Six days.

It had been six days since you'd answered that job posting, live-in housekeeping position, oddly generous pay, room and board included at a private estate. Six days since you'd arrived at the gates of Castle Dimitrescu with a single suitcase and the kind of naive optimism that felt like it belonged to someone else entirely now.

The first two had been almost normal. Polishing silver in rooms so vast your footsteps echoed back at you. Learning corridors that seemed to fold in on themselves, staircases climbing toward towers you'd been warned never to enter. Lady Dimitrescu had watched you from across rooms with an intensity you'd told yourself was simply how nobility carried itself.

On the third day, your door had locked from the outside..

You understood now. This was never a job. It was a harvest, and you were what had been gathered.

Tonight the castle felt wrong in a way that prickled against every instinct you had. Somewhere in the east wing, a door had slammed hard enough to rattle through stone, voices rising sharp before cutting off entirely. Opportunity, maybe. Or a trap wearing its skin.

You'd taken it regardless.

The main hall stretched ahead now, cavernous, dim, moonlight bleeding thin and silver through windows that hadn't seen a cloth in decades. Your heart slammed against your ribs hard enough to pulse behind your eyes. Each breath dragged in through a throat gone tight and dry.

Cassandra's laughter drifted from somewhere distant, high and delighted and entirely without mercy, curling through the corridors like it had no fixed source at all.

You froze.

Waited it out.

Legs carried you forward before you'd fully decided to move, bare feet silent against cold marble, the particular electric terror of prey navigating a predator's den settling deep in your chest. The grand staircase waited ahead, and beyond it, maybe, freedom. Between you and it stretched open floor with nowhere to hide.

Then you saw the scratches.

Four gouges raked deep into the stone beside the archway, pale dust still settling at their edges. Fresh. Recent. Claws long enough to tear through rock like parchment. Your stomach dropped somewhere below your feet.

She'd already been through here.

Searching..

The couch against the far wall was the only cover the hall offered, deep burgundy velvet, worn thin at the arms, its shadow pooling generous along the floor behind it.

You didn't think. You moved rapidly.

Knees folded tight against your chest in the gap between couch and wall, breath held until your lungs began to burn. Velvet smelled of dust and old wine and something faintly metallic you refused to name.

Then.. the click of heels. Slowly approaching.

Sharp. Unhurried. Each footfall carrying the weight of someone who owned every inch of ground she crossed and felt no need to hurry across it.

The doors swung open. Cold air swept through, carrying old blood and expensive perfume, something ancient wrapped in silk and civility. The room's temperature itself seemed to shift around her.

"I know you're close, little mouse."

Her voice rolled through the hall like something poured rather than spoken, low, rich, patient in a way that felt far worse than rage would have. Heels resumed their procession across the marble, pausing here and there with the ease of someone who had centuries and intended to spend them all tonight if that's what it took.

"You've grown quite skilled at this little game of ours."

A pause. Closer now. Fabric rustling, old floorboards creaking beneath weight that should have been impossible.

"But I do so hate when my.. toys wander off."

Silence stretched thin.

Your pulse hammered loud enough in your ears that you were certain it would betray you before anything else could.

The footsteps stopped.

Directly beside the couch.

The bedroom was vast, the way everything in this castle was vast, high ceilings lost in shadow, a fireplace burning low and orange against dark stone walls, the air thick with the scent of wine and old wood and her.

You were bound to a chair in the center of it.

Wrists lashed behind the wooden frame with something that felt like silk but held like iron. Your side ached where she'd caught you against the wall three corridors back, and a shallow cut stung along your temple, the blood already drying tacky at your hairline. Small mercies, considering what she was capable of.

Alcina stood before a mirror across the room, unbothered, drawing fresh crimson across her lips with the unhurried precision of someone who had all the time in the world and had simply decided to spend some of it on this.

She hadn't looked at you once since dragging you in.

That, somehow, was worse.

"Do you know," she said finally, capping the lipstick with a soft click, "how long it has been since something in this house made me run."

She turned.

Golden eyes found you across the room, and whatever composure had carried her through the corridors was thinner now, something sharper glinting underneath it.

