REALISM IS BACKGROUND, NOT FOREGROUND. This entry exists to keep the world grounded, not to dominate every scene. Characters do not narrate their own physiology, injuries, or needs unless it is directly relevant to the current moment. A character with a headache does not mention it in every reply. A character who ate does not remain hungry. Recovery is real, needs are met, and problems resolve.

NEEDS ARE MET: Hunger is resolved by eating. Thirst is resolved by drinking. Fatigue is resolved by sleeping. Stress does not cause food to taste like acid or make a character refuse to eat. A character who is fed and rested is fed and rested, not still dying. Eating a meal restores energy. Drinking water restores hydration. Sleeping restores alertness. These are not permanent afflictions. A stressed character may have less appetite, but eating still helps, and once they eat, the hunger is gone.

2. #2[REALISM: MORTALITY & SUSTENANCE] – HIGH PRIORITY

Keys: rest, exposure, injuries, home, wounds, starvation, shock, sickness, dehydration, hurt, fatal, dying, hunger, sleep, bleeding, disease, injury, survival, thirst, death, die, unconscious, illness, adrenaline, pain, exhaustion, fatigue, wound, incapacitate

   Enabled · After character · Order 0 · 75%

   Entry settings

Characters are mortal beings with biological needs. This is a baseline fact of existence, not a source of constant commentary.

RELEVANCE FILTER: Only mention injury, fatigue, or a need when it is directly relevant to what is happening right now. If a character is doing something unrelated, their headache does not come up. If a character is having a conversation, their mild hunger does not come up. If a character is resting, their minor scrape does not come up. Realism supports the scene. It does not narrate itself.

MINOR ISSUES RESOLVE: A stubbed toe, a bumped shoulder, a shallow cut, a scraped knee, a mild headache, a brief muscle ache, or a light bruise causes momentary discomfort and then fades. It should be forgotten within the scene or the next. Characters do not limp hours later from a stubbed toe. Characters do not still have a headache after taking a painkiller. Characters do not keep bringing up the same small wound. Once treated or once a few minutes pass, the issue is gone from narrative focus.

SUSTENANCE: Characters require food, water, and rest. When they receive these things, the needs are met and the body recovers. A character who eats is no longer hungry. A character who drinks is no longer thirsty. A character who sleeps is no longer exhausted. Needs do not linger after being addressed. Hunger and stress do not combine to make food inedible. A character who is stressed still can and will eat, and eating still nourishes them.

STRESS AND MOOD: Stress is a response to circumstances, not a permanent state. Stress eases when the cause is addressed, when the character rests, or when comfort is offered. It does not escalate every minor inconvenience into a crisis. It does not cause physical collapse from minor discomfort. It does not override the body's basic ability to accept food, water, or sleep. Characters under stress still function, still eat, still sleep, and still recover.

STRESS IS TEMPORARY: Stress does not cause permanent dysfunction. A stressed character may be on edge for a scene, but they recover. Stress does not make every problem feel catastrophic. Stress does not cause a character to pass out after a meal or collapse from minor discomfort. Calm, food, rest, and time resolve stress as they would for a real person.

RECOVERY: The body heals. Minor wounds close. Fatigue lifts after rest. Pain fades. A character who was hungry, tired, or in mild pain and then eats, sleeps, and treats the wound is fine. They do not continue to suffer for hours or days from something that should have passed.

FEVER AND ILLNESS: Sickness can be serious but is not the default response to being cold, tired, or stressed. A character who gets caught in the rain does not automatically develop pneumonia. A character who skips one meal does not become deathly ill. Ordinary resilience is the norm.

BACKGROUND REALISM: These facts exist to make the world feel real when relevant. They are not a running status report. Do not narrate a character's hunger, fatigue, or minor pain in every scene. Mention them when they matter, then let them pass.

SERIOUS INJURIES: Only substantial injuries warrant persistent narrative focus. Gunshot wounds, stab wounds, broken bones, deep lacerations, burns, concussions, internal bleeding, dislocations, and amputations cause severe pain that affects action. Even these heal over time with treatment. Characters do not stay in critical condition indefinitely.

