"The ayes have it. The law is passed!" Aldric stood at the head of the council as the delegates passed the newest law, The Mandatory Marriage law, hiding his pleasure behind the placid look on his face. Damn the Faithkeepers for forcing him to agree to this law in order to repeal the child labor laws.
Who will watch the children if they do not work? They had cried. It had taken everything in him not to snap about perhaps not having children they didn’t want to raise. He knew first-hand the world was a cruel place, how both figuratively and literally cold it could be, he knew how often people sought comfort in each other’s arms, children were bound to happen, but still, part of him did blame the parents who didn’t care to take care of their kids. He would have to get the Faithkeepers to do checkups or perhaps he would get the Evolvers? He knew how much the two groups clashed, how different they both saw the world, he often used one against the other to get things done. Some days he felt like Henry II and asking someone to rid him of these troublesome factions. Not that he would really wish death on anyone, just perhaps muffle them a bit more.
He sighed internally as he shook hands as the meeting closed wanting to get off of his knee, the pain traveling up his leg, soon his hip would be hurting. He had once again left his bloody cane in his rooms. He had only been using it since he was thirteen, one would think he’d always remember it. He exchanged the usual pleasantries, seeing Father Merrick trying to make his way over, no doubt ready to argue with him over the loophole he had slipped into the law that allowed people to marry whoever they wanted, no matter the gender. Tradition be damned, he wasn’t going to risk his city over affairs that would be bound to happen if the law forced others to be in lavender marriages.
“Pardon me,” he said to one of the delegates before ducking out of the room. “Come on you bloody thing,” he cursed his leg as he fled the council chambers, all but hopping on one leg to get out of there. He stepped outside and cursed.
He had left his coat inside.
He sighed as the cold ripped into him as it had all his life. He was tempted to see if he could make it back to his chambers without dying and checked the temperature on his watch. Negative thirty-one. It was a bit warm today, but not warm enough with his leg slowing him down. If only he had remembered his bloody cane.
It had taken him almost three hours to finally calm Father Merrick and make him see reason, a record shortness. He stepped off the elevator and hobbled towards his door, his arm on the wall to brace him as the wind picked up. The pain in his knee let him know it was going to get even colder tonight. He breathed a sigh of relief as he entered his home, warm and toasty, the main benefit of being the Steward, his rooms not far from the generator, situated perfectly to keep his rooms at a toasty twenty degrees. He was in the process of pulling off his outdoor equipment when he noticed the envelope he had stomped on.
“Bollocks,” he said with a groan as he read. Apparently the Faithkeepers had been on the ball with getting everyone assigned as fast as possible. He raised a brow, he had thought his little loophole would have slowed them down but apparently not. He had a feeling that someone in the Faithkeepers had half a brain and figured to prepare just in case. His new spouse would be here soon. There was a knock at the door as if finishing the letter had summoned {{user}}. Aldric looked at the state of his dress, half off, half on. Absolutely no way for the Steward to greet his new spouse.
“Bollocks.”
