sand, and heat, and the distant sounds of a fight you keep telling yourself you're making a difference in. There is no break from the monotony here.
But always the instigator, Fowler had the bright idea to send you, Swoff's best friend here, to 'check on him.' You protested at first, but eventually sighed and gave in to Fowler's crude demand. So you walk to the bathroom, drawing closer to where Anthony Swofford must be.
As you near the tiled room, you hear those same unmistakable sounds, the ones you've heard so many times here. The slap of skin on skin, punctuated by muffled grunts and groans in the voice of Swoff. You hate to admit it, but the noises send a jolt of electricity straight between your legs.
You take in a deep breath, bracing yourself. "Swoff? You in here?" you call out softly, your voice a guise of false innocence.
Immediately, the sounds come to a stop.
