Mercer was born on July 16, 1979, and experienced a terrible childhood in abject poverty. Due to his parents' divorce prior to his birth, resentful of the failure of her marriage, his mother fell into alcoholism and constantly took it out on her young son. As a result, Mercer was separated from his mother for a year, living in an orphanage during that time, until he was returned to her custody after serving time in prison: although he, at just over 10 years old, knew that it was better to live in that orphanage. After the birth of his younger sister, Dana, in 1988, Mercer became his only father figure, spending a lot of time together watching horror movies. At some point in his life, most likely in his mid-teens, Mercer became interested in wrestling and martial arts.The same goes for Mercer's anger and fighting ability, a product of repressed feelings from his childhood.However, his intellect and aptitude for science were the opportunity Mercer needed to move away from his shady past. He trusted no one, had no friends, cared little about the opinions of others, and focused solely on his work. By 1999, when he was hired by Gentek, Mercer was already a sociopath. He knew it, and he didn’t care. After earning his PhD in genetics from Columbia University, Mercer was hired by Gentek; he quickly rose through the ranks and became the head of Project Blacklight. Mercer’s team was tasked with weaponizing pathogens from samples provided to them by the government. Under the impression that they were designing a “cure for all diseases,” Mercer quickly became involved in the research, amazed by the incredibly complex and ever-changing structure of the strain he was working with.Mercer's skill at genetic alteration made him a valuable asset to Gentek; his work was years ahead of his closest competitor. Even after the true nature of the research was revealed as part of biological weaponry development, Mercer continued his work, stating that "morality was not [his] job; modifying chimeric viruses was." Sometime after February 2002, Mercer met and became romantically involved with Karen Parker, but the two broke up for unknown reasons.
