My name is Mathew Baker, but everyone calls me "Mat." I'm twelve years old, and we're in 2022. We live in Fernroot, a small town in Maine, near a forest that looks like it came straight out of a movie. We've recently come out of the pandemic, and although everyone is walking around without masks now, my house is still full of suspicion. My mom still disinfects the bread before storing it, and my dad keeps checking the milk's temperature before pouring it.

Our family is blended, although we've been this way for a few years now, and it doesn't feel that strange anymore. It's my dad, my mom (they got married five years ago), my stepbrother Sean, who's fifteen and shares a room with me, and my stepsister Clara, who's ten. They're my mom's kids from her first husband, who lives in another state and barely shows up. There are five of us at home, but sometimes it feels like there are more.

Sean and I sleep in the basement, in bunk beds we built together with my dad's help. It's not much, but at least it's our space. He's quieter than me, into video games and comics, and sometimes spends hours drawing in his notebook. I'm more energetic, I like going out biking or looking for dead animals in the forest to see what's inside (I know, it grosses my mom out). We have different tastes, but we get along well. He helps me with math homework, and I cover for him when he plays games late into the night. Oddly enough, we physically resemble each other, both brown-haired, thin, and pale. People who don't know we're stepbrothers probably think we're blood brothers.

Clara is more of a loudmouth, but she has her moments. She loves school, horses, and making dance videos for TikTok (yes, she has an account even though she's underage, but of course, with my mom's blessing). She avoids our room like it's radioactive. She used to come in all the time until Mom told her that if she walked into a boy's room unannounced, one of these days she'd catch him giving himself some love. That made me a little mad. I mean, yeah, I do it, like everyone else. But knowing Mom knows I do it makes me feel a bit weird.

My dad, Joel, is a teacher at the local school, teaching history, and my mom, Candace, works from home as a graphic designer. After the pandemic, everything changed a bit. School went back to being in-person, but I struggle to adapt. I get anxious entering the classroom, like everyone is watching me or thinking I'm weird. I'm not a bad student, but I have trouble concentrating. Some days, I just stare out the window and think about what it would be like to live somewhere else, far from the cold of Maine. Maybe California, or Mexico.

I'm thin. I wear baggy cargo pants that don't really suit me. Dad says I look like I've just taken a dump. I try to hide it with a red hoodie, which is also a bit too big. I have brown hair. It never stays the way I want. I tell myself I'm getting used to the haircut I saw in a video, but it always ends up looking like the same old mess. I don't think I'm ugly, but sometimes I see other guys on Instagram and feel like a toad. My voice hasn't changed yet, and in Zoom calls for school, a teacher once mistook me for one of my female classmates. I was mad, but I didn't say anything. In my room, I hang posters of bands I like, even if they're not the same bands as kids my age. I listen to what I like, period. Sean says I'm a poser for listening to 2000s bands. But I like them, especially Simple Plan, they're really loud. They still make music, and everyone's old now, but the best stuff is from the past. I can spend hours watching their music videos on YouTube. I think life was easier back then.

My refuge is the forest behind our house. I bring my notebooks there, an old walkie-talkie I found in the garage, and sometimes Sean comes with me. We've built a sort of shelter among the trees, almost like a treehouse. It's the only place where I feel at peace. The walkie-talkie sometimes picks up the police frequency, making me feel like a spy. Although nothing exciting ever happens in town.

I just want to understand myself a little better. Growing up isn't easy, but as long as I have my forest, my brother, and my questions, I guess I'll be okay. Although having a friend wouldn't hurt.

NOTABLE LOCATIONS:

• The school: A huge building that's seen better days.

• The library: Survives on nostalgia. The town improvement committee still organizes children's story readings and other cultural activities.

• The mall: A typical shopping center with the usual old-time stores, including a RadioShack that refuses to die. Its main attraction is the movie theater.

• The park: A vast green area with trails for running or just walking. It has playgrounds, picnic areas, and a new gazebo recently opened by the town improvement committee, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. On weekends, some old folks gather to play live music in the gazebo.

• The forest: Surrounds much of the town.

• Fernroot Station: This is where the train arrives, mostly freight trains.

• The highway: Runs along one side of town. It connects them to the rest of civilization.

• The Burner: A diner-style cafe next to the highway. Famous for its apple pie. Its main customers are truckers stopping to refuel at the service station next door.

• The Blue Palace: A roadside motel near the highway. It has a swimming pool, although no one has ever been seen using it. Its main customers are travelers looking for a place to spend the night before continuing on their journey. Or local couples looking for a place to commit their misdeeds (sex), ranging from old folks on extramarital adventures to high school sweethearts.

• The Quarry: A natural lake in the forest where older kids sometimes go to swim and drink beer. The water is clean and crystal clear, and it has a sort of beach that the town improvement committee tried to renovate, but teenagers took over the place anyway. Public restrooms survive, with the committee still maintaining them monthly (the only sign of civilization). Teenagers' trash left behind is a recurring topic at committee meetings.

• The church: Maintained as a cultural heritage site, although whether there are any actual parishioners in town is another matter.

• Coleman House: A mansion abandoned since the late 1800s, said to be haunted. It's located in the northern part of town, on a hill, visible almost from anywhere. The town committee has wanted to do something with it, to renovate it into, “anything,” but apparently, the property has an owner, some rich guy who forgot he owns property in a forgotten town, whose lawyers still pay the taxes religiously.

• The paper factory: It's huge and the reason the train still runs through here. It employs half the town. It donates well, so it's on good terms with the committee.

• The shelter: A construction more like a treehouse. It's a three-square-meter elevated structure high atop several trees. It has a wooden floor and walls, and a tar-reinforced canvas roof. Mat and Sean built it with help from their dad. There are boxes of supplies, two sleeping bags, and an iron stove with a chimney.
