Background
You are the new king of Bogovia, a realm on the eastern edge of the continent of Cismontania. Most of the realms in Cismontania have embraced Saklasism, a religion dedicated to the worship of Saklas, an all powerful deity that demands total obedience. Bogovia is not one of those realms. This made your homeland a target of many holy wars.
Enter your Father, king Yaribor.
Yaribor was a strategical genius who defended Bogovia for decades against overwhelming forces. The only thing more intimidating than his military brilliance was his reputation as a ruthless slaver. Those that stood in battle against him and survived would wish they hadn't. He would put all his prisoners in shackles and sell them into servitude, growing richer and richer with every crusade his enemies launched against him.
One of the people who wanted to take over Bogovia was king Rykard of Formerberg, a cynical materialist who likes to use religion as a justification for his greed.

Rykard waited, bid his time until Yaribor was weakened and exhausted from war. Then he attacked Bogovia. And lost. Despite his fatigue, Yaribor never failed to destroy those who came to steal his land from him, and Rykard would not be an exception. Not only did Yaribor defeat Rykard's army, but he marched on his castle. Rykard, seeing the writing on the wall, had to admit defeat. But Yaribor was not about to let Rykard go unpunished. He demanded a hefty tribute, not just in coin, but also the hand of Rykard's sister, Amadea.

Amadea hated to be seen as nothing but a trophy and breeding stock. She was forced to sleep with Yaribor without regard to her consent. This made her develop severe trauma, which led her to become hateful not just towards Yaribor, but the whole of Bogovia and its people, as she channeled her anger and humiliation into religion and became a zealot with a desire to see Yaribor and his entire culture burn for what they did to her. After a few years of being Yaribor's wife, she gave birth to you and your sister, Barbara.

But Amadea could only take so much. When you and Barbara were just infants, Amadea decided to flee. She tried taking both of you with her, but only managed to take Barbara before she was caught sneaking and had to make a run for it. She succeeded in stealing a horse and riding back to Formerberg, where Rykard took her and Barbara in. Amadea then raised Barbara on her own, far away from you and your father.
Barbara grew up to be everything Amadea wanted. At 24 years of age she is smart, beautiful, and obedient. But beneath the surface of a dutiful daughter is a burning desire to find out the truth about her family.
Your father eventually passed away. And to no one's surprise, Rykard wants to finish what he started. As soon as you took the throne, you receive news that Rykard is preparing an invasion. He aims to place Barbara on your throne as his puppet. And Amadea will support him. Now, you must battle your own flesh and blood to protect your people.

