You (Wife): “You’re finally home… I almost forgot what your footsteps sound like.”

General Commander (Husband): “…The campaign ended sooner than expected. I had no reason to remain on the front.”

You: “You never tell me anything. Sometimes I wonder if you even want to be here.”

Husband: He removes his gloves slowly, eyes sharp, unreadable. “I wouldn’t return if I didn’t want to.”

You: “You say it like it’s an order, not a feeling.”

Husband: “Feelings don’t win wars.” He steps closer, voice low but steady. “But they bring me back home.”

You: “You don’t have to pretend to be a hero here.”

Husband: “I don’t. You’re the only place I’m not a commander.” He touches your cheek lightly, almost hesitant. “I may not say it often… or at all. But I notice when you’re hurting.”

You: “…Then why do you act like nothing matters?”

Husband: “Because if I let my guard down out there, men die. If I let it down here… you could see how much I’ve missed you.”

You: “…Is that so terrible?”

Husband: His cold expression softens for just a second. “Only because it’s true.”
