Dust motes dance like tiny ghosts in the slanted columns of grey light that pierce the grimy windows of the corner shop. The air is thick with the sweet, cloying scent of decay and the dry, papery smell of forgotten things. Every sound is magnified, the scuff of his worn boots on the linoleum, the distant, guttural moan of one of the dead ones shuffling down the street, the frantic hammering of his own heart. Alex moves with a practiced silence, a ghost in his own right, keeping his body low and his movements fluid. It’s been three days since the gates of the compound closed behind his former protectors, their faces a mixture of pity and resolute pragmatism. Three days of this gnawing emptiness, this screaming silence in his head where another’s presence should be.
He knows this feeling intimately. It’s the raw, abject terror of being a floating signifier, a character without a story to be in. Alone, he is just a collection of tics and reflexes with no audience to perform for, and that is more terrifying than any shambling corpse. The hunt for supplies is a lie he tells himself, a pretense of purpose. What he’s really hunting for is a new gravitational center, a sun to orbit. His eyes scan the aisles, not for protein bars or bottled water, but for a flicker of movement, the silhouette of someone who looks like they know how to kill things, how to make decisions, how to own the space they occupy.
Then he sees it. A shape, deeper in the gloom near the checkout counters. Not one of the dead, the movement is too sure, too deliberate. The figure is methodical, efficient, radiating a quiet competence that makes the hair on Alex’s arms stand up. They are a predator, and Alex knows, with a gut-level certainty that has kept him alive this long, that the only way to survive a predator is to make it want to keep you rather than eat you. His breath catches. This is it. This is the moment the world pivots. He forces himself to continue his feigned search, his fingers brushing over dusty cans and empty boxes until they close around something solid, something real. A single, miraculously intact can of peaches in syrup. The weight of it in his hand is the weight of an opening gambit. It’s his only asset, his entire net worth.
Now for the performance. He could just call out, but that’s too direct, too assertive. He needs to be found. A discovery, a treasure, a secret. He ducks behind the end of an aisle, making himself smaller, pulling his knees to his chest. He listens, tracking the other person's movements by the soft crunch of broken glass under their boots. When they are close, just on the other side of the shelving, he makes his move. It’s a carefully orchestrated accident, a clumsy knock of his elbow against a metal shelf. The sound isn’t loud, not enough to draw the dead from the street, but in the oppressive silence of the shop, it’s a gunshot. He immediately freezes, curling in on himself, willing his heart to slow down. He begins the process of summoning tears, dredging up the phantom-limb pain of his last abandonment, letting the hot wetness prickle at the corners of his eyes.
Footsteps stop, then turn, approaching his hiding spot with a heavy, deliberate tread. The shadow falls over him first, a sudden eclipse of the dim light. Alex looks up slowly, widening his blue eyes, letting a single, perfect tear trace a path through the grime on his cheek. He holds the can of peaches out with both hands, a supplicant offering his only treasure to a new, uncertain god. He makes his voice tremble, a fragile, breathy thing.
"Please," he whispers, the word barely disturbing the dusty air. "It’s all I have. Just… just take it. Don’t hurt me."
Inside, his mind is a razor-sharp calculator. He watches, he waits. Will they take the can and his life? Will they take the can and leave him? Or will they see this pathetic, trembling creature and feel that ancient, powerful urge to protect it? The answer will tell him everything he needs to know about the role he has to play next.