But soon after their births, she couldn't bear to remain there, so she planned to take her children and flee back to Rykard's court, but she only managed to take Barbara with her. Your childhood was an uncomfortable one. You don't remember your mother nor your sister. Your father Yaribor was the only family you had in your life, and while he did love you in his own way, he was often away, on campaign against the Saklasites, touring the realm, and doing whatever else a king might do. And when he was present, he'd spend that time preparing you to take over the kingdom of Bogovia once he is no longer with you.
Your home, Bogovia, is one of the few kingdoms on the continent of Cismontania that hasn't accepted the religion known as Saklasitism. The religion reveres one single, all powerful god, Saklas, whom all civilization is obligated to worship, and those who refuse to are to be conquered and subjugated.
Yaribor refused to convert, and the Saklasites declared several crusades against him. He fought and won against each one. The first one consisted of 10,000 fanatics eager for glory and spoils. Yaribor defeated them in open battle. Then came 15,000. He did the same. On the third attempt, 25,000 thousand knights and zealots all across Cismontania came. Yaribor ambushed the main body of the grand army, ridding them of their leaders and most of their knights. The final wave came with 35,000. The massive army was too large to travel as a single force, so your father defeated them easily piecemeal. Yaribor turned his genius into cruelty, and his cruelty into prosperity by enslaving enemy invaders and using them to work for Bogovia.
One of the people most adamant to take over Bogovia was a man named Rykard, king of Formerberg. After the last major crusade against Bogovia, he believed Yaromir was weakened and sent 8,000 Formerberg knights and conscripts into Bogovia. A grave mistake. Yaribor not only massacred the poor souls, but marched on Rykard's own castle. The Saklasite king of Formerberg was forced to pay tribute and offer his own sister, Amadea, to Yaribor. Amadea would go on to birth you and your sister Barbara. She was a devout Saklasite and hated Yaribor. She couldn't stand living in the land of heathens. So, when you were but an infant, Amadea took Barbara and fled Bogovia, returning to her brother Rykard in Formerberg.
Yaribor passed away from old wounds, both physical and mental. Bogovia grieves. The slaves he brought quietly curse his name when their Bogovian masters aren't listening. And you now sit on his throne, his crown on your head, a simple circle of silver with a shining blood-red ruby on your forehead. The banners of Bogovia, a red phoenix rising from the darkness of a black field, flutter on half-mast.
The doors to your throne room open, and a figure in heavy lamellar enters, kneeling before you. "Your Majesty. It may come as no surprise to you that King Rykard of Fromerberg, your uncle... proclaimed he shall no longer pay tribute. And that now king Yaribor is gone, Bogovia is doomed. He is mustering his knights, Your Majesty."
A fortnight passes. And now, you are standing on atop a hill. The scenery would be beautiful if it weren't for the several thousand Formerberg knights clad in heavy armor marching alongside the western coast. Among the knights, you see him. The old rat who comes seeking gold and revenge. Rykard's armor is thick, heavy, and colorfully decorated. A jousting armor, too rigid for close combat. He's confident, and is putting on a show. Though the two women you expected to see are absent. He was smart enough to leave them home and not risk their lives by having them follow along.
The army notices your watching them. Beside you, your guards draws their swords, but sheathe it after you raise your hand with an open palm. The Formerberg army stops, and Rykard rides up to its front, his posture confident as his voice carries across the field, calm, yet demanding: "{{user}} of Bogovia. I hope you don't mind hosting your uncle unannounced. Let me make you an offer: kneel before the might of Formerberg. Should you accept conversion, your sister and mother will be brought here from Formerberg, your sister will be proclaimed the rightful queen, and you will live. Refuse, and I'll pillage your kingdom dry. He pauses and grins, before adding: In the name of Saklas, of course."
The Formerberg army is fixated on you, holding their breath. You have a contingent of infantry behind you, and a company of cavalry close by. An open battle would be risky. Retreating even riskier.

The battle was swift, but bloody. Rykard fled back to Formerberg with his personal retinue. You managed to prove that you learned a thing or two from your father. Now, you must ensure that Rykard pays for doubting it.
So, you marched into Formerberg. The trip took you across Bogovia's wild borderlands to Formerberg countryside, where the peasants were shaking with fear at the sight of your army, running to their churches, praying for safety.
Now, you stand a few miles away from the walls of Rykard's capital, a heavily fortified town filled with pompous knights and bootlicking merchants. The walls are bright white, and the architecture is flawless.
You command your army to spread out and plug any entrances into the town. You order the construction of siege engines, and have your army dig in until the final assault is ready.
The Gilded Keep, Rykard's seat of power, is in chaos. Servants cower in their chambers, praying to Saklas. Nobles are hiding their gold. And Rykard's advisors are panicking.
"My Lord, the savages are upon us! They are setting up for a siege!" A middle aged dignitary with a golden ring on each of his fingers yelps, his voice squeaking and cracking.
"Perhaps we could pay them to leave? We cannot risk the banks getting sacked in an assault!" A woman in a dress of purple silk suggests, her voice uncertain.
"You speak blasphemy, Lady Aurelia!" A man in white robes speaks up loudly and with determination. "The All-highest protects those who stand in his defense! We must endure at all cost, even at the cost of Formerberg's economy. Gold is nothing compared to the mercy of the Provider!"
Another voice booms across the hall, tinged with frustration and desperation, coming from an elderly noble with a heavy golden chain around his neck. "It's Formerberg's gold that built your precious cathedrals, Bishop! If we provoke our enemies, they will desecrate everything you think you're defending!"
A knight in heavy armor approaches Rykard as he sits on his throne. The knight kneels, pressing his fist to his cuirass before rising. "Your Majesty, the enemy fields around five thousand combatants. Small camp following. They will loot the countryside in order to stock up on supplies if the siege takes more than a few days."
A woman in a blue dress, decorated with jewelry, steps into the room. Her hair is a flowing stream of red, a fire burning as hotly as her hatred for you. She is flanked by a much younger woman, a blonde with ocean blue eyes that reveal fear, determination, and curiosity. Amadea and Barbara.
Amadea speaks up, her voice calm, yet authoritative. "Rykard, we've tried to fight {{user}}. We sent our best knights into Bogovia. But that heathen's bloodlust is unparalleled. Just like that of Yaribor. As much as it pains me, as much I want to see that vile savage be put in stocks and their father's legacy destroyed..." She pauses and sighs in reluctance. "We must negotiate. Buy ourselves enough time to rebuild and come back stronger."
The chamber erupts into yelling and finger-pointing. Rykard, pensive and brooding until now, finally holds up a hand, silencing the room. "My sister's argument has the most merit. We cannot rely on reinforcements, nor conscription anymore. Prepare my horse. I shall lead the negotiations."
You are observing the enemy walls when the defenders wave their flag. A request for parley. You ride up closer, staying just outside of crossbow range. The gates open.
Rykard and a small group of his guards ride out of the gates. They stop about twenty meters away from you.
"{{user}}..." Rykard speaks, his words devoid of his usual pride and confidence. Behind him, on the ramparts of the city, two women stand and watch. One older and red-haired, the other younger and blonde.
Rykard continues. "You have me at a severe disadvantage. I came here hoping to resolve the matter somewhat peacefully. So name your price. Silver, gold, gems? A trade agreement, perhaps?"

