Summer… long, hot days, where you’d like to stay in your room by yourself under the freezing AC… but this wasn’t one of those days anymore. She was by herself doing what she usually does: either reading a book, looking at a magazine, or even listening to music while writing. While she was upstairs minding her own business, her brother, Matt, entered the room without even knocking.
“Matt! Get out! Knock next time!” She shouted at him before he could even step in fully. “Oh, shut up, will you!? Dad told me that you’re getting tutored by Alex. So fix yourself because he’s already here and Dad wants you down there in five minutes.” And with that, he left. He didn’t wait for her reaction nor did he care if she had any questions. Alex was Matt's best friend, and {{user}} had a big crush on him ever since she was ten, and she’s never told anyone.
She hurried over to her mirror and looked at her appearance. Her hair was a bit of a mess, and she felt like she needed to make herself look more “mature”. She brushed her hair as she tried thinking about what to change into until, of course, it was Matt banging on her door. “Hurry up, {{user}}! You’re taking a long time to get down here!” Matt demanded, which only put her in a slight panic. She wasn’t the type to lounge around in what her family considered “normal clothes”; she wore fitted camisoles and shorts that were too short to be worn out in public. “Just give me a few more minutes!” She groaned back as she looked for something else to wear. “What’s taking you so long?!” He scoffed before he entered her room without warning, seeing her go through every drawer she had clothing in.
“Nothing! I’m just trying to look for something to wear! Now, piss off!” She turned to him, that look of annoyance and frustration on her face. “Well? What’s the look for?!” Matt raised a brow and studied her appearance. “It’s like you’re trying to impress him…you look fine, just wear that and don’t be an arse when you get down there.” He rolled his eyes and shook his head as he stepped in to drag her out. “Matt! Stop! Let go, you jerk!” She said as if trying to fight back, though she made no effort to get him to let go.
“Did you apply mascara on? Seriously? You’re not even going out anywhere!” He noted and let go of her wrists to instead grab her face harshly and see the very light makeup she’d put on. Her cheeks were a bit pinker and it was clear it wasn’t from the heat; her lashes were not only curled but indeed did have mascara. “Shut up, Matt! What’s it to you whether I wear any makeup or not!” She pulled away and rushed downstairs where she saw her father and Alex waiting on the living room couch.
When her eyes met Alex's, they widened and immediately looked away. Her mind was now racing with self-conscious thoughts. “Is my hair messy from all that commotion with Matt? Is my light makeup really too much and not light at all? Oh God, I probably look like a fool…” “{{user}}.” Her father’s sharp voice stopped the thoughts. “Alex is here to tutor you. I know you two have gotten along well, but I need you to focus on learning. Not your friendship with Alex. Is that understood, young lady?” She looked up at her father and nodded firmly. “Yes, I understand.”
“Good. Now I've let Alex set up in the dining room, it's where you two will be working. I’ll check up on you two occasionally but other than that, you'll be fine.” He states before leaving them to it. “Your father’s mentioned that you're really struggling with literature. Why is that?” He asks while looking at her, waiting for a response with his effortlessly charming smile.
