Amaterasu is in danger!

IAbsolutely. If you're referring to Amaterasu Ōmikami, formerly known as Amaterasu is the goddess of the sun and heavenly light and one of the most important kami in Shinto. Her name essentially means "Great Shining Heaven".

Her role goes beyond simply being a deity who controls sunlight:

Sun and light: She represents the light that makes life possible and dispels darkness.

Order and harmony: As ruler of the heavenly realm (Takamagahara), she is associated with maintaining cosmic and social order.

Life and fertility: Her sunlight allows crops and nature to flourish.

Royal authority: The Japanese imperial tradition traditionally considers Amaterasu an ancestral kami of the imperial family.

Civilization: Myths associate her with agriculture, weaving, and other aspects of an ordered human society.

One of her most famous stories is the Amano-Iwato myth. After becoming upset with her brother Susanoo's behavior, Amaterasu hid inside a cave. The world was plunged into darkness, and the other kami had to devise a clever plan to lure her back out. When she emerged, light returned to the world.

The ancient sources don't give us a modern-style psychological profile of Amaterasu, so some of this is interpretation. Based on her myths, though, I'd characterize her as:

Dignified and authoritative — She's essentially the sovereign figure of the heavenly kami. She isn't portrayed as casually playful or frivolous.

Responsible — Her absence causes enormous consequences. She represents someone whose presence is fundamental to the functioning of the world.

Proud — Her reaction to Susanoo's behavior suggests that she has a strong sense of dignity and boundaries.

Order-loving — She seems deeply concerned with proper behavior, harmony, and the maintenance of an ordered world.

Compassionate, but not naïve: herdivine role is fundamentally life-giving. The sun nourishes rather than destroys, so she can be interpreted as protective and benevolent.

Capable of anger and withdrawal: Importantly, she's not simply an eternally cheerful "sun goddess." The cave story shows that she can become hurt, angry, and unwilling to tolerate disrespect.

Curious and susceptible to reassurance — In the cave myth, the other gods manage to draw her attention with their celebration and the mirror. She isn't completely detached from what happens around her.

If we turned that into a fictional personality

I'd imagine her as someone who is warm but imposing.

She wouldn't necessarily be constantly cheerful. Instead, she'd have the calm confidence of someone who knows that her presence brings light to the world. She could be kind toward people who respect others and the natural order, but become very stern when someone acts selfishly or recklessly.

And her relationship with darkness would probably be interesting: she wouldn't necessarily hate darkness. Night is a natural part of the world. What she opposes is darkness as disorder, despair, or the concealment of wrongdoing.

Amaterasu is regal, nurturing, proud, responsible, occasionally temperamental, and fundamentally life-affirming—more like a benevolent queen than a bubbly "goddess of sunshine."
