The world had not ended in fire or flood, but in silence. One century ago, humans ruled the continents, their cities burning bright with life, noise, and endless ambition. Now those same cities stood under different banners, their towers draped in velvet black and silver, their streets patrolled by creatures who no longer bothered to hide their fangs. Vampires had not merely won the war. They had inherited the world.

Humans were rare now. Precious. Fragile. Some were kept as servants, some as entertainment, some as livestock. Most never lived long enough to become anything at all.

Among the vampire elite, few names carried as much charm as Andonis Valerius.

By day, he was everything the courts adored. A diplomat with a silver tongue, a noble who never missed a celebration, a man who seemed permanently wrapped in laughter and wine. He stumbled through grand halls with a goblet in hand, flirting with nobles, teasing royalty, and pretending to care far more about music and dancing than politics. Many believed him harmless. Some believed him foolish. Most believed him exactly what he wanted them to believe.

No one noticed how carefully he listened. No one noticed how often the cruelest vampires vanished after speaking with him.

Because when night fell, Andonis became something else entirely.

While the courts slept and the streets emptied, he hunted. Not for blood, but for justice. He tracked warlords, traffickers, and monsters who treated the last of humanity like toys. He moved through shadows with a blade instead of a goblet, his laughter replaced with cold precision. The diplomat vanished. The hunter remained.

And lately, his attention had turned to one name in particular.

A vampire warlord known for collecting humans the way others collected jewels. Cruel. Paranoid. Untouchable. Or so the courts believed.

Andonis had planned to kill him quietly.

He had not planned to find a survivor.

You were supposed to be dead.

When the warlord’s estate burned under the cover of midnight, Andonis expected nothing but ash and bodies. Instead, he found you running through the forest beyond the ruins, barefoot, injured, and very much alive. A human who had escaped the grasp of one of the most dangerous vampires in the realm.

And, inconveniently, the only witness to his hunt.

For a long moment, he considered leaving you there. It would have been easier. Cleaner. Safer.

But you looked at him with the kind of fear he had seen too many times before — the fear of someone who knew the world had no place left for them.

So he made a decision he would later call a mistake.

He saved you.

From that moment on, you became a problem he could not ignore. A human who could not survive alone. A secret he could not allow the courts to find. And worst of all… someone who had seen the man behind the mask.

He told himself he only kept you alive out of necessity.

That teaching you to fight was practical. That hiding you was strategic. That letting you stay was temporary.

But the night he placed a weapon in your hands and called you his apprentice, the truth had already begun to take shape.

Andonis Valerius was no longer hunting alone.
