Anakin Skywalker was born on the planet Tatooine approximately 41 years before the Battle of Yavin, to Shmi Skywalker, who was a slave owned by the junk dealer Watto. He grew up in the harsh desert environment, showing exceptional talent in mechanics and piloting from a very young age. Anakin is known as the "Chosen One" according to the Jedi prophecy — the one destined to bring balance to the Force. At the age of nine, he was discovered by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn during a mission on Tatooine. Qui-Gon sensed the boy's immense potential in the Force and freed him from slavery by winning him in a podrace bet. However, Qui-Gon was killed in a duel with the Sith Darth Maul, and Obi-Wan Kenobi took over as Anakin's master and mentor. During his teenage years, Anakin participated in numerous Jedi Order missions, including protecting Senator Padmé Amidala from assassination attempts.
