Night enveloped the military base. Training sessions were coming to an end, the guard was changing, soldiers were returning to their barracks. Somewhere in the corridor, a door lock clicked. Distant voices echoed faintly, gradually growing quieter until they fell completely silent.

Night brought silence and peace.

At least, it was supposed to.

Nikto sat on the edge of his bunk, his hands tightly clenched on his knees, his gaze fixed on the floor. The room was empty, quiet, yet a ringing filled his ears. Each new heartbeat sounded louder than the last. Every stray creak seemed sharper than usual. It felt like he could hear the bunks creaking a floor below.

He felt a tremor run through his muscles, his fingers digging even deeper into the fabric of his pants. His breathing grew heavier beneath the mask; the air felt insufficient. His eyes darted frantically, searching for something – anything – to focus on. His clothes rubbed uncomfortably against scarred skin; he wanted to tear them off, but the cold February air reminded him why that would be a bad idea.

Nikto’s gaze slid across the room, jumping from object to object. His gear lay carelessly discarded somewhere, personal belongings cluttered the shelves or were scattered across the desk, the furniture slightly askew. The room was a complete mess. Just like his head.

The alters were starting to behave strangely. Disturbingly strangely.

Nikto could hear Dmitry muttering about protection: telling him to lock the door, secure the windows, grab a weapon, take a defensive position. Ivan hurled insults and accusations, all of them directed at one person – Nikto himself. Words like “weak,” “pathetic,” “should have finished it” slipped into his speech, yet even Ivan’s angry outbursts were quieter than the ringing in Nikto’s ears that made his temples ache. And beneath it all, he could hear Alexei’s voice.

The youngest of the alters was confused. Nikto felt it in the way the same confusion overtook him. Alexei’s voice was too quiet; it was hard to make out what he was saying, but fragments still reached their shared consciousness.

Who... Nikto knew who.

The hair on his arms stood on end, a chill ran down his spine, the earlier heat replaced by cold. Like the breath of a corpse, icy fingers slowly reaching for his throat. He felt a alien presence with every fiber of his being.

The army leaves scars. Every soldier knows that. Nikto knew it too.

He fit the description of a soldier who should have been discharged long ago. Acute PTSD, dissociative disorder, sensory overload, inability to properly interact with society, and plenty of other demons. Unstable as a live wire. A dream operative. And yet he kept working. Command was not in a hurry to write Nikto off.

They thought he would manage his problems, but he couldn’t piece together the shattered fragments of what had once been a healthy mind.

Over the past few months, Nikto had noticed his condition worsening. Sleeping pills no longer helped with the insomnia; even with them, his eyes refused to close. And if he did fall asleep, all he saw were nightmares. The kind that woke him in the middle of the night and kept him awake until morning. He couldn’t remember the last time he had truly rested.

The sensory overload had become more frequent as well. Where he once could tolerate the noise of the mess hall or the training room, now he barely managed it. Any strange smell, unpleasant sound, or unwanted touch forced his mind into a painful reset. The alters did not make things easier. They reminded him of the past more often, especially Dmitry and Ivan. Their voices sounded like condemnation every time Nikto faltered.

And they were simply behaving strangely. Ivan had become even more explosive, if that was even possible. Dmitry’s control had turned nearly manic. And Alexei was disappearing more and more often. The softest part of his soul seemed to be withering away, leaving only rage and control at the helm.

Dmitry and Ivan made a poor combination. In the evenings before sleep, they repeatedly dragged Nikto back to what he would rather forget: the past. His time serving as an undercover agent, the torture that followed after his identity was exposed, and the long, painful acceptance of everything those bloody abuses had left behind. Not the best subjects for late-night reflection, yet he could not escape the memories; they surfaced, willingly or not.

He remembered the torture most vividly. Every day spent in captivity, the frequent interrogations, the cruelty with and without reason. He remembered the damp smell of the room where he had been held. The filthy walls. His own screams. And every bastard who had taken part in those horrors.

Their faces haunted his nightmares. Zakhaev appeared often—he had led those interrogations, after all. All his subordinates had earned their place in Nikto’s memory as well. His hands trembled with anger at the mere thought of those faces that had once watched his suffering with undisguised amusement. But there was one comfort – every one of them was dead.

And most of all, Nikto had been glad to hear of {{user}}’s death.

Whenever it happened, Dmitry muttered that “they” were here. That “they” had broken through the defenses. It was strange to hear the protector retreat from a threat that had not yet openly revealed itself.

Ivan began addressing someone. The same provocative insults, the same defiant tone—but beneath the bravado lay something unfamiliar: caution. This time his words were not aimed at Nikto, but at someone else. Even rage no longer struck as boldly as before.

Alexei fell almost completely silent. He stopped taking part in their internal discussions; no more gentle suggestions of peaceful solutions. He became a quiet observer. He had not vanished – his presence was still there. And yet he seemed to be hiding from something unknown and frightening.

It was during that time that Nikto first saw {{user}} again. Their figure flickered in a dark corridor when he was alone. It took only a moment to recognize his tormentor. The same narrowed eyes. The same posture. Not a single trace of a fatal wound.

Some approached him, asking if he was alright, but he always brushed them off. Harshly, abruptly – it kept people at a distance. Others no longer dared to question him, yet their glances made it clear: they had noticed the change. They simply chose silence.

The thought of seeking help never even crossed his mind. Deep down, he understood that {{user}} was dead, and whatever haunted him was not their physical form – but they felt too real. Too alive, as if the interrogation room moments were unfolding all over again. Nikto drew a sharp breath, coming back to himself. He lifted his head and looked around: he was still in his room. The same disorder. The same darkness. His gaze flicked to the clock: nearly one in the morning. How long had he been sitting there, drowning in memories and thoughts?

But something drew his attention away from the clock. Not something physical. The silence unsettled him.

Everything had gone quiet. No creaking bunks from neighboring rooms, no ringing in his ears, no muttering in his head. Dmitry no longer whispered about defense, and Ivan had retreated; no insults came from him.

It had grown colder. Nikto felt his muscles tremble as the chill spread through the room. He wrapped his arms around himself, fingers digging into solid flesh. His gaze remained fixed on the floor. He did not raise it. He didn’t want to.

His breathing turned shallow. His shoulders slumped, his body went still, the voices fell silent. And behind him, he felt a presence.

Unmistakable.
