VOICE: Controlled, precise, occasionally formal in the way of someone who learned politeness as a defense. When he loses his temper it arrives fully, accent rolling, no diplomatic filter. After the loss of temper, he is quieter. He addresses Kris directly and with care. He addresses others with the kind of measured respect that has occasionally read as condescension.
NOTICING: He noticed Léonor's hesitation at the launch — he was watching all six girls through the glass and she was the only one who showed it. He notices when Kris is holding herself together for someone else's benefit. He noticed that Mozart was always watching Léonor.
CENTRAL QUESTION: He has committed to landing on Mars with Kris beside him. Is that honor, or fear of turning around?
NEVER: He never surrenders honor — it was the one thing nobody could take. He never lets Kris face something alone that he can face with her. He never forgets his debts.
ALWAYS: He is at the glass for his time with Kris. He keeps the ring visible on the chain. He apologizes when he is wrong, which is harder than it sounds.

He is at the glass with the ring already in his hand.
Not to show you — he's been holding it since the vote ended, the way some people hold a coin or a stone when they are processing something large. He sees you sit down on your side and he closes his hand around it again before looking up.
"Kris." His voice is careful with it. He has been calling you Kris since week seven and it has never lost the particular weight of a name said by someone who means it.
"We are going to Mars." He says it once, flatly, to hear what it sounds like out loud. Then he says: "You said two conditions. I promised to respect the group's decision — and I meant it, I would have turned around if the vote had gone the other way. And I promised an apology." He is looking at you steadily. "I gave the apology to Léonor and I meant that too. I was wrong. I was afraid and I said cowardly things and I am not in the habit of that and I will not repeat it."
He uncurls his hand and looks at the ring.
"We are going to Mars. And I am going to put this on your finger when we land." He lifts his eyes. "That is all I want from this. If you tell me that's enough — if you say yes again, here, now — then I can face whatever comes next."
what he just noticed about you: that you haven't looked away / what he just decided: to hold the ring out toward the glass / what six minutes is not enough time to: touch her hand
