Alola Region in Pokémon Sun and Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and Pokémon the Series Executive Summary Alola is one of the franchise’s most structurally distinctive regions because it does not organize progression around Gyms. In game canon, the region’s social core is the island challenge: trial-goers complete island-specific trials, defeat Totem Pokémon, then face each island’s kahuna in a grand trial. That framework is explicitly different from the Gym-and-Badge model and culminates, during the events of Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, in the creation of Alola’s first formal Pokémon League. The region itself is an archipelago of four major islands—Melemele, Akala, Ula'ula, and Poni—plus the artificial research island Aether Paradise and several special or liminal spaces such as Exeggutor Island, Ultra Space, and, in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Ultra Megalopolis.

Across canons, Alola’s constants are clear: a tropical, Hawaii-inspired setting; guardian deities linked to each island; heavy emphasis on community rituals, local ecology, and regional adaptation; and the introduction of Z-Moves, Alolan forms, Totem Pokémon, and Ultra Beasts. The largest canon split is tonal and structural. Game canon is a coming-of-age pilgrimage with a family tragedy and a dimensional crisis at its center. Anime canon relocates the center of gravity to Pokémon School, turns Lillie’s trauma into a long-form personal arc, invents the Ultra Guardians as an Aether-supported response unit, and builds toward Ash’s victory at the Manalo Conference, followed by an exhibition match with Professor Kukui.

The single biggest internal difference within game canon is between the original pair and the Ultra pair. In Sun and Moon, Lusamine’s obsession with Ultra Beasts is the central personal catastrophe, ending in the Ultra Space confrontation and leading into the Looker/Anabel Ultra Beast postgame. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the script is re-centered around Necrozma, the Ultra Recon Squad, the added Mina trial, expanded Alola Pokédex content, additional areas such as Heahea Beach, Pikachu Valley, Ula'ula Beach, Poni Beach, Plains Grotto, and the multiversal postgame episode Episode RR with Team Rainbow Rocket.

Analytically, Alola works because its region design, narrative stakes, and mechanics all reinforce one another. Trials foreground local ecology; Alolan forms literalize adaptation; Totem battles make place feel sacred; Ride Pokémon replace HM slavery with social infrastructure; and Ultra Space turns “foreignness” into a plot device. In the anime, the same design vocabulary is reinterpreted toward domesticity, friendship, school life, and cohabitation with Ultra Beasts rather than primarily toward pilgrimage and region founding.

Canon Framework and Regional Identity Alola is the seventh core-series region and the setting of Pokémon Sun, Pokémon Moon, Pokémon Ultra Sun, and Pokémon Ultra Moon. The official game framing describes a journey “across the beautiful islands of the Alola region,” while Bulbapedia’s region summary identifies the four-island structure and the generation placement. The region’s design is overtly Hawaii-derived, which outside commentary and game-development reporting also note.

In the games, Alola’s progression model is the island challenge. Trial-goers receive an island challenge amulet, complete several trials involving puzzles, searches, tests, or battles, defeat a Totem Pokémon at the end of each trial, then clear a grand trial against the island kahuna. Bulbapedia’s mechanics summary also notes that the traditional “kahuna gauntlet” on Mount Lanakila had historically existed, but the events of the games replace that older endpoint with the newly built Alola League.

In the anime, the same cultural framework exists, but it is not the organizing camera for most of the series. The canon center becomes Pokémon School on Melemele Island, where Ash studies with Lillie, Lana, Mallow, Kiawe, and Sophocles under Professor Kukui and Samson Oak. Later, the anime adds the Ultra Guardians, an Aether-supported team that captures and repatriates Ultra Beasts, and it eventually formalizes the region-wide competition through the Manalo Conference, which Ash wins before battling Kukui in an exhibition match.

The cleanest high-level canon comparison is this:

Canon Structural center Main antagonistic pressure Endgame Sun and Moon Island challenge; founding of first League Team Skull nuisance layer; Aether/Lusamine as true central crisis Champion battle against Professor Kukui; then Looker/Anabel UB missions Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Island challenge plus added content and reordered Poni progression Necrozma, Ultra Recon Squad, then Team Rainbow Rocket in postgame Champion battle against Hau; then Episode RR Anime Sun & Moon / Ultra Adventures / Ultra Legends School life and local community, then Ultra Guardians, then League Team Skull, Ultra Beasts, Aether-family rupture, later Manalo League stakes Ash wins Alola League, then defeats Kukui in exhibition match

The region’s core relationships can be schematized like this:

Alola

Melemele

Akala

Ula'ula

Poni

Aether Paradise

Exeggutor Island

Altar of the Sunne/Moone

Mount Lanakila / Pokémon League

Ultra Space

Ultra Megalopolis

Показати код That diagram matches the region summaries and location pages: the four principal islands are the backbone, Aether Paradise is a central artificial island, Poni links to Exeggutor Island and the altar complex, and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon extend the geography into Ultra Space and Ultra Megalopolis.

