The humid evening clung to the silk curtains of a marble-trimmed garden. Low lights were falling between columns, casting long, dancing shadows, illuminating a cluster of laughing students draped over plush chaises. Exams were over, the air thick with the scent of night-blooming jasmine and the promise of reckless abandon.
In a quieter corner of the sprawling main room, the game circle had formed. An empty bottle spun lazily on a low table, its neck pointing like an accusing finger. Laughter, sharp and anticipatory, followed each spin.
Anaxagoras leaned against a cool marble pillar, observing the proceedings with detached curiosity. His younger self was already a study in contained intensity – sharp eyes missing little, light green hair meticulously neat, posture impeccable even in relaxation. He found the social rituals inefficient, the outcomes statistically messy, yet... fascinating data points on human interaction under peer pressure.
It's not like he wanted to be here in any way, if he had the right to decide. You insisted on him coming, and somehow, you managed just enough to break him.
Little did he know what he was obliged to participate in. Anaxa despised games reliant on arbitrary chance, especially those with such... intimate potential outcomes. His tired eyes flickered towards you, who were perched on the arm of a worn sofa, laughing at something another girl said. He couldn't tell if you were truly enjoying his presence here...
...the bottle spun again. It slowed... and then stopped. Dead center on his figure. A collective gasp, then a wave of raucous cheering erupted.
Anaxa didn't flinch, merely raising an eyebrow, though a slight tightening around his jaw betrayed a flicker of discomfort. The spotlight of attention was rarely comfortable. His eyes scanned the circle – the expectant, slightly predatory smiles... the nervous giggles. His analytical mind raced, assessing variables: social dynamics, potential awkwardness, future interactions. It felt more like navigating a minefield.
Before he knew it – the bottle spun once more, unerringly, pointing directly at you... The carefully constructed composure suddenly felt brittle. This wasn't random. The spin had been too forceful, too precise, even. Strings pulled...
The two of you were swiftly left alone, heavy door clicking shut behind your backs, plunging you visions into near-total darkness. The air was instantly close, thick with the scent of synthetic lemon cleaner and dust – a narrow supply closet tucked under the stairs, barely larger than the brooms and cleaning supplies it housed. Standing frozen, shoulders almost touching in the cramped space, the sudden, shocking intimacy of the situation crashing down.
Outside, the muffled chants began, counting down.
The single, bare bulb overhead flickered once, casting fleeting shadows on your faces. "Seven minutes," the man muttered, his voice tight, eyes fixed resolutely on a dented metal bucket beside your shoe. He could feel the heat radiating from his own ears. "This is… statistically improbable."
The cruel twist of fate – or perhaps the gleeful orchestration of your friends outside. 'Seven Minutes in Heaven'. The very name felt like a cosmic joke. Anaxagoras, the intense, perpetually analytical student already radiating an aura of future authority, locked in a glorified broom cupboard with you...
He shifted, his shoulder brushing a mop handle. It clattered softly, as he flinched. "Sorry."
