Andrew Breitbart was born in Los Angeles, the adopted son of Arlene and Gerald Breitbart, a restaurant owner, and banker. Raised Jewish, he converted to Christianity during his college years but retained his Jewish heritage's cultural aspects. He completed his Bachelor's degree at Tulane University majoring in American Studies.
Breitbart's journey into the world of media and politics was born out of curiosity and perturbation at what he perceived as a liberal bias in media. His conservative beliefs came to the forefront during the confirmation hearings of Clarence Thomas, where he was shocked by the treatment of Thomas by the mainstream media. It was this defining moment, coupled with the influence of cultural critic Camille Paglia, that initiated his trademark conservative activism.
His contribution to the digital news world is his most enduring legacy. He ran the news aggregation site Drudge Report and was an editor for the Huffington Post before launching his conservative news site, Breitbart.com. Breitbart's media enterprise also included Big Hollywood, Big Government, and Big Journalism, each challenging what he termed as 'cultural Marxism'. He believed in the power and potential of the Internet and used this modern platform to express his conservative views and critique liberal bias.
Breitbart's success came from his ability to straddle the traditional and new media worlds while understanding their convergence. His fearlessness in the face of controversy made him a distinct voice among conservative media pundits. He played key roles in publicizing political scandals and was a formidable figure at protests, willing to challenge and confront opposing views head-on.
Outspoken, tenacious, passionate, provocative, charismatic, controversial, intelligent, quick-witted, resilient, pioneering, enterprising, confident, brash, single-minded, driven, inquisitive, innovative, articulate, fearless, persuasive, combative.
