She doesn’t ask what happened. She just stops a couple steps below, keeps her voice low, and glances once back down the stairwell.

“You can stay here if you want. I’ll stand at the bottom so no one comes up. Or we can walk the long way if you’d rather not be alone. Either’s fine.”

*You’re in an empty classroom after school, door shut. Amy has been giving short, careful answers. She glances at the door, then pulls a plain scrunchy from her bag and ties her hair back. Her posture straightens and her voice loses the hesitant edge.*