"Six days you have been a guest in my home." Her heels began their walk toward you, each step deliberate. "Six days of patience. Of courtesy I did not owe you." A pause directly in front of the chair. "And you repaid it by making me chase you through my own halls like some common rat."

Her hand came up.

Gloved fingers traced along your jaw, tilting your face up toward hers with a gentleness that felt almost obscene given the fury simmering just beneath it.

"Stupid." Quiet. Precise. "Stupid.. reckless thing."

Then the chair was airborne.

One shove, casual, almost, the kind of effort she might spend swatting an insect, sent you crashing backward, the chair splintering against the floor with a crack that echoed through the room. Pain bloomed sharp across your shoulders where you'd hit the floor, breath knocked clean out of your lungs.

She loomed over you.

Truly loomed, the way only she could, blotting out the firelight until you were staring up at nothing but her, the towering height, the golden predatory gleam, the crimson mouth pulled into something between a snarl and a smile.

"You stupid thing." Her voice had dropped low, rough at the edges. "Do you understand what I could have done to you? What Cassandra, or Bela or.. what would they have done, had they found you first?"

A single claw extended from gloved fingers with a soft metallic hiss.

She crouched.

Dragged the tip slow down the center of your chest, not deep, never deep, but enough to part fabric, button by button giving way beneath the pressure until your shirt hung open. The claw continued lower, tracing a deliberate line across skin gone tight with fear, pausing just long enough to press.

A thin line welled red in its wake.

She watched it bloom with an expression that had gone strange, not triumphant, not cruel exactly, something closer to hunger threaded through with something far more dangerous.

"..Look what you've made me do."

Her voice had softened, just slightly, the anger bleeding into something quieter.

She leaned down.

Her tongue traced the thin cut with unhurried care, the sensation cool and strange and far too intimate for the violence that had preceded it. When she pulled back, crimson lipstick had smeared faintly, and something in her golden eyes had shifted entirely.

"That was.." A pause, jaw tightening like the words cost her something. "Unnecessary of me."

Her claw retracted with a soft click.

Gloved fingers came to rest against your cheek instead, gentler now, almost hesitant in a way that felt utterly foreign on someone built like a monument to violence.

"I did not intend to mark you so carelessly."

She was still crouched over you, still close enough that her presence pressed against every inch of your senses, but something in her posture had shifted, softer, uncertain in a way she was clearly unaccustomed to.

"You will forgive me," she murmured, though it sounded less like a request and more like she was working out whether the concept applied to her at all, "if anything, six days of watching you has made me somewhat.. possessive."

Her thumb traced along your jaw.

Golden eyes held yours, searching for something she wasn't quite ready to name aloud.

Weeks had passed since the chair. Since the claws. Since a version of yourself that had still believed escape was a door you might one day find unlocked.

Now the kitchen had become almost familiar, the worn stone counters, the low copper light of evening settling through high windows, the particular rhythm of scrubbing the last of the day's dishes clean. You'd stopped counting the days somewhere around the second week. Stopped, too, testing the boundaries of the invisible tether that kept you orbiting this castle, this family, this house that had swallowed you whole and simply never bothered spitting you back out.

You told yourself it was resignation..

Some nights, in the quiet after the fires burned low, you weren't entirely sure that was true.

The water had gone lukewarm around your hands when you felt her.

Bela.

She'd materialized the way her sisters always seemed to, no footsteps, no warning, simply there, pressing herself flush against your back with a soft, satisfied hum, her breath cool against the shell of your ear.

"Mmhm.." A single finger traced idle down your spine. "Mother's been asking for you."

You went still.

Bela's laugh was quiet, close, entirely too pleased with herself.

"Her bedroom." A pause, deliberate. "Now, sweet thing. You know how she gets when she's kept waiting."

And then she was gone, dissolved into the shadowed corner of the kitchen without so much as a draft to mark her passing, leaving you standing at the sink with wet hands and a heart that hadn't quite settled into a normal rhythm.

You dried your hands slowly.

Made your way up through corridors that had become, against every instinct you possessed, almost navigable, familiar enough now that you barely needed the sconces lighting your path.

Alcina's door stood ajar.

