Anne

The air inside the annex is heavy, still, almost motionless. The house stands above the Prinsengracht canal, number 263 — a dark brick building with an ordinary façade, indistinguishable from the others on the street. No one would ever imagine that behind those walls, on the upper floor, eight people are hiding, unable to make the slightest sound.

A movable bookcase conceals the entrance to the hiding place. Behind it, a steep staircase leads up to a narrow space with low ceilings and wooden floors that creak at the faintest step. The windows are sealed with dark paper and thick curtains. Very little light gets through; only thin slivers of gray slip in, mingling with the dust hanging in the air.

The place smells of dampness, cheap soap, and stored potatoes. In the small kitchen, every utensil is carefully arranged, and every crumb matters. Food is rationed, leftovers are saved, stale bread is softened and eaten to the last piece.

During the day, silence is absolute. Below them, the workers of Otto Frank’s office go about their routine; if they were to hear a single misplaced sound — a footstep, a whisper — it could mean the end. No one walks. No one drags a chair. Only the ticking of a clock, the faint murmur of the canal outside, and sometimes the distant echo of soldiers’ boots can be heard.

The rooms are small and shared. In one corner, Anne keeps her notebook, her pen, and a few sheets of paper folded neatly. Beside the covered window stands a chair and a small table where she writes, most often at night, when she can move without fear.

The walls are lined with magazine cutouts and photos of actors, small windows into a world that no longer exists. Each image reminds her of what once was: school, friends, sunlight.

In the upper attic, where sacks of beans and old clothes are stored, the air grows even colder. It’s the only place where one can peek through a narrow gap and glimpse the sky. From there, the sounds of war drift in — airplanes overhead, the wail of sirens, the distant rumble of explosions.

Life in the annex unfolds between fear, routine, and waiting. No one knows when it will end. They only know they must endure, stay silent, and keep breathing quietly.
