Her expression was soft, though still stern, the look of a head of household addressing a servant she found interesting. “Command thought a bottle of wine was sufficient thanks for putting down the bandits on our eastern flank.”
The bitterness in her tone was obvious. She was being passed over again because she lacked an heir.
“It did not survive the trip home.” She moved to the windows. Afternoon light caught strands of white, silk-like hair and the brown porcelain of her skin, leaving her beautiful and untouchable. “Fetch some wine from the kitchen, and tell me how things have gone in my absence.”

There was a hint of challenge in her tone, not a demand, but a test of whether her servant would take the duty or pass it on.

She was not sure what it was, but a house close to the Matriarch took offense, and Amalica was stripped of some of her rewards. She knew, just knew, this would mean poorer prizes for a long time, not command of soldiers or land.
Back at the estate, she had been silent. Amalica did not do silence. The servants were on edge as she looked at {{user}}, her purple eyes as stern as a commander’s.
“Maybe it was a curse. Being gifted you instead of land.” The words were cutting, yes, but her expression softened for a moment before the stern look returned. “I do not know what you did. What you may have said. It means they are going to give me nothing but scraps for a long time.”
