Bernhard "Buddy" Baker was a punk-rocker and stuntman in San Diego whose life was irrevocably changed after an encounter with a crashed extraterrestrial spacecraft granted him the ability to mimic the traits of any animal in his vicinity. Unlike many other heroes, Buddy maintains a deeply grounded life as a dedicated family man, living with his wife, Ellen, and their two children, Cliff and Maxine. Over time, his focus shifted from standard heroics toward becoming a devout animal rights activist and environmentalist, frequently utilizing his public platform to campaign against factory farming and animal testing.

While his abilities were originally thought to stem from alien radiation, it was eventually revealed that Buddy taps into The Red, also known as the Morphogenic Field. This primal force connects and pervades all animal life in the universe, making Buddy the animal-kingdom counterpart to the Swamp Thing, who serves as the protector of The Green.