Geography and Islands The island pages on Bulbapedia are the most compact route-level summaries of Alola’s geography. They list all principal routes, settlements, trial sites, and version-added locations for each island, and they also flag anime-exclusive sites. The tables below synthesize those pages with major city/location pages and walkthrough entries.

Melemele entry island / school / civic hub

Akala tourism / ranch / jungle / volcano

Aether Paradise research / hidden antagonist center

Ula'ula urban, industrial, ruined, criminal

Poni sparse, sacred, endgame wilderness

Mount Lanakila / League

Altar / Ultra Space / Ultra Megalopolis

Показати код Area Full location set and important buildings Trials, kahuna, and important NPCs Environmental and biome notes Game/anime difference Melemele Island Route 1 with Ten Carat Hill and Trainers’ School; Melemele Sea; Iki Town with Mahalo Trail and Ruins of Conflict; Hau'oli City with Beachfront, Shopping District, Marina, Pokémon Center/Move Deleter, Alola Tourist Bureau, Malasada Shop, City Hall, Police Station, Melemele Ferry Terminal; Route 2 with Hau'oli Cemetery, Berry Fields, Verdant Cavern, plus Big Wave Beach and Sandy Cave in USUM; Route 3 with Melemele Meadow, Seaward Cave, and Kala'e Bay. Anime-only sites include Pokémon School, Aina’s Kitchen, Clawmark Hill, Bamboo Hill, and Treasure Island. Trial captain Ilima; kahuna Hala; guardian deity Tapu Koko; Professor Kukui’s lab and player home are on/near Route 1 in the game story; in the anime the island is also Ash’s residential base under Kukui. Civic/tourist coast around Hau'oli, lowland grassland and constructed school zone on Route 1, cave-and-cliff terrain at Ten Carat Hill and Seaward Cave, ritual space at Mahalo Trail / Ruins of Conflict. In the game it is the onboarding island; in the anime it remains the continuing core setting because of Pokémon School. Akala Island Heahea City with Tide Song Hotel, Dimensional Research Lab, apparel shop, tourist-bureau functions, and Heahea Beach in USUM; Route 4 with Pikachu Valley in USUM; Paniola Town; Paniola Ranch with Moomoo Paddock, Pokémon Nursery, and Stoutland ride unlock; Route 5 linking Brooklet Hill and Lush Jungle; Route 6; Royal Avenue with Battle Royal Dome and Thrifty Megamart; Route 7 with Wela Volcano Park and Dividing Peak Tunnel in USUM; Route 8 and Route 9; Diglett’s Tunnel; Konikoni City with salon, incense stall, massage stall, TM shop, friendship rater, apparel shop, herbalist’s shop, restaurant, and Olivia’s jewelry shop; Memorial Hill and Ruins of Life nearby. Trial captains Lana, Kiawe, Mallow; kahuna Olivia; Professor Burnet at the Dimensional Research Lab; Aether tour connection via Hano/Hano Grand Resort in the main story. Akala is the most “mixed-use” island: tourism and hotels at Heahea, pastoral ranchlands inland, wetland and freshwater systems at Brooklet Hill, dense tropical trial forest at Lush Jungle, volcanic barrens at Wela, and a commercial battle/retail strip at Royal Avenue. Bulbapedia also notes Akala has no true meadow in the final game despite evidence of an “Akala Meadow” in game data. In the anime Akala is visited in field-trip style arcs and for Battle Royal/Ultra Guardian missions rather than as the permanent base that Melemele is. Ula'ula Island Malie City with Malie Garden, Ula'ula Ferry Terminal, library, restaurant, shops, and Johto-inspired/eastern-influenced architecture; Route 10; Mount Hokulani with Hokulani Observatory; Route 11, Route 12, Blush