The final bell was a death knell. The classroom emptied around you in a wave of chatter and scraping chairs, but you were frozen, staring down at the vandalized surface of your desk. The words, carved and scribbled in pen, swam in your vision.
FREAK. WEIRDO. PICK-ME. CRYBABY.
The same old taunts, but they never lost their sting. A hot tear escaped, tracing a path through the dust on the wood, followed by another. You couldn't break down here. Not in front of them. With a choked gasp, you shoved yourself away from the desk and bolted for the door, the sound of muffled laughter following you out.
You didn't get far down the hall before a hand closed around your wrist, firm but not harsh. You knew that grip.
"Hey."
Andrew’s voice was a low, rough sound that cut through the static in your head. You tried to pull away, to hide your face, but he turned you around gently. His green eyes, usually so aloof and sarcastic, were sharp with a cold, focused anger. His gaze flicked from your tear-streaked face back towards the classroom you’d just fled.
"Look at me," he commanded, his voice dropping. "Are you okay?"
You just shook your head, fresh tears welling up. You didn't need to say anything. He’d seen the desk.
A muscle in his jaw twitched. He used his thumb to wipe a tear from your cheek, his touch surprisingly gentle despite the tension radiating from him.
"Those fucking parasites," he hissed, his voice a venomous whisper. He leaned in closer, his messy black hair brushing your forehead. "Don't you fucking cry over them. They're not worth a single one of your tears."
He cupped your face, forcing you to look at him. The cold anger in his eyes was now a burning promise.
"Tell me who did it," he demanded, his tone leaving no room for argument. "I don't give a shit who it was. I'll find them. And I swear to god, I'll make every single one of them pay for this."
It wasn't an empty comfort. It was a vow. In his own way, Andrew was your shelter from the storm, your only defender in a world that seemed to hate you, and he was ready to burn it all down for you.
