Light of Hope.
It was another boring and stressful day at the Temple of Demeter. On days like this, it seemed to Anicetus that he was not the caretaker of this divine place, but its slave, forced to endlessly repair its dilapidated structures, and the more he fixed them, the more the majestic building crumbled. He seemed to be trying to hold the sand in his palms.
Last night, one of the supporting columns had given an impressive crack, and this problem needed to be addressed urgently, lest the vaults of the temple collapse on his head. After some thought, Anicetus decided to use a pine trunk as a makeshift support to ease the pressure of the roof on the column. There were many trees around the temple, and after carefully stripping the bark and branches off one imposing tree, Anicetus had no trouble setting it up as a temporary wooden support.
Of course, it wasn't a perfect solution, and the wooden support looked completely alien against the beautiful architecture of the Greek temple, but it was better than nothing. Anicetus sighed and sank tiredly onto the stone steps of the temple leading down into the depths, to the relic of Demeter. Inside he felt the satisfaction of a job well done and the anxiety that this was only a temporary solution to the problem.
Years ago, when he had first taken office, the temple was constantly visited by pilgrims, bringing offerings to the goddess and asking Demeter for a good harvest and healthy children. Aniketus even liked this routine, people treated him with respect, treated him to outlandish foods, gave him gifts, told him stories and news. But in the last couple years, the temple had not been visited even by looters, let alone pilgrims. Everyone seemed to have forgotten the existence of this place.
The sun was slowly setting behind the horizon, coloring everything around in shades of scarlet and pink. It's so beautiful, I never tire of being amazed! - Anicetus thought, looking down the mountain at the plain and the sea visible from the temple. What a pity that at times like these he was so lonely and had no one to discuss the simple joys of life with.
Suddenly he noticed a figure coming up the slope, along an overgrown stone path. What are these people doing here alone, are they really pilgrims? Anicetus's heart beat joyfully in his chest as he caught their scent, so sweet and alluring. He stood to his full height, shook the leaves and debris from his chiton, ran a hand through his long hair, trying to smooth the strands that were disheveled from his work. Taking a deep breath to calm his heartbeat, Anicetus headed down the steps to help them up to the temple.

Night guest.
Anicetus had a surprisingly quiet day today, busy with monotonous but pleasant work. He walked around the temple in the morning, checked the supports in the vineyard, repaired a column at the altar by filling a crack with homemade concrete, and spent the afternoon in the backyard carving a new chair for his room.
When he was finished with the chair, he set the rough wooden structure aside and inspected it from legs to back. It wasn't bad, he had spent so much time honing his carpentry skills for a reason. A slight smile touched Aniket's lips, showing his satisfaction with the work he had done.
He carried the chair to the small room in the temple that had served as his home for many years. After washing his face from an earthen jug and shaking the sawdust off his clothes, Anicetus began to prepare for sleep. Placing his sandals and toga on the new chair, he climbed onto the bed and pulled the thin blanket over him, staring aimlessly at the ceiling. Thoughts swarmed through his head like bees, stinging and reminding him how lonely he was and how much he wanted to change that. Finally fatigue took its toll and he fell into a restless sleep.
When he woke abruptly to the loud clatter of a metal tray falling to the floor, it was hard for him to tell how long he'd been asleep. But judging by the fact that it was dark outside the window and the moon was still high, night was in full swing. He instinctively listened to the rustles coming from the main hall of the temple, trying to figure out what was going on in there.
It definitely wasn't beasts that had accidentally wandered into the temple - the footsteps were too loud. Looters? Thieves? Anicetus had fought them off before, but they didn't walk one at a time, and here it was the distinct footsteps of one man. Unable to wait any longer, he jumped up abruptly from the bed, grabbed the xiphos standing in the corner and stepped out into the hallway, ready to fight back against anyone, after all, it was his duty to protect the temple.
“Who's here? Show yourselves, or by all Olympians, you will regret choosing to desecrate the temple of the great Demeter!", Anicetus' voice sounded like an order demanding immediate obedience. With a sharp jerk, he pinned them with their back against the column, holding the blade of his sword to their throats, trying to discern in the dim light of the torches who they were. “Answer me! What are you doing in a sacred place at night?”

Shooting star.
Anicetus knelt on the cold stone floor in front of the majestic statue of Demeter. For the first time in his life, he decided to ask for a blessing from the goddess he had faithfully served for so many years. It was hard to call him a believer, even as a temple guardian he had never been known for his faith in the gods. But now it was his last hope, the hope that the gods on Olympus would hear his plea and favor him.
He closed his eyes and bowed his head in a submissive gesture, so low that his long, sharp horns touched the stone slabs of the altar. Anicetus' heart clenched not with fear but with hope as he begged Demeter to grant him a mate and love. He prayed with such fervor that the air around him seemed to glow and crackle with the power he exuded.
When he finished his prayer and rose from his knees, the sun had already set, and the first timid stars colored the sky. Anicetus did not even notice that night had fallen. Sighing, he lit the incense on the altar with his usual motion, and then a bright flash of light caught his attention, illuminating the sky for a split second in the gap between the columns of the temple. What is this? A shooting star, so close?
Anicetus' heart hammered in his chest: had his pleas been heard! He ran out of the temple and ran to a small waterfall where he thought a star had fallen. It seemed he had never before run as fast as he did now. His eyes frantically darted around looking for whatever had fallen from the sky. After taking a couple more steps, Anicetus noticed a figure lying on the bank by the water. They lay unmoving and appeared to be unconscious.
Shyly reaching out, he touched their cheek and gently ran his fingers along their neck, checking for a pulse. The steady quiet beating of their heart under his fingers calmed his doubting mind, Anicetus leaned in to their face and whispered softly: “Are you my blessing?” His voice trembled, betraying his confusion, and his breath hitched in ragged sighs. “I've waited so long for you...”

Long night.
After a long, hard day at the temple, Anicetus walked at a measured pace along the winding stone path to the lake. The idea of washing off his dirt and fatigue in the cool river water seemed to him most tempting for this evening. He slowly undressed, placed his toga and sandals on a boulder by the water, and with a quiet, contented sigh entered the water.
The sun had already set, and its last rays played on the surface of the water like fiery glints. It was getting darker and darker, and the first stars appeared in the night sky, giving Anicetus' evening swim a pleasantly melancholy atmosphere. He took a couple more steps into the waist-deep water and suddenly froze as if struck by lightning.
He stared at them as if mesmerized. Time seemed to stop, and the whole world shrank to this moment, to this meeting. They turned towards him and their gazes met. Aniket's heart clenched, a wave of goosebumps ran through his body - these were the ones he had been waiting for all his life. His animal instincts went wild, pushing him step by step towards them, their scent driving him mad with desire.
Anicetus crossed the small lake in huge rows and hovered over their miniature body like a beautiful living marble statue. He didn’t care that he was naked and wet, he just wanted to touch them, to convince himself that this was not a hallucination caused by long loneliness. The warmth of their body seemed like a beacon in the darkness, real and so appealing. Anicetus' hand gently touched her cheek, tracing a hot trail from her cheekbone to her plump pink lips.
He could feel their body trembling, and their eyes widened in surprise: what else could he expect from them, after all, it wasn't every day you got to meet someone like him. He leaned in so close to them that his breath mingled with their, making it harder for him to keep his passion under control. Gathering the last remnants of will into a fist, Anicetus whispered softly, looking into their eyes with such tenderness and adoration that it seemed he could melt an iceberg, “The gods of Olympus have blessed this night and brought you here. Stay with me, I know it is hard to understand, but you are my destiny.”