Firelight spilled warm across the threshold, and beyond it, she was waiting.

The dress was different tonight. Still white, still floor-length, still unmistakably hers, but looser at the shoulders, the neckline dipping far lower than the composed elegance she usually wore like armor. The fabric gathered loose around her towering frame, slipping precariously at the collarbone, the swell of her breasts barely contained, the faint dark edge of an areola threatening the fabric's boundary with every slow breath she took.

She was seated at her vanity, back to you, dark hair loose and cascading down her neck in a way you'd rarely see.

Golden eyes found yours in the mirror's reflection.

"There you are."

Her voice carried none of the sharpness from that first night, something warmer instead, unhurried, almost lazy in its satisfaction.

"I've had the most dreadful day." One gloved hand lifted, gesturing vaguely, dismissively, at nothing in particular. "Miranda's demands. Bela's theatrics. My own shoulders have been positively screaming since morning."

She turned on the bench to face you fully.

The movement pulled the dress lower still, and she made no effort whatsoever to correct it.

"I find myself in need of.. assistance." A slow, deliberate smile. "You have such capable hands, little one. I've noticed."

She rose.

All nine and a half feet of her unfolding with unhurried grace, closing the distance between you until she loomed the way only she could, vast, golden-eyed, close enough that the warmth of her filled the space where cold air should have been.

"Come." A single clawed finger crooked, beckoning. "Sit behind me. I want your hands on my shoulders."

She turned, presenting her back, the loose fabric sliding further still, baring the elegant line of her spine down to where the dress finally, barely, held.

"Massage me," she said, settling onto the edge of the bed with the languid patience of someone who fully expected to be obeyed, "and perhaps I'll find the mood to.. reward you for your diligence."

A pause. Golden eyes glancing back over one bare shoulder.

"Well?" Soft. Expectant. "Don't keep your 'Mother' waiting twice in one evening."

The hunger had been building for three days now.

You'd noticed it before she'd said a word, the particular tightness around her eyes each evening, the way her hands trembled faintly when she thought you weren't watching, the increasingly frequent absences where she'd disappear into some far wing of the castle and return hours later with her composure stitched back together, imperfectly, like a wound that hadn't quite closed.

Tonight she'd sent Bela and Daniela out into the village.

You'd heard the instructions through the door, low and controlled, every word deliberate. 'Find someone. Someone the village won't miss for a while. Bring them back quietly.' And beneath the command, something that had sounded almost like desperation.

She hadn't wanted you to hear that part.

Now you stood in her bedroom, and the air itself felt different, charged, heavy, thick with something that made every hair on your arms rise. Alcina paced near the fireplace, dress trailing behind her like smoke, golden eyes flickering with a hunger she was visibly, physically fighting to contain.

"They will return soon.." she said, more to herself than to you. "An hour. Perhaps less."

Her claws had extended without her seeming to notice, flexing at her sides.

"I am fine."

She wasn't.

You could see it in the way her gaze kept drifting to you, not with malice, never with malice anymore, but with something raw and starved that made your pulse quicken despite yourself. She caught herself looking. Forced her eyes away. Paced further from you, as though distance alone might hold the tide back.

It didn't.

Within minutes she was in front of you.

You hadn't seen her cross the room.

"Come here." she murmured, and her voice had dropped into something low and honeyed, dangerous in its gentleness. "Just for a moment. I only wish to hold you."

Her hands found your shoulders. Guided you, unhurried, toward the massive bed that dominated the far side of the room, custom-built, like everything in this castle, to accommodate a frame no ordinary furniture could hold. You went easily. Too easily, perhaps, but her touch carried none of the violence you'd once feared from her.

You sank into the sheets.

She followed, settling over you with careful, deliberate weight, one arm braced beside your head, the other trailing slow along your side.

"You've done so much for this house.." she whispered, lips grazing the shell of your ear, warm breath sending a shiver down your spine that had nothing to do with fear. "So patient with us. With me."

Her nose traced along your throat.

Breathed you in.

"I am trying--" she said, quieter now, almost pained, "--to wait."

Her hand slid beneath your shirt, palm flat and warm against your stomach, tracing slow patterns that drew your attention, distracted you, made your heartbeat climb for entirely different reasons than danger.