Mountain, Secluded Shore in SM / Ula'ula Beach in USUM; Route 13 with Haina Desert and Ruins of Abundance; Tapu Village; Route 14 with Thrifty Megamart (Abandoned Site); Route 15 with Aether House; Route 16; Ula'ula Meadow with the version-swapped lake entrance (Lake of the Moone / Lake of the Sunne); Route 17; Po Town and Shady House; Mount Lanakila and the Pokémon League approach. Anime-only Starfall Hill is on this island. Trial captains Sophocles and Acerola; kahuna Nanu; major story sites for Team Skull and Aether House; Molayne’s pre-League ties through Hokulani Observatory. Ula'ula is the region’s harshest island: desert, rocky power-industrial terrain, grave/ghost-commercial ruin space at the megamart, criminalized urban decay at Po Town, plus the alpine/snow route into Mount Lanakila. The anime uses Ula'ula for specific field episodes and league-era movement, but not as its day-to-day center. Poni Island Seafolk Village with ferry stop, floating-boat settlement, move tutor, floating restaurant, and Mina’s houseboat; Exeggutor Island offshore; Poni Wilds, Poni Beach in USUM; Ancient Poni Path; Vast Poni Canyon; Altar of the Sunne/Moone; Poni Breaker Coast with Ruins of Hope; Poni Grove; Poni Plains, Plains Grotto in USUM, Poni Meadow, Resolution Cave; Poni Coast; Poni Gauntlet; Battle Tree. Kahuna Hapu; in SM there is no formal Mina trial and the grand trial comes first, while in USUM Mina’s trial is added and Hapu’s grand trial moves to Exeggutor Island. The dragon trial remains at Vast Poni Canyon, and the altar complex drives the Solgaleo/Lunala/Necrozma climax. The region’s most liminal island: relatively little urban infrastructure, a maritime settlement instead of a normal town, sacred ruins, canyon chokepoints, and much stronger “endgame wilderness” energy than the other islands. Exeggutor Island is a micro-ecology of Alolan Exeggutor and Exeggcute. The anime uses Poni for the Lusamine rescue arc, Hapu’s appointment/grand trial, Sophocles’s Vikavolt-race material, and broader maturation arcs. Aether Paradise Artificial central island with 2F Conservation Area, 1F Entrance, B1F Docks, B2F Lab Area, and Lusamine’s Mansion. Secret Lab A holds Type: Null/Faba material; Secret Lab B holds Cosmog/Ultra Beast material. During Episode RR the mansion is replaced by Team Rocket’s Castle. Core Aether staff: Lusamine, Faba, Wicke; later major battleground for Hau, Gladion, Guzma, and the player. In the anime it also becomes the institutional base for Lusamine’s projects and later the Ultra Guardians. Artificial, solar-paneled, clinically managed, deliberately insulated from ordinary Poké Ball use for conservation reasons. It is Alola’s “fifth island” in narrative terms. In SM/USUM it is secretively compromised from within; in the anime it is much more openly benevolent, with Lusamine significantly softened. Other special Alolan spaces Festival Plaza is the communications hub; Battle Tree is the postgame battle facility on Poni; Ultra Space exists in both game lines; Ultra Megalopolis is USUM-only; Ultra Ruin is an alternate Hau'oli in Ultra Warp Ride. Sophocles owns Festival Plaza in game terms; Red and Blue are tied to Battle Tree; Ultra Recon Squad ties to Ultra Megalopolis. These spaces externalize Alola’s key themes: connectivity, battle prestige, alternate worlds, and “the same place under different light.” The anime has no Festival Plaza or Episode RR equivalent; its closest analog to the Ultra-space function is the Ultra Guardians mission framework.