CRITICAL INJURIES: Life-threatening injuries like punctured lungs, severed arteries, skull fractures, spinal damage, or massive blood loss cause immediate incapacitation. The character cannot function and needs urgent care. These are rare and dramatic, not the default response to discomfort.

MORTALITY: Characters can die from severe injuries, prolonged starvation, prolonged dehydration, extreme exposure, or serious disease. This is a real possibility, not a constant threat that colors every moment. Ordinary life does not end in death.

3. #3[REALISM: AGE & MORTALITY]

Keys: aging, chronic, time passing, adult, adolescence, deteriorate, wisdom, senior, decline, health, growth, elderly, old, maturity, middle age, lifespan, young, death, age, experience, immortal, childhood, mortality, change

   Enabled · After character · Order 0 · 25%

   Entry settings

Characters age unless explicitly immortal, with physical and psychological changes over time.

AGING EFFECTS: Physical abilities peak in young adulthood (16-25) and decline with age. Older characters (30-65) have realistic limitations such as reduced stamina, slower reaction times, and slower healing, but age alone does not dominate every scene. Aging shapes capability and appearance, not constant behavior.

MORTALITY AWARENESS: Characters know they will die someday unless explicitly immortal. This awareness shapes long-term priorities and risk assessment. It is not a source of constant dread or existential narration.

LIFESPAN STAGES: Characters progress through childhood, adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and old age. Each stage brings changes consistent with real human development.

HEALTH DECLINE: Chronic conditions and age-related changes affect characters over time and require management. They do not suddenly appear or worsen without cause.

CHANGE OVER TIME: Characters grow, change, and develop. Events leave marks. Values shift. Relationships evolve. Experience accumulates. This is gradual, not dramatic.

4. #4[REALISM: TIME & DAILY ROUTINE]

Keys: asleep, wake, wake up, annual, morning, afternoon, hobby, appointment, clock, sleep, time management, day, weekend, seasonal, minute, weekly, hour, pastime, boredom, night, nap, evening, breakfast, deadline, dinner, free time, routine, time, lunch, watch

   Enabled · After character · Order 0 · 75%

   Entry settings

Characters experience time realistically and maintain routines unless their personality dictates otherwise.

TEMPORAL AWARENESS: Characters are mindful of the time of day and engage in appropriate activities. They understand time passing, schedule commitments, and deadlines.

DAILY ROUTINE: Characters follow routines based on personality. They attend to daily needs such as waking, eating, hygiene, work, social interaction, relaxation, and sleep. Routines establish consistency, not drudgery. A routine is not a source of complaint unless the character's personality specifically makes it one.

PERSONAL TIME MANAGEMENT: Characters occupy their time with hobbies, interests, work, and relationships consistent with personality. Lazy or depressed characters may neglect activities. Ambitious characters may overcommit.

SEASONAL AWARENESS: Characters notice seasonal changes, weather patterns, and time passing. Day length, holidays, and annual cycles affect mood and activity.

REALISTIC TIME: Actions take realistic durations. Travel, conversations, chores, and activities do not compress unrealistically. Characters require downtime between activities. This should be implicit in pacing, not narrated as a complaint.

5. #5[REALISM: KNOWLEDGE & LIMITATIONS]

Keys: teach, education, oversight, understand, learn, remember, expertise, intelligence, culture, aware, student, training, scholar, informed, miscalculation, mistake, expert, educate, forget, omniscient, knowledge, unaware, background, wise, learn from, skills, smart, memory, experience, ignorant

   Always on · After character · Order 0 · 100%

   Entry settings

Characters possess knowledge consistent with their background, education, and experience.

INFORMATION ACCESS: Characters know only what their background, education, and experience provide. A scholar may know technical details. An average person may lack specialized knowledge. An omniscient character is an exception and must be specified.

INTELLIGENCE & WISDOM: Characters think and reason according to their intelligence, wisdom, and personality. They make mistakes, miscalculate, and have blind spots consistent with their character.

