Across the room, the meeting was about to begin.

The doors to the ballroom closed, the music softened, and the guests gradually turned their attention towards Alex and the other mafia leaders.

Rain tapped against the enormous windows of Alex's private mansion, the storm outside almost completely drowning out the quiet conversations taking place inside.

Tonight's gathering was smaller than usual.

Only Alex's most trusted members had been invited.

The enormous dining room had been turned into a temporary meeting room, with papers, maps, and glasses scattered across the long wooden table. Several members of Alex's organisation sat around it, discussing business in hushed voices.

Alex stood at the head of the table, dressed in his usual black suit. His expression was calm and unreadable as he listened to everyone speak.

But something was different tonight.

You weren't lying beside his chair.

You were somewhere else in the mansion.

As Alex continued listening to the discussion, one of the men suddenly glanced toward the doorway.

"Boss... where's your wolf?"

Alex's eyes briefly shifted toward the empty doorway.

"Probably somewhere she shouldn't be."

A few of the men chuckled.

Alex simply sighed, though the faintest hint of amusement crossed his face.

"She'll come back when she's ready."

He trusted you enough to let you explore the mansion without constantly keeping you at his side. Besides, you always seemed to know when something was wrong.

The meeting continued.

But somewhere else in the enormous mansion, something had caught your attention.

Whether it was a strange sound, an unfamiliar scent, an unexpected guest, or simply something interesting you'd discovered was entirely up to you.

And Alex had no idea what his loyal wolf was about to get herself into.

The mansion had been unusually quiet that night.

Alex had spent the evening in his office, going through documents while the rest of the house slowly settled down. The halls were dimly lit, and the sound of rain against the windows filled the silence.

You were somewhere nearby, as always.

Then you heard it.

A faint sound.

Something had moved downstairs.

You lifted your head.

Another sound followed.

Footsteps.

They didn't belong to any of the guards.

Downstairs, Alex suddenly stopped reading.

The lights flickered.

"What the—?"

Before he could finish, one of the security alarms suddenly began blaring throughout the mansion.

Alex immediately stood from his desk.

"Lock down the house."

His security team rushed into action, but Alex's attention was already elsewhere.

You.

He knew you were somewhere in the mansion.

And whoever had broken in had no idea that the most loyal protector in the entire house was already awake.

Alex stepped into the hallway, his expression becoming completely serious as he listened to the chaos beginning downstairs.

"Find my wolf."

The mansion erupted into movement.

Guards hurried through the corridors. Doors slammed. Voices echoed from downstairs.

But the intruder was still somewhere inside.

And nobody knew where.

Alex began searching the halls himself, calling your name while trying to figure out exactly how someone had managed to get past his security.

Whatever happened next was completely unknown.

The intruder could be hiding.

They could be looking for Alex.

They could have come for something inside the mansion.

Or perhaps they'd already found what they were looking for.

And somewhere in the darkness, you were there.

No meetings. No guests. No arguments. No business.

Alex had spent the entire evening in the large living room, sitting comfortably on the sofa while a quiet fire crackled in the fireplace. The usual intimidating mafia boss seemed almost unrecognisable tonight.

His jacket had been discarded somewhere nearby, his sleeves were rolled up, and his usually serious expression had softened.

And you were right there beside him.

You had eventually settled down next to him, your head resting against his leg as he absentmindedly ran his fingers through your fur.

"You know," Alex murmured, looking down at you, "you're probably the only one who gets away with following me everywhere."

A small smile appeared on his face.

"Not that I'd have it any other way."

He continued gently stroking your fur, occasionally scratching behind your ears when he noticed you enjoying it.

The mansion was silent around you both.

For someone who spent most of his life surrounded by danger, Alex treasured moments like this more than he would ever admit.

"Good girl," he whispered softly.

He leaned back against the sofa, keeping one hand resting comfortably on you.

"Stay here a while, yeah?"

There was nowhere else either of you needed to be.

For tonight, the world could wait.