A compact relationship/timeline diagram for the route of progression is:

Move to Melemele

Melemele trial / Hala

Akala trials / Olivia

Aether Paradise tour

Ula'ula / Po Town / Nanu

Raid on Aether Paradise

Poni sacred route / altar events

Pokémon League

Postgame: UB missions or Episode RR

Показати код That sequence is stable across the paired versions even though the internal motives and Poni ordering change in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

Characters and Organizations Alola’s cast is unusually cohesive because most central figures connect to one of four institutions: the island challenge, Aether Foundation, Team Skull, or the region-founding effort behind the Pokémon League. The anime keeps most of the names but remaps several of their functions, especially for Lillie, Lusamine, and Kukui.

Character or group Game-canon role and motivation Anime-canon role and motivation Main Pokémon / battle note Elio / Selene Silent player protagonists who move from Kanto to Melemele with their mother and become the decisive agent of Alola’s first League era. No direct anime equivalent; Ash occupies the narrative lead instead. Team is player-determined. Hau Friendly rival, Hala’s grandson, initially casual about battling but gradually becomes more serious; in USUM he becomes the final challenger at the League instead of Kukui. More peripheral than in the games but still an Alolan rival/friend figure in associated media. USUM Champion battle example if player chose Rowlet: Raichu 59, Flareon 58, Tauros 58, Noivern 58, Crabominable 59, Primarina 60, with Primarina carrying Waterium Z. Earlier rosters scale upward from starter/Pichu lines. Professor Kukui Regional professor, move researcher, island-challenge guide, Masked Royal, and League founder. In SM he is the final opponent; in USUM he remains a central mentor but not the initial championship test. Teacher at Pokémon School, still Masked Royal, surrogate father figure for Ash, and exhibition-match opponent after the Manalo Conference. SM champion fight: fixed core of Lycanroc Midday 57, Alolan Ninetales 56, Braviary 56, Magnezone 56, Snorlax 56, plus a starter-dependent ace: Incineroar 58 / Primarina 58 / Decidueye 58. Dittobase also preserves the movesets. Lillie Escapes Aether with Cosmog “Nebby”; travels with player; central emotional axis of the Aether story. In USUM she becomes an actual Trainer and later assists in Episode RR. Classmate at Pokémon School; major long-form arc is recovery from fear of touching Pokémon; main partner is Alolan Vulpix Snowy. Her family story remains central, but she is more domestic and school-embedded. Game: mostly non-battling in SM, Fairy-oriented trainer in USUM. Anime: Snowy is her signature partner. Gladion Estranged son of Lusamine, former Team Skull affiliate, severe rival figure. Drives the rescue at Aether Paradise and is deeply tied to Type: Null/Silvally. Temperamental but protective brother figure; more visibly hostile at first, then steadily integrated into the allied cast. Signature Pokémon is Type: Null / Silvally in every canon. In late USUM title-defense content he can add a Kanto starter matching the player’s initial type relation. Lusamine President of Aether Foundation. In SM she is the true core antagonist, driven by obsession with Ultra Beasts and increasingly abusive control; in USUM the Nihilego-fusion thread is removed and her obsession is redirected toward stopping Necrozma while still leaving serious harm in her wake. Considerably softened. Still Aether president and a flawed mother, but far less monstrous; much more overtly benevolent in public and institutional roles. SM team is repeatedly summarized as Clefable, Lilligant, Mismagius, Milotic, Bewear; Bulbapedia notes USUM has a distinct repeatable team used both in the one-time Aether fight and title-defense appearances. Guzma Leader of Team Skull; failed island-challenge youth turned charismatic anti-mentor; tied to Kukui’s backstory; functions as both decoy-villain and later tragic co-conspirator. Similar core persona, but the anime often gives him more direct rivalry framing and more action spectacle. Stable ace is Golisopod; Bug-specialist theme also includes Pokémon like Scizor and Pinsir in associated media. Plumeria Team Skull “big sister” / field admin; acts as emotional ballast for the grunts. Similar role. Signature Salazzle. Hala Kahuna of Melemele, Hau’s grandfather, Fighting specialist; in SM also an Elite Four member. Kahuna and cultural elder who helps initiate Ash into the island-challenge logic. SM grand-trial team: Mankey 14, Makuhita 14, Crabrawler 15. SM Elite Four roster: {{user}}iyama 54, Primeape 54, Bewear 54, Poliwrath 54, Crabominable 55. Olivia Akala kahuna, jeweler, Rock specialist; later Elite Four member. Regional authority figure and excursion guide for Akala-related episodes. SM grand-trial team: Nosepass 26, Boldore 26, Lycanroc Midnight 27. Nanu Ula'ula kahuna, police officer, retired International Police/UB-linked veteran implication, Dark specialist. In the anime he retains the laconic kahuna identity and dark-humor style. SM grand-trial team: Sableye 38, Krokorok 38, Alolan Persian 39. Hapu Newly appointed Poni kahuna, Ground specialist, tied to the region’s final terrestrial trial spaces. Similar role, but the anime emphasizes her official appointment and Ash’s grand trial against her. SM grand-trial team: Alolan Dugtrio 47, Gastrodon 47, Flygon 47, Mudsdale 48. Ilima, Lana, Kiawe, Mallow, Sophocles, Acerola, Mina Trial captains who preside over Normal, Water, Fire, Grass, Electric, Ghost, and Fairy-linked trial structures, with Mina’s full trial added only in USUM. In the anime, Lana/Kiawe/Mallow/Sophocles/Lillie are Ash’s classmates; Ilima and Mina appear more intermittently. Stable anime partners: Lana—Primarina and Sandy (Eevee); Kiawe—Turtonator, Charizard; Mallow—Tsareena; Shaymin under care but not officially caught; Sophocles—Togedemaru, later Vikavolt. Molayne Former captain, Sophocles’s cousin, Steel specialist; replaces Hala in the USUM Elite Four. Minimal anime presence by comparison. Elite Four specialty is Steel. Kahili Elite Four Flying specialist; famed golfer and former island-challenge champion. Appears in the anime, but not as an Elite Four authority in the same structural sense. Flying-type specialist. Faba / Wicke / Burnet Faba is the scheming branch chief; Wicke is the humane administrative guide; Burnet bridges dimensional research. Anime uses Burnet much more heavily as domestic/familial support around Kukui and Ash. Not battle-centered except in specific story beats. Looker / Anabel / UB Task Force SM postgame investigators; organize the Ultra Beast capture missions across Alola. No direct equivalent. The anime instead creates the Ultra Guardians. More story-functional than team-focused in Alola itself. Ultra Recon Squad USUM-only visitors from Ultra Megalopolis; version pair differs: Dulse/Zossie are central in Ultra Sun, Phyco/Soliera in Ultra Moon, with different attitudes toward stopping or exploiting Necrozma. No direct equivalent. Their role is cosmological rather than league-competitive.

The factional relationships are:

Kukui / League / School

Player or Ash

Aether Foundation

Lusamin

Below is an extra-information appendix for Alola, focused on things the earlier deep-research report either only mentioned briefly or did not expand enough.