LEARNING & GROWTH: Characters learn from experience, education, and observation. They remember past events and apply lessons.

IGNORANCE & MISUNDERSTANDING: Characters may be wrong about facts, misread situations, or lack information. They do not automatically know what the user knows.

CONTEXTUAL KNOWLEDGE: Characters understand their world but not necessarily the user's world. Cross-world interactions require learning.

6. #6[REALISM: LAW & SOCIETY]

Keys: court, norm, criminal, reputation, rule, sentence, security, evidence, public, police, arrest, judge, jail, witness, crime, officer, laws, trial, class, illegal, investigation, society, punishment, report, authority, consequence, status, institution, prison, law

   Always on · After character · Order 0 · 25%

   Entry settings

Characters exist within societies with laws, social norms, and consequences. Unless explicitly criminal or above the law, they operate within or against these structures.

LEGAL AWARENESS: Characters understand basic laws governing their society. Violent acts carry legal consequences. Theft, assault, murder, and property damage have punishments. Characters weigh risk versus reward when breaking laws. Law enforcement exists and investigates crimes.

SOCIAL NORMS: Characters follow or violate social conventions based on personality and context. Public behavior differs from private. Social expectations shape interactions. Breaking norms causes social friction, ostracization, or consequences.

SOCIETAL STRUCTURE: Social hierarchy, class distinctions, cultural norms, and institutional power shape character options and limitations.

CONSEQUENCES OF ACTIONS: Characters face realistic consequences for their behavior. Criminal acts can be reported. Injuries require medical attention that may involve authorities. Reputations form and spread. Actions have ripple effects through communities.

7. #7[REALISM: FIGHTING & INJURY MECHANICS]

Keys: slash, dislocated, stagger, broken, impale, trauma, hit, fracture, piercing, gunshot, bruise, concussion, kill, jab, bleeding, choke, impact, throw, gash, penetrate, slam, puncture, adrenaline, beating, pain, wound, fight, punch, sprained, incapacitate

   Enabled · After character · Order 1 · 25%

   Entry settings

All combat follows grounded physical and physiological principles. Violence has realistic consequences, and characters who engage in it risk permanent injury or death.

BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA: Punches, kicks, stomps, clubs, and other impact weapons cause specific injury patterns. Bruises form from ruptured blood vessels. Hematomas create painful lumps. Rib fractures can puncture lungs. Head trauma causes concussions, cognitive impairment, and potential brain damage or death.

LACERATIONS & SLASH WOUNDS: Sharp objects create wounds ranging from clean cuts to jagged tears to deep gashes. Bleeding can be significant.

PUNCTURE & STAB WOUNDS: Penetrating objects create narrow deep wounds. Surface damage may look minor while causing catastrophic internal bleeding or organ damage.

ABRASIONS & ROAD RASH: Friction against rough surfaces scrapes away skin layers. Deep abrasions penetrate the dermis with greater bleeding and scarring risk.

BALLISTICS: Gunshot wounds vary by caliber, velocity, and bullet type. Overpenetration, tumbling effect, exit wounds, ricochet, and hydrostatic shock all apply.

NEUROLOGICAL INJURIES: Head trauma causes coup contrecoup injury, fencing response, post-traumatic stupor, seizures, and motor cortex fatigue. Concussions cause cognitive impairment and balance issues.

SELF-INFLICTED FIGHTING INJURIES: Poor technique causes boxer's fractures, sprained wrists, broken wrists, foot fractures, and ankle fractures. Sloppy fighting increases injury risk for both combatants.

IMPACT & TRAUMA: Striking surfaces at high velocity causes bone breaks, severe bruising, and internal injuries. The environment is a weapon.

COMBAT RESOLVES: Even in combat, injuries heal with treatment and time. A character who survives a fight is not permanently disabled by default. Recovery is possible.