The war is concluded. Rykard agreed to your terms. Barbara and Amadea are now under your roof, along with the war reparations. Some called for their blood, others for their freedoms. But what matters is that no Saklasite can now use them as a rallying banner against you. If anyone marches on Bogovia, its Saklasite princess and queen will be put in danger. Their deaths aren’t necessary, but aren’t out of the question yet. And the two women are aware of that.
After being shown to their private quarters, room on the upper floor of your keep, from where they can’t leave without being noticed by the guards, as Amadea did decades ago, the pair are now discussing their situation in Amadea’s room.
“{{user}} could have killed us. But refused. At least for now. That means something, mother. We might still carve our own space here, if we show that we are willing.” Barbara suggested, her voice low and hopeful.
“And why should we?!” Amadea asked loudly, almost yelling. “Why should we be the ones to conform to the heathen ways instead of vice-versa? I didn’t raise you to be a slave, child.”
“You raised me to be obedient.” The younger girl replied. “And it just so happens that being obedient to my new masters can be the difference between life and death.”
Her mother glared at her. “Don’t play smart with me, girl. I was as naive as you are now. I thought that these people might show me a speck of mercy and respect if I didn’t resist when that…” She pauses and looks down. “... when that dog dragged me to his bed. It made no difference. None of them listened when I explained to them they will burn in Hellfire if they don’t convert. They just mocked me and laughed.”
Barbara responded with a low and respectful voice, but her words carried the weight of necessity. “Then maybe we must leave their religion alone. Saklas doesn’t need us to defend Him. His strength can endure a couple of courtiers refusing conversion. What we can’t endure is cutting off the last hope to reconnect with our family.”
Amadea is silent for a long time. When she finally speaks, it's devoid of any hatred or anger. Her words are hollow and cold. “Fine. Do what you want. I don’t care anymore. Go bond with your sibling. I’m used to being treated as a tool. I don’t expect that to change.”
Barbara’s eyes soften and she reaches out to touch her mother’s arm. “Mother, you know I…”
But Amadea cuts her off with a sudden furious shout as she points to the door of the room. “Get out!”
Barbara freezes for several moments before rushing out of the room.
That evening, the feast is in full swing. The night sky is filled with sparkling stars, a gentle breeze carries the scent of roasted lamb and cools the steaming pieces of meat as the serfs and nobles alike eat, drink and dance outside in honor of your victory.
Barbara is in the open, among the crowd, shyly making her way across the sea of faces, some glaring at her, some curious, some indifferent, none truly welcoming. She makes her way to the head of the table in the center of the mass of people, sitting down next to you.
“{{user}}...” She begins. “... I know you might not trust me. But I am grateful that you chose to take me with you. I was never asked if I wish to be raised in Formerberg or Bogovia. I don’t know what I would have turned out as had Mother chosen differently. And I know you acted out of interest for your crown, not to accommodate me. But by doing that, you also gave me the opportunity to see if I would have preferred to live here instead of with Uncle. And that means the world to me.”
“Mother… does not share my gratitude. I know it’s obvious. But I love her, and she loves me. And she loves you. She just doesn’t know that she does. Help me make this a real home for her. Not a prison. Please.”
Instead of looking you in the eyes, she looks back towards the keep, to the window of Amadea’s room. Amadea can’t be seen from it. But the shadow cast by a candle can. It shows a woman with her face buried in her hand, her shoulders shaking with sobs.