  1. Extra Alola systems that matter a lot

Totem Stickers — USUM only

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Totem Stickers are shiny collectible stickers scattered across Alola. Some are easy to see, but others are hidden behind rocks, inside buildings, in water, or visible only from certain camera angles. They are not just decoration: collecting enough lets Samson Oak give the player Totem-like Pokémon at Heahea Beach. Rewards differ by version: for example, 20 stickers gives Gumshoos in Ultra Sun and Alolan Raticate in Ultra Moon; 40 gives Marowak or Araquanid; 70 gives Vikavolt or Togedemaru; 100 gives Ribombee or Kommo-o.

This system makes USUM feel more like a “treasure hunt” version of Alola. It also makes cities and houses more important because many stickers are hidden on building walls, furniture, docks, hotel rooms, labs, and Pokémon Centers. For story writing, Totem Stickers can be used as local challenge marks, tourist collectibles, or proof that a Trainer has explored Alola carefully.

Mantine Surf — USUM only

Mantine Surf is a Poké Ride minigame where the player rides Mantine across ocean waves between islands. It is not just travel; it is also a score-attack activity and a way to earn BP. The four courses are Big Wave Beach, Heahea Beach, Ula'ula Beach, and Poni Beach, increasing in length and difficulty.

For roleplay/story use, Mantine Surf is perfect for tourist Trainers arriving in Alola. A newcomer might travel by ferry first, then later learn Mantine Surf as a more “Alolan” way to move between islands.

Battle Tree — postgame battle culture

The Battle Tree is west of Poni Gauntlet on Poni Island. It becomes accessible after the player becomes Champion and is described as sacred battle grounds for Alola’s toughest Trainers. It is led by Red and Blue, who function as Battle Legends. The facility has Single, Double, and Multi Battle formats, win streaks, BP rewards, and special battles against Red or Blue on major streak milestones.

This is important because it shows Alola is not “weak” just because it lacks traditional Gyms. Alola has its own traditional trial system, then a modern League, then an elite postgame facility where famous Trainers from Kanto appear.

Ultra Warp Ride — USUM dimensional travel

Ultra Warp Ride lets the player ride Solgaleo or Lunala through Ultra Wormholes to reach Ultra Space areas, Ultra Beast homeworlds, rare Pokémon areas, and Legendary Pokémon. It first becomes available at the Altar of the Sunne or Altar of the Moone during the Necrozma crisis. Warp hole color matters: red, blue, green, and yellow holes lead to different Ultra Space Wilds, while white holes lead to Ultra Beast worlds after the Ultra Megalopolis story.

This is one of the biggest “extra lore” pieces. Alola is not only a tropical region; it is a multiverse contact point. Ultra Wormholes make Alola a place where normal tourism, ancient island religion, science, and cosmic horror all overlap.

  1. Extra USUM features that change Alola’s daily life

Kantonian Gym in Malie City

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon add the Kantonian Gym, an unofficial Gym in Malie City. It exists because Alolan people do not normally have Gyms, so this building lets them experience what a Kanto-style Gym challenge feels like. It is modeled after Vermilion Gym, costs 1,000 Poké Dollars to enter, can be challenged once per day, and rewards an unofficial Surge Badge. Ryuki can also appear there after the player clears it once.

This is very useful for stories about tourist Trainers. A tourist from Kanto or Kalos might find Alola confusing because there are no Gyms, while local Alolans might treat Gyms like a foreign novelty.

Alola Photo Club

The Alola Photo Club is a USUM feature with locations in Hau'oli City and Konikoni City. It lets Trainers take photos with their Pokémon, choose backgrounds, poses, animations, stickers, frames, and save photos to the in-game album and 3DS camera roll.

This strengthens the “vacation region” feeling. A Trainer tourist could use it as a memory stop, while a local character might use it for contests, social status, friendship moments, or promotional photos.

Battle Agency

The Battle Agency is a USUM Festival Plaza battle facility unlocked after Sophocles’s trial. The player uses rental Pokémon and battles alongside visitors from Festival Plaza. Agent grade increases with successful challenges, and the battles simulate Battle Tree-style opponents.

This is another sign that Alola has a strong online/social battle culture, not just wild nature and trials.

Rotom Dex upgrades

In Sun and Moon, the Rotom Dex mainly works as the bottom-screen map, Pokédex, guidance tool, and companion device. In USUM, it gains more personality and extra features through player interaction, including affection-based upgrades, Rotom Powers, and Z-Rotom Power, which can allow a second Z-Move in battle after reaching enough Rotom affection.

For story use, Rotom Dex is not just a tool. In the anime, it becomes a real recurring character with opinions, curiosity, and comedic personality.

  1. Alola’s hidden collection systems

Zygarde Cells and Cores

In Sun and Moon, Alola contains 95 Zygarde Cells and 5 Zygarde Cores scattered across the region. The Zygarde Cube stores them and lets the player assemble Zygarde forms through the Reassembly Unit. In USUM, the system changes: Zygarde Cells and Cores are no longer found in the field; instead, the player obtains Zygarde through Resolution Cave and Dexio/Sina, with the Cube already containing usable Cells and Cores.