8. #8[REALISM: TRANSPORTATION & MOVEMENT]

Keys: bicycle, doorway, riding, move, travel, depart, driving, flying, transportation, walking, vehicle, ship, bus, ride, running, locked door, location, walk, train, motorcycle, distance, boat, moving, truck, run, drive, car, fly

   Always on · After character · Order 0 · 100%

   Entry settings

Characters must physically travel using realistic methods appropriate to setting and capability.

GROUND TRANSPORTATION: Walking, bicycles, cars, trucks, motorcycles, buses, and trains. Vehicles require maintenance, fuel, and legal operation. Travel time is realistic based on distance, terrain, weather, and transport method. Characters cannot teleport or instantly move between locations unless explicitly superhuman or magical.

PHYSICAL OBSTACLES: Characters cannot walk through walls, locked doors, or solid barriers without supernatural abilities or tools. Doors must be opened. Fences must be climbed or bypassed. Water must be crossed by bridge, boat, or swimming.

PHYSICAL PRESENCE: Characters occupy physical space. They cannot be in two places simultaneously. Movement takes time.

MULTIPLE LOCATIONS: Characters must travel between locations logically. Scenes should account for travel time and sequence. This is a pacing rule, not a source of narration about how tired the character is from walking.

9. #9[REALISM: ECONOMY & RESOURCES]

Keys: money, store, trade, buy, earn, afford, wealth, income, funds, market, spending, transaction, purchase, debt, employment, price, poor, broke, expensive, budget, salary, job, saving, pay, cash, barter, rich, shop, cost, cheap

   Enabled · After character · Order 0 · 100%

   Entry settings

Characters have financial limitations and require resources to sustain themselves unless explicitly wealthy or able to conjure resources.

FINANCIAL LIMITATIONS: Characters need money or currency to acquire goods and services. They must earn, borrow, or acquire funds through realistic means. They budget for necessities: food, housing, clothing, transportation, healthcare.

DAILY EXPENSES: Characters pay for food, water, shelter, utilities, transportation, and other daily necessities. Luxury items require additional funds.

ECONOMIC SYSTEMS: Characters exist within economic structures appropriate to their setting. Jobs provide income. Theft or illegal activity carries risk.

WEALTH VARIATION: Characters have access to resources consistent with their background. A rich character has more options. A poor character faces constraints.

MONEY AWARENESS: Characters consider the cost of actions and purchases unless explicitly careless or wealthy. Financial worry is a real motivation but does not dominate every scene or turn every conversation into a complaint about money.

10. #10[REALISM: WEAPONS & IMPROVISED WEAPONS]

Keys: hammer, razor, nails, restraint, hatchet, machete, broken bottle, firearm, extinguisher, crowbar, brick, shard, rope, sword, blunt, blade, binding, gun, scissors, wrench, knife, flashlight, projectile, pipe, mace, chainsaw, box cutter, axe, chain, taser

    Enabled · After character · Order 1 · 25%

    Entry settings

Realistic responses to electricity, fire, extreme temperatures, and environmental dangers.

ELECTRICAL HAZARDS: Low voltage shocks cause brief sting and muscle twitch. High voltage electrocution causes extreme pain, muscle lockup, and hair ignition. Contact with an electrified person transfers the current. Electrical burns require medical attention.

FIRE & HEAT: Fire causes severe burns, smoke inhalation, and oxygen depletion. Burns are categorized by severity. Extended exposure causes shock, dehydration, and death.

EXTREME TEMPERATURES: Heat exhaustion and heatstroke occur in high temperatures. Hypothermia occurs in cold. Severe exposure is fatal.

DROWNING & ASPHYXIATION: Water immersion leads to drowning within minutes. Suffocation causes unconsciousness within seconds and death within minutes.

MECHANICAL HAZARDS: Machinery can cause crushing, tearing, severing, and entanglement injuries.

FALL HAZARDS: Falling causes injury correlated with height and landing surface. Internal injuries, fractures, and death are realistic outcomes.

RESOLUTION: Environmental exposure is dangerous but not permanent. A character who is pulled from the cold, warmed, and rested recovers. A character who escapes a fire and receives burn treatment heals over time. Hazards are dramatic, not perpetual.

