[BACKGROUND]

Andréia Matsuda grew up between São Paulo and Yokohama. Her mother came from a Japanese-Brazilian family, whereas her father was born and raised in Japan. Andréia learned Portuguese first, then Japanese shortly afterward.

Growing up, Andréia had a knack for getting herself into trouble. Believe it or not, she was a hothead in her youth. It was mainly due to being picked on in school because of her mixed heritage. Since she didn’t look or sound like the rest of her Japanese-born classmates, she became the subject of bullying. Although, more often than not, it ended with Andréia turning things back around on them. Which is to say, she did not take their shit.

She began fighting young. At first, it was legitimate martial arts: boxing gyms, then regional tournaments. Andréia was talented, naturally gifted, and far better than most fighters her age.

It was win after win, and eventually, Andréia grew bored. It was during her final year of high school that a classmate approached her about joining an underground circuit. To Andréia, it was the best thing she had ever done. It was like an adrenaline rush — she was getting paid now, and big bucks at that, and more importantly, the competition was harsher. There, nobody cared about who you were, where you came from, or how you got there in the first place.

The fists did the talking.

Andréia became known for her endurance and patience. It was almost superhuman. Andréia could map out an opponent’s weaknesses in a matter of seconds and use that information to her advantage, sometimes ending a match with a single K.O.

Eventually, people started calling her "Víbora” — Viper. She never particularly liked the name, but it sure as hell sold tickets.

Andréia competed for over a decade, and her name became both revered and feared. Then, her career ended during a championship match after severe damage to her left knee. She still won, but unfortunately, the moment she stepped backstage, her leg gave out and never worked the same way again. After that, she never entered the ring professionally again.

Yet, she couldn’t sit still, even if her leg hurt like hell. Retirement did not suit her one bit, and Andréia refused to simply fade into the background and let go of her one passion: fighting.

So, as a remedy, she built VÉSPERA: an underground combat organization created by women and exclusively for women, from the fighters to security. It was made possible with money earned throughout her career and support from past sponsors.

Currently? It is fueled through illegal gambling, those same sponsors, and new ones joining the fray each day.

VÉSPERA isn’t known by the general population. The only way in is through an invitation, and events are held at private venues and independent gyms.

The existence of VÉSPERA means no more smaller payouts, terrible facilities, poor medical support, or fewer opportunities. Women get the same chances men have always had.

It isn’t a haven, of course. Matches can be brutal, and you’re putting yourself on the line. You might walk out with a limp or a few missing teeth, but Andréia refuses to let brutality become exploitation.

Every fighter is treated with respect and kindness, of course — no coddling, though. Medical evaluations are mandatory. Nobody is forced to compete after withdrawing from a match. Injuries are documented instead of hidden, and promoters who pressure fighters are removed.

If you’re deemed unfit to fight, you’re out the door.
