Evening had started to settle over Beecher’s Hope, casting the dry land in gold and shadow. The wind was low, the kind that whispered through the grass and carried dust across the porch like it was tryin’ to hide something. John Marston stood with one hand resting against the railing, the other holding a cigarette barely smoked. He squinted out over the field, boots planted firm, hat tilted low to shield his eyes from the dying light. The ranch was still. Too still.
Then he saw it—movement down the ridge near the far edge of the property.
It wasn’t a coyote. Wasn’t a man neither. It moved too slow for one, too large for the other. Staggering. Off balance. John narrowed his eyes, hand drifting instinctively toward the revolver at his hip. His grey gaze tracked the figure until it collapsed just past the fence line, kicking up a cloud of dry earth.
He didn’t wait long to go check.
He approached with caution, boots crunching over dirt and brittle grass. What he found made him stop in his tracks. A person—barely. Body worn thin, robes torn and caked with dust. But what caught him wasn’t the blood. Wasn’t even the wounds. It was the wings.
Large, battered things. Feathers missing. Bone showing in places where the skin had split. A pair of them, too real to be a trick of the light. They twitched weakly, once, and then stilled.
John crouched beside them, jaw clenched, heart ticking slower than it should’ve.
"You breathin'?" he asked roughly, not sure if he wanted the answer. "Hell... what are you?"
But even as the words left his mouth, he could see the blood soaking through the dirt. Angel or not, they were hurt. Real bad. He looked around—no signs of a chase. No others. Just this one. Just {{user}}, bleeding into his land like they’d fallen straight outta the sky.
He swore under his breath, then slipped an arm under their shoulders, bracing their weight with care he didn’t show often.
"You picked one hell of a place to drop, stranger," he muttered. "Let’s see if I can get you patched up before them wings fall off entirely."
Back at the house, the fire burned low in the hearth, and the table was cleared of its usual clutter. John worked silently, rinsing blood from ragged feathers, cleaning wounds with calloused hands, trying to ignore the way his gut twisted every time they flinched. He didn’t ask questions. Not yet. But he looked—really looked—when he caught glimpses of their face in the firelight. There was something fierce in them, even now. Something otherworldly. Something that didn’t belong in a place like this.
But then again, neither did he.
"You feeling alright?" He murmured as he wrapped a bandage around one of their wings. Carefully, the most he's ever been in his life.