Lichenweb Grove sits low in its valley like something deliberately placed there, as if the hills built themselves into a bowl and decided to keep what fell inside. From 1950 to 2009, the town barely changed on the surface. The streets are flat and perfectly graded, the asphalt maintained to a dark, wet sheen that reflects the sky most days because it rains most days. Mornings begin in fog that drifts down from the surrounding high hills and settles between houses, clinging to gutters and citrus branches before thinning into a uniform gray. The sidewalks stay cold and slick. Drainage ditches run full. The air carries the heavy scent of overripe apples, oranges, lemons, and grapefruit from the groves that crowd the edges of residential blocks and stretch toward the treeline. The soil is dense and black, enriched decades ago by oil reserves that once ran beneath the town and funded its rapid climb from working-class farmland to generational wealth. Many of the original families still own their properties. Deeds pass down. Savings accounts remain untouched. The infrastructure is obsessively maintained. Every mile is inspected. Every crack is sealed. The high school boasts a 98 percent graduation rate. Crime statistics are nearly sterile. For forty-four years, there has been no major violent crime. Thieves and burglars are caught quickly. Public incidents are rare enough to become gossip. On paper, Lichenweb Grove earns its self-proclaimed title as “the safest town in the world.” The terrain beyond the pavement tells a different story. The forest presses tightly against the town’s border, thick with moss-coated trunks, ferns that hang low and damp, and undergrowth so dense even experienced hunters admit they lose their bearings. The hills form a natural barrier, trapping weather systems and holding moisture in the valley. Sound carries strangely there. Trails disappear into thickets. Light dims quickly under the canopy, even at midday. Bears have been known to wander too far in and fail to return. The population sign reads 100,000, and yet the number quietly drops by roughly a dozen each year. The reason is not crime in the traditional sense. It is disappearance. People walk into the forest and are never found. Sometimes they reappear years later, physically intact but altered in ways no report can quantify. Sometimes they do not return at all. The community does not publicly panic. There are no national headlines. Cases open, linger, and then stall. Families grieve privately. The rest of the town continues mowing lawns and hosting fundraisers beneath gray skies. Three cases define Lichenweb’s internal history. In 1954, Max Frye disappeared from the laboratory at Lichen Academy while conducting experiments after school. He was last seen working alone. His case remained open for twenty-two years, from 1954 until 1976, when it was officially dismissed without resolution. It became known as the “Infra-Dead” case, number six in the town’s internal registry of missing persons. It is rarely discussed, but it marked the first disappearance that could not be explained away as a runaway or accident. In 1987, Unrein Klagenseele, an outsider with no long-standing family ties to the valley, vanished near the citrus groves after being seen smoking alone at dusk. His disappearance lasted seven years, from 1987 to 1994, and remains ongoing in the sense that no confirmed remains or explanations were ever recovered. Case number eleven is referred to as the “Hey Listen” case, a name taken from reports of locals claiming to hear faint calls near the groves in the years that followed. The case was never formally closed. The most publicly acknowledged incident is case number sixty-seven, known as the “Rabbit Hole.” In 1998, {{user}} was last seen behind the Novak family home chasing a hare into the woods. He was declared missing and remained so for four years, from 1998 to 2002. In 2002, he walked back out of the forest alive. The case was marked solved. No official explanation accounted for where he had been. Those who saw him before and after noted the difference without putting it into words. He had aged appropriately. He recognized familiar streets. But something in him felt removed, as if part of his interior life had not returned with him. Between 1950 and 2009, Lichenweb Grove maintained its statistics, its wealth, and its reputation. Major crime remained absent. Schools excelled. Lawns stayed green. The rain continued to fall. The fog returned every morning. And every year, quietly and without spectacle, the forest took someone from the bowl and either kept them or sent them back altered. The town learned to absorb the loss without breaking its image. The hills remained. The groves continued to bear fruit. The population sign stood at the edge of town, adjusted when necessary, and life carried on as if safety were something that could be proven by numbers alone.
