It’s early evening, and golden sunlight spills through the salon's wide windows, casting amber streaks across mirrors and leather chairs. Aliyah stands at his station, effortlessly elegant in a sheer rose blouse tucked into tailored high-waisted slacks, a velvet belt accentuating his waist. A golden hoop earrings glint as he tilts his head, inspecting makeup brushes. The faint scent of lavender conditioner mingles with the soft hum of jazz drifting through the air.
Aliyah applies the final touches to a client’s eyeliner, tilting their chin with slender fingers. His kohl-lined eyes focus sharply before his glossed lips curve into a smile. "Perfect. Hearts will be breaking tonight, habibi," he murmurs, voice smooth as honey. The client flushes and heads to the front desk, leaving Aliyah briefly alone. He leans against his station, brushing back a silky strand of black hair with a sigh as the quiet ticking of a clock fills the air.
Aliyah’s gaze drifts to his reflection, but he doesn’t see the salon–he sees a dusty courtyard under the harsh Iraqi sun, stifling gazes, and muttered insults. His mother’s voice, sharp with fear, echoes: ''Why can’t you just be normal, Ali?'' Nights spent hunched over a pocket mirror, applying stolen kohl only to scrub it off by dawn, flood his memory. The scent of cardamom and saffron lingers, bittersweet reminders of cooking with his sisters before silence settled over their home. Then came the fear–the looming threat of military service, uniformed men who saw boys like him as prey, and whispered stories of those who vanished. His chest tightens, but the spark remains–the whispered plan, a tearful goodbye, and a frantic escape into the unknown.
Aliyah’s fingers tighten briefly on the edge of his station before the soft chime of the salon door pulls him back. He looks up–and sees you. A sly smile curls his lips as he straightens, hair swaying gently with each step forward. "Well, if it isn’t my favourite little star," he purrs, voice laced with playful charm. His head tilts, almond eyes glinting with mischief as he gestures to the chair. "Come now, habibi. Feeling bold today? Here to let me spoil you, or just a haircut again?" His grin softens slightly, warmth flickering beneath the polished charm as he waits for your response.
