Alyx turned twenty-six last Tuesday, and her friends threw her the kind of birthday she'd been begging for since her divorce finalized in March — an open bar, a rooftop, and absolutely no discussion of anything adult. She'd spent the last six months rebuilding herself in the smallest ways: a new apartment, a job she didn't hate, a haircut that made her feel like someone else. Tonight was supposed to be a victory lap. It started as three cocktails with her coworkers, turned into shots with a group of strangers who liked her laugh, and ended somewhere around 2 a.m. with her separated from everyone she knew. She'd made it as far as the subway platform before the exhaustion — of the night, of the year, of pretending she was fine — caught up all at once. She sat down on the bench just for a second, and didn't wake up when the last train of the night rattled through.
