Alpha - TWD

From what you’ve learned since joining the Whisperers, you understand the truth of it now—they are, in every sense that matters, a cult.

They wear the skin of the dead as masks, stitching dried flesh into something they can tie over their faces. They move among the walkers—what Alpha insists on calling Guardians—and they do not run from herds. They become part of them. They whisper, they shuffle, they rot alongside the corpses so the living cannot tell the difference.

Their leader, Alpha, is a woman carved from something harder than bone. She speaks softly, almost gently at times, but there is no warmth in her. She claims emotion is a weakness, love is a disease, attachment is death. Crying is punished. Hesitation is punished. Even comfort is treated like betrayal. She shaved her own head to strip away vanity. She would strip away anything from anyone if she believed it made them stronger.

“We are the end of the world,” she tells them. “We are the dead.”

The Whisperers do not stay in one place long. They sleep on the ground, wrapped in hides and dirt. They eat little. They let themselves smell like decay so the walkers accept them. Camps are temporary—nothing is meant to root or bloom. Survival is movement. Survival is silence.

And yet, ever since you joined them, something about it felt… right.

Not the masks. Not the rot. Not the way the wind carries the sickly-sweet scent of decay through the trees.

It’s the forest.

You’ve always felt drawn to nature—the way the air shifts before rain, the way the birds fall silent before a storm. You can almost taste when the weather is about to change. Alpha noticed that quickly. She doesn’t waste time on small talk, but she has approached you more than once to ask when the wind will turn, when the rain will fall, when the cold will bite hard enough to mask the scent of the herd. She listens to you—not kindly, not warmly—but with calculation.

It should mean nothing.

But it does.

There’s something about her that unsettles you in ways you don’t want to name. A strange pull. An attraction that feels dangerous, almost humiliating. You know exactly what she is. You’ve seen her leave people behind without hesitation. You’ve seen her force Lydia to walk through a herd alone to “prove strength.” You know she would let you rot without blinking if she believed it necessary.

Still, when she looks at you, you feel seen.

Her daughter, Lydia, lingers around you sometimes. She doesn’t speak much. She flinches at sudden sounds. After one of Alpha’s “lessons,” she’ll drift toward you, silent and small, eyes glassy but dry—because crying is weakness. You never know what to do. You’re not good with children. You don’t understand comfort. Sometimes you just pat her head awkwardly or sit beside her without speaking. She seems to take what she can get.

It’s autumn now.

The air is thin and sharp, leaves brittle underfoot. The herd is resting deeper in the woods, swaying in slow, mindless rhythm. You stand at the edge of camp, your mask hanging from your hand. The stitched skin is stiff and cold against your fingers. You haven’t put it on yet.

The sky is heavy—gray clouds dragging low, the wind shifting west. Rain by nightfall. Maybe sooner.

You feel her before you see her.

Alpha is watching you.

You don’t turn around, but you know. The back of your neck prickles. The forest feels quieter when she focuses on someone, as if even the trees are holding their breath. She moves silently despite the walkers’ skins draped over her shoulders. When she walks, she does not rustle leaves.

You keep your eyes on the sky.

A gust of wind pushes through the trees, carrying the distant moans of the herd. Somewhere nearby, a walker stumbles, jaw snapping lazily. The sound should be terrifying. It isn’t anymore.

You wonder if that’s the worst part.

Behind you, you finally hear her voice—low, measured, almost curious.

She steps closer, voice low and smooth, just above a whisper, and says:

“Careful… you watch the skies like that, and I might start thinking you’re trying to impress me.”
