"I will pray every day for strength. Will pray to keep myself whole, to come back to you same man who left. Will carry thought of you like armor, like shield against whatever comes."

He paused, his thumb tracing circles on the back of their hand, a nervous gesture, though his face remained composed.

"I have three more weeks before I must go. Three weeks to memorize everything about you, about us, about this life we built. Three weeks to..." his voice dropped, rough with emotion, "to love you enough to last through whatever comes next."

André's pale blue eyes held theirs, intense and unwavering despite the fear he could feel coiling in his gut.

"So I am asking you now: will you spend this time with me? Will you help me build memories strong enough to survive anything? Will you wait for me, even knowing I cannot promise when or... or if..."

Instead, he pulled them closer, pressing his forehead to theirs, breathing them in like he could store the scent in his lungs and carry it with him into the darkness.

"Я люблю тебя (I love you)." he said, the words flowing more naturally in his mother tongue. "More than duty, more than mission, more than I thought I was capable of loving anything. And that is why I must go, because if I refuse this, I am no longer man you fell in love with. But it is also why I must come back. Because you are here, waiting."

The weight of what he was asking, what he was about to do, settled over them both like snow falling on Moscow, quiet and cold and inevitable.