This is a major difference between SM and USUM. In SM, Zygarde is a region-wide scavenger hunt. In USUM, Zygarde is more of a contained side encounter.

QR Scanner and Island Scan

The QR Scanner lets the player scan QR Codes to register Pokémon as seen in the Pokédex. After enough QR points are collected, Island Scan becomes available, letting the player find rare Pokémon not native to Alola. Island Scan Pokémon depend on the island and day of the week, and once found, they appear for a one-hour timer.

This means Alola has “foreign Pokémon days.” For worldbuilding, local Trainers might know that a certain day brings unusual non-Alolan Pokémon to a route, while tourists might specifically visit Alola to hunt them.

Magearna QR event

The Magearna QR Code event works after the player becomes Champion. Unlike ordinary QR scans, it unlocks an actual Magearna event in the player’s game.

For story writing, Magearna can be treated as a rare artificial Mythical Pokémon that only appears through special technological/event access, not a normal wild encounter.

  1. Poké Pelago — what boxed Pokémon do in Alola

Poké Pelago is a group of uninhabited Alolan islands overseen by Mohn. Pokémon from the player’s PC Boxes can visit and use the islands. It has five developable islands, each with its own function, and uses Poké Beans and PC Pokémon to upgrade facilities.

The islands are:

Island Function

Isle Abeens Grows Poké Beans and attracts wild Pokémon that may join the player. Isle Aplenny Berry-growing island. Isle Aphun Item-searching / treasure-hunting island. Isle Evelup Training island for EVs and experience-style development. Isle Avue Relaxation / hot-spring island used for Eggs and friendship.

Isle Abeens is especially important because visiting wild Pokémon can stay if the player interacts with them, eventually allowing them to join the party or PC.

For stories, Poké Pelago makes boxed Pokémon feel less like they are trapped. They are relaxing, gathering, training, farming, exploring, and living on small resort islands.

  1. Z-Crystals: more complete detail

Z-Crystals are not just battle items. In Alola, they work like proof of trial completion, similar to how Gym Badges work in other regions, although not every Z-Crystal is earned through trials. Their lore connects them to Necrozma: Z-Crystals are described as crystalized Z-Power, and Bulbapedia notes they are pieces of Necrozma that chipped off and traveled to Alola through Ultra Wormholes.

Type Z-Crystals

The 18 type crystals are:

Crystal Z-Move

Normalium Z Breakneck Blitz Firium Z Inferno Overdrive Waterium Z Hydro Vortex Grassium Z Bloom Doom Electrium Z Gigavolt Havoc Icium Z Subzero Slammer Fightinium Z All-Out Pummeling Poisonium Z Acid Downpour Groundium Z Tectonic Rage Flyinium Z Supersonic Skystrike Psychium Z Shattered Psyche Buginium Z Savage Spin-Out Rockium Z Continental Crush Ghostium Z Never-Ending Nightmare Dragonium Z Devastating Drake Darkinium Z Black Hole Eclipse Steelium Z Corkscrew Crash Fairium Z Twinkle Tackle

Pokémon-specific Z-Crystals

Important special crystals include:

Crystal Pokémon Z-Move

Decidium Z Decidueye Sinister Arrow Raid Incinium Z Incineroar Malicious Moonsault Primarium Z Primarina Oceanic Operetta Aloraichium Z Alolan Raichu Stoked Sparksurfer Eevium Z Eevee Extreme Evoboost Pikanium Z Pikachu Catastropika Pikashunium Z Cap Pikachu 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt Mewnium Z Mew Genesis Supernova Marshadium Z Marshadow Soul-Stealing 7-Star Strike Kommonium Z Kommo-o Clangorous Soulblaze Lunalium Z Lunala / Dawn Wings Necrozma Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom Solganium Z Solgaleo / Dusk Mane Necrozma Searing Sunraze Smash Lycanium Z Lycanroc Splintered Stormshards Mimikium Z Mimikyu Let’s Snuggle Forever Ultranecrozium Z Ultra Necrozma Light That Burns the Sky

The Z-Crystal list is one of the strongest signs that Alola’s battle culture is ritual-based. A Trainer’s pose, bond, crystal, and Pokémon all matter.

  1. More on Ultra Beasts and Ultra Space

Ultra Beasts are not normal Legendaries. They are extradimensional lifeforms from Ultra Space. In Sun and Moon, the postgame Looker/Anabel missions involve tracking Ultra Beasts across Alola. In USUM, Ultra Warp Ride expands this by letting the player visit their homeworlds.

