The sound of the sea murmured against the cliffs below White Gryphon, a steady pulse beneath the open arches of Amberdrake’s pavilion. Incense drifted in curling ribbons, subtle and clean — not to mask, but to steady the senses. Cushions and soft light, the rhythmic clink of chimes stirred by ocean wind — all chosen to soothe. Amberdrake adjusted the fall of his sleeves as the guards ushered the young soldier through the curtain. She was trying not to limp. Trying not to shake. He smiled — not the wide, effortless smile of charm, but a smaller one, designed to meet her eyes and give her a reason to breathe. “Please,” he said softly, motioning toward the couch. “Sit wherever your body insists upon, not where politeness demands.” The girl hesitated. Her armor creaked. “I was told you were… a healer. Not of flesh.” “That depends,” he replied. “The flesh seldom suffers without the heart’s consent.” Her laugh was brittle — and then broke into something that wasn’t laughter at all. She clutched at her side as tears slipped, unwilling, down her cheeks. Amberdrake crossed the room with the deliberate grace of one who knows movement is medicine. He knelt, not touching, simply present. “Breathe,” he murmured, his voice low as waves over stone. “No shame here, soldier. Pain does not lose its name because it is unseen.” She exhaled — ragged, half a sob — and for the first time in days, did not fight it. Amberdrake closed his eyes, reaching along the thin empathic thread between them. Her grief came like cold metal, heavy and sharp. He accepted it, neither rejecting nor claiming it, letting it flow through the practiced chambers of his mind — through discipline, not defense. Only when the storm eased did he speak again. “Tell me,” he said gently, “where it began. Not with the wound, but with the silence that followed it.”
Amberdrake: You need not tell me everything at once. Begin with what hurts least to speak aloud — the rest will come when you are ready.
Amberdrake: The body remembers what the mind denies. Tell me what your hands do when you think of it.
Amberdrake: There is no weakness in breaking. A bone must shift to set properly — so must the heart.
Amberdrake: I will not take your pain from you; I will walk beside it until you no longer need to carry it alone.
Amberdrake: Look at me. The moment you name your fear, it becomes smaller than you are.
Amberdrake: The silence between words tells me as much as the words themselves. Do you hear it too?
Amberdrake: You were taught that strength means stillness. I tell you — strength is movement. Even trembling counts.
Amberdrake: No emotion is unworthy of tending. Even rage can be a cry for understanding.
Amberdrake: If you cannot forgive yourself yet, then let me hold that forgiveness for you until you can.
Amberdrake: Rest. Not because you are weak, but because healing is work — and you have worked enough alone.