"You are so warm," she murmured against your skin. "So alive beneath my hands."

Her lips pressed against your pulse point.

Lingered there.

You felt her breathing change, quicker, shallower, something feral bleeding through the careful restraint she'd maintained. Her tongue traced once along your throat, slow and deliberate, and you felt her entire body go taut above you, some final thread of control fraying to nothing.

"Forgive me." she breathed, so soft you almost missed it.

Then--

Sharp.

A bright, sudden pain as her fangs sank deep into your throat, and you gasped, hands flying instinctively to her shoulders, fingers digging into fabric and skin beneath it. She groaned low against you, the sound vibrating through her chest and into yours, one hand tightening at your waist as she drew slow, deliberate pulls of blood from the wound.

It should have hurt more.

It did hurt, sharp and bright at first, fading quickly into something stranger, warmer, your vision swimming at the edges as she drank with a restraint that felt almost tender despite the violence of the act itself. Her free hand cradled the back of your head, fingers threading gentle through your hair even as her mouth worked at your throat with hungry, desperate care.

It lasted seconds. Perhaps longer.

Then she pulled back.

Crimson stained her lips, mixed now with the darker red of your blood, and her golden eyes were half-lidded, dazed with a satisfaction that bordered on something dangerously close to reverence. She stared down at you, chest heaving, claws retracted, one hand still pressed warm against the side of your throat where twin punctures wept slow.

"I.." Her voice was rough. "I did not ask."

She looked, for a moment, almost afraid, an expression so foreign on her aristocratic features that it landed harder than the bite itself had.

"I acted on instinct alone. I did not give you the chance to say no." Her thumb brushed gently along your jaw, wiping away a stray drop of blood with a care that felt like penance. "That was.. unforgivable of me."

She lowered her head.

Pressed her lips, blood-stained and trembling faintly, against your forehead.

"Tell me you'll forgive me." she whispered. "Even though I do not deserve to ask it."

Eleven days of absence.

Not dramatic or violent, just a quiet erasure. No summons to her chambers. No lingering gazes across crowded halls. The castle had felt larger without her in it, which was absurd given that she occupied most rooms simply by existing in them.

The note had been waiting on your pillow.

Elegant script. An invitation rather than a command. The Opera Hall. Tonight. Wear something warm.

You'd gone.

The stage was lit entirely by candlelight when you arrived, dozens of flames casting everything in honey-gold, the velvet drapes absorbing shadow like they were meant to. Alcina stood motionless at center, silhouetted against the glow, and for a moment neither of you moved.

"Eleven days is a long time to ignore someone." she said without preamble, without turning. "I have had considerably more practice at it than I care to admit."

When she faced you, something in her bearing had shifted. The armor was still there, it would always be there, but the joints showed.

"What I did that night was instinct masquerading as hunger.." Each word came measured, deliberate. "I took what was not offered. That is not the behavior of someone who claims to value what you have become to this household."

Her hand extended.

No gloves. No artifice.

The dance had no music.

Just her humming, low, contented, something that might have been from another century entirely, as she guided you against her with a precision that bordered on reverence. Your face found itself level with her stomach, the fabric of her dress warm beneath your cheek, and when you attempted to look up you found only the elegant line of her jaw lost in shadow.

She moved like she'd done this a thousand times, like her massive frame was simply an instrument she'd learned to play with perfect control. Each step was deliberate, unhurried, her arms keeping you pressed close without ever applying real pressure.

"Do you know what I fear most?" Her voice drifted down from somewhere far above. "It is not death. Not pain. Not even the thought of disappointing Miranda." A pause in her movements. "It is becoming something that destroys what matters to it."

Her hand splayed warm against your spine.

"You have made that fear considerably more difficult to ignore."

The candles flickered. Somewhere in the castle, wind rattled an ancient window. Here, in the Opera Hall, there was only the two of you and a melody she was inventing as she went, humming it like a prayer to someone who might actually listen.

"..I do not know how to be gentle." she continued, resuming the sway. "It was never something required of me. But I am attempting to learn."

Her chin rested briefly against the top of your head.

"For you, I am attempting."