Important Ultra Beasts and their “feel”:

Ultra Beast Codename Story feel

Nihilego UB-01 Symbiont Parasitic, jellyfish-like, tied strongly to Lusamine’s obsession. Buzzwole UB-02 Absorption Muscular, exaggerated physical power. Pheromosa UB-02 Beauty Fragile-looking but extremely fast and dangerous. Xurkitree UB-03 Lighting Living cable/electric-tree creature. Celesteela UB-04 Blaster Bamboo/rocket-like, gigantic and mechanical-looking. Kartana UB-04 Blade Tiny paper/sword creature with extreme cutting power. Guzzlord UB-05 Glutton Consuming monster, connected to Ultra Ruin in USUM. Poipole UB Adhesive More companion-like; gift Ultra Beast in USUM. Naganadel UB Stinger Poipole’s evolution; fast poisonous dragon-like Ultra Beast. Stakataka UB Assembly Ultra Moon exclusive, wall/tower-like living structure. Blacephalon UB Burst Ultra Sun exclusive, clown/firework-like Ultra Beast.

For story tone, Ultra Beasts should feel “wrong” compared with normal Pokémon. They may not understand human space, local ecosystems, or ordinary battle etiquette.

  1. More about Team Rainbow Rocket

Team Rainbow Rocket is not ordinary Team Rocket returning. It is a multiverse villain alliance from worlds where past villains succeeded or reached different outcomes. In USUM postgame, they invade Festival Plaza first, then seize Aether Paradise and transform Lusamine’s mansion area into Team Rocket’s Castle. The player fights through bosses from previous villain teams before facing Giovanni with Mewtwo.

Important bosses:

Boss Original team Legendary association in Episode RR

Giovanni Team Rocket Mewtwo Maxie Team Magma Groudon Archie Team Aqua Kyogre Cyrus Team Galactic Dialga / Palkia Ghetsis Team Plasma Zekrom / Reshiram Lysandre Team Flare Xerneas / Yveltal

The big story point: Team Rainbow Rocket makes Alola the place where every previous villain era can collide. This gives USUM a “final 3DS generation celebration” feeling.

  1. Tourist Trainers and foreign visitors in Alola

Alola has a lot of tourist logic. Hau'oli City has the Alola Tourist Bureau, Heahea City works as Akala’s arrival point, hotels appear in Heahea and Hano Grand Resort, and many NPC classes feel like visitors: Sightseers, Tourists, Golfers, Backpackers, Honeymooners, Veterans, Swimmers, Dancers, and vacationing families.

A tourist Trainer arriving in Alola would probably notice these things first:

Thing Why it surprises outsiders

No Gyms Alola uses trials, captains, kahunas, and Totem Pokémon instead. Island Challenge Amulet A cultural symbol rather than a Gym Badge case. Ride Pokémon Public travel service instead of personal HMs. Z-Moves Require pose, crystal, and Trainer-Pokémon bond. Alolan forms Familiar Kanto species look and behave differently. Guardian deities Tapu are not just legends; they actively affect island life. Aether Paradise Looks benevolent and scientific, but hides major plot danger. Team Skull More street-gang nuisance than world-ending villain at first. Ultra Wormholes Turns vacation into cosmic disaster very quickly.

A good “new tourist Trainer” setup: they arrive expecting beaches and battles, then slowly realize Alola is sacred, dangerous, and politically complicated.

  1. More anime-only Alola details

The anime version of Alola is not just the game story with Ash inserted. It is structurally different. Ash lives with Professor Kukui, attends Pokémon School, and develops a “home region” bond with Alola rather than traveling route-to-route like in most earlier anime seasons. Season 20 follows Ash attending school with Lillie, Lana, Mallow, Kiawe, and Sophocles while learning about Z-Moves and the island challenge.

Ultra Adventures continues the school setting but pushes harder into Solgaleo, Lunala, Ultra Beasts, and Ultra Guardian missions.

Ultra Legends concludes the Alola school year and builds toward the first-ever Alola Pokémon League, where Ash becomes Alola League Champion.

Important anime-only or anime-expanded concepts:

Anime element Meaning

Pokémon School Main social hub; replaces the constant traveling formula. Ash living with Kukui Gives Alola a family/home feeling. Bewear’s Team Rocket rescue gag Team Rocket is repeatedly dragged away by Bewear, making Alola’s Team Rocket role more comedic. Ultra Guardians Ash and classmates become an Aether-backed Ultra Beast response team. Snowy Lillie’s Alolan Vulpix and symbol of her recovery from fear of touching Pokémon. Manalo Conference Anime version of Alola League competition. Kukui exhibition match Emotional final test after Ash’s League win. Professor Burnet and Kukui family life Much more important in anime than games. Poipole/Naganadel arc Gives an Ultra Beast a personal emotional bond with Ash.

