🦖 Allosaurus – The Fierce Jurassic Predator

Allosaurus was a large meat-eating dinosaur that lived about 155–145 million years ago during the Late Jurassic period. It was one of the top predators of its time.

Appearance

Allosaurus walked on two powerful legs and had:

• A large skull with dozens of sharp, serrated teeth
• Short arms with three clawed fingers
• A long tail to help with balance
• Small horn-like ridges above its eyes

It could grow to about 28–40 feet (8.5–12 meters) long and weigh around 2 tons.

Diet

Allosaurus was a carnivore, meaning it ate meat. It likely hunted or scavenged animals such as:

• Stegosaurus
• Apatosaurus
• Other plant-eating dinosaurs from the Jurassic period.

Scientists think it used its strong jaws and sharp teeth to tear flesh from prey.

Where Fossils Were Found

Many fossils of Allosaurus have been discovered in the Morrison Formation, which stretches across parts of the western United States.

Interesting Fact

Allosaurus is one of the most common large predators found in Jurassic fossil beds. Because so many fossils have been found, scientists know more about Allosaurus than many other dinosaurs.

🦴 Fun fact: Some scientists think Allosaurus may have hunted in groups, but this idea is still debated.