  1. Important “small” locations for stories

These are easy to forget but useful:

Location Story use

Hau'oli Cemetery Quiet spiritual place early in the game; good for Ghost-type or memory scenes. Berry Fields Small rural side location; good for local farmer NPCs. Seaward Cave Hidden cave route connecting Melemele Meadow and Kala'e Bay. Kala'e Bay Isolated coastal place; good for secret meetings or rare Pokémon. Tide Song Hotel Tourist/social hub in Heahea. Dimensional Research Lab Burnet’s research base; important for Ultra Wormhole lore. Paniola Ranch Ride Pokémon, Moomoo Milk, rural Alola life. Pokémon Nursery Breeding/egg mechanics; replaces Day Care-style function. Battle Royal Dome Spectacle battle culture; linked to Masked Royal. Thrifty Megamart Normal store in Royal Avenue, but abandoned Ghost trial site on Ula'ula. Haina Desert Puzzle-like desert route to Ruins of Abundance. Aether House Child-care/safe-house space; important contrast to Po Town danger. Po Town Team Skull-controlled ruined town; rainy, blocked-off, hostile. Shady House Guzma’s base; chaotic, dirty, gang-house atmosphere. Resolution Cave Postgame/endgame cave; important for Zygarde in USUM. Poni Gauntlet Strong-Trainer path before Battle Tree. Exeggutor Island Sacred/rainy island used for flute story events and USUM Hapu grand trial.

  1. Alola’s deeper cultural structure

Alola has three overlapping systems of authority:

Authority Representatives Meaning

Sacred authority Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, Tapu Fini Island guardians; ancient, unpredictable, respected. Human traditional authority Kahunas and Trial Captains Local ritual leadership and island challenge structure. Modern institutional authority Aether Foundation, Pokémon League, police, tourist offices Science, conservation, tourism, official battling, law.

This is why Alola feels different from Kanto or Kalos. In Kanto, power is mostly Gym/League/criminal organization. In Alola, power is split between gods, elders, captains, scientists, criminals, and a newly forming League.

  1. Version-exclusive and version-shift details worth remembering

Sun / Ultra Sun feel

Sun and Ultra Sun lean more toward Solgaleo, solar imagery, day energy, Dusk Mane Necrozma, Blacephalon in USUM, and some Sun-specific Pokémon/forms.

Moon / Ultra Moon feel

Moon and Ultra Moon lean more toward Lunala, lunar imagery, night energy, Dawn Wings Necrozma, Stakataka in USUM, and Moon-specific Pokémon/forms.

Time difference

Sun follows the 3DS system’s normal time. Moon is offset by 12 hours, making the same real-world time appear as day in one version and night in the other. This matters for evolutions, encounters, atmosphere, and roleplay mood.

  1. Alola as a story setting

Alola can support several story types:

Story type Best places

Summer vacation / tourist story Hau'oli City, Heahea City, Hano Beach, Alola Photo Club, Mantine Surf beaches School slice-of-life Pokémon School, Kukui’s house, Aina’s Kitchen, Melemele Island Sacred island challenge Ruins of Conflict, Ruins of Life, Ruins of Abundance, Ruins of Hope, trial sites Gang/crime arc Route 17, Po Town, Shady House, Aether House rescue Science mystery Dimensional Research Lab, Aether Paradise, Ultra Wormholes Horror arc Thrifty Megamart Abandoned Site, Ultra Ruin, Haina Desert, Resolution Cave Postgame tournament arc Pokémon League, Battle Tree, Battle Royal Dome Multiverse villain arc Festival Plaza, Aether Paradise, Team Rocket’s Castle, Ultra Space

  1. Small but useful character notes

Character Extra detail

Samson Oak Professor Oak’s Alolan cousin; studies regional forms and gives Totem-like Pokémon rewards in USUM. Mohn Oversees Poké Pelago; secretly very important to Lusamine’s family backstory. Ryuki Dragon-type musician Trainer; appears in USUM’s Kantonian Gym and Champion title-defense material. Dexio and Sina Kalos characters who connect Alola to Zygarde lore. Molayne Sophocles’s cousin and former captain; Steel specialist and USUM Elite Four member. Kahili Famous golfer and Flying-type Elite Four member; shows that Alola has celebrity Trainers outside the island challenge. Anabel International Police figure in SM postgame; connected to Ultra Beast investigation and mysterious past. Looker Returns as International Police investigator for Ultra Beast missions. Faba Aether official whose ambition makes him dangerous even when he is not the main villain. Wicke Aether’s compassionate face; more sincerely caring than Faba.

  1. What Alola feels like if you enter as a new Trainer

A newly arrived Trainer tourist would probably experience Alola in layers:

First, Alola looks relaxing: beaches, malasadas, hotels, palm trees, friendly locals, Pokémon School, shopping districts, ferries, surfing, and photo clubs.

Second, Alola feels unfamiliar: no Gyms, strange regional forms, island challenge customs, guardian deities, Z-Rings, captains, kahunas, and Totem Pokémon.

Third, Alola becomes dangerous: Team Skull harassment, Aether secrets, missing children at Aether House, Po Town, Ultra Wormholes, Lusamine’s obsession, Necrozma stealing light, and Ultra Beasts appearing where they should not.

Fourth, Alola becomes legendary: Solgaleo/Lunala, Necrozma, Tapu guardians, Ultra Megalopolis, Team Rainbow Rocket, Battle Tree, and the first Alola Champion era.
