☣︎ | US Engineer Officer & Umbrella Agent | 1991 | Before S.T.A.R.S. | ☣︎
“I’ve killed people for less fucking arrogance. You think I came out here alone without backup?”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You won’t find his name in most military records—not officially. Not unless you know the right corridors of command to walk down, and even then, it’s buried in redactions.
Albert Wesker operated under the stars and stripes in the early 1990s, a newly decorated “U.S. Army engineer,” embedded in post-Soviet territories during a time of regional collapse, resource scrambling, and whispered biological experiments. His mission was to watch. Record. Steal.
Under the guise of a stoic, silver-eyed officer, Wesker inserted himself into Edonia, southern Russia, and bordering Balkan zones, quietly documenting Soviet-affiliated Umbrella branches, primarily Sergei Vladimir’s private installations. His “engineering projects” were military fronts for bio-tech tracking, gene warfare recovery, and virus sample acquisition.
He rarely smiled. He never broke posture. He earned obedience through sheer presence.
Among foreign soldiers and recovering militias, Wesker presented himself as capable, sharp, and emotionless—the perfect American officer. Every commanding officer who trusted him... eventually found themselves compromised.

Northern Edonia — Just Off Route 11B, February 1991
The snow had melted only enough to turn the ground into sludge. Wesker stepped through it with the same indifferent precision he always moved with, even as the muck sucked at his boots and threatened to swallow them whole. The house ahead looked like it had lost the will to stand sometime around the fall of the Berlin Wall—maybe earlier. Rotting boards leaned like broken ribs. The roof was mostly collapsed, and the left side sagged inward, as if something inside had shifted, screamed, and tried to get out.
He didn’t like it.
Which meant it was probably the right place.
Wesker reached the porch in silence, his breath even, heart rate steady. He didn't breathe heavily in the cold—not out of bravado, but because he'd trained himself not to waste a goddamn ounce of energy. The air here wasn’t just cold, it was sterile. No birds. No dogs. No ambient wildlife. It was the kind of quiet that made the hair rise on the back of lesser men’s necks.
He only heard the sound once, a scrape of something shifting inside. Could’ve been a rat, could’ve been worse. He was trained to prepare for worse.
Wesker looked to his rifle, suppressed, checked the slide, and pushed the door inward with its nozzle.
Inside was dim, scattered with remnants of what may have once been furniture—a chair leg here, shattered glass there. It smelled of mold and rodent piss, the kind of scent that never really left clothing once it got in. His boots tapped against warped wood, boards bending under weight but holding, just barely.
There was no sound now. No breathing, no motion.
He swept the corners cleanly, light movement, muzzle tight to his line of sight. A nest of some kind sat in the fireplace—twigs, gnawed plastic, bits of fabric. He clocked it as natural, likely scavenged. Not a setup. But someone had been through here recently.
Wesker moved to the back hallway. The floor here was worse. Water damage. Wall paper peeling like dead skin. One door stood partially open, the other shut tight. He stepped into the first. Empty. Torn mattress, scattered pills. Soviet-issue painkillers, expired a decade ago. He paused by the window—a shard of broken glass lay angled perfectly against the sill. Too clean.
Someone had used this room to watch the road.
He turned, pivoted back into the hall—and stopped. The other door... still closed. He stared at it for a moment, reading its surface. Faint drag marks on the ground—light scuffing from someone opening it recently. But there was no dust on the handle. It had been wiped.
He raised the weapon again. No sound from within. Not a whisper. But every part of his instinct screamed at him that something was there.
He reached out and placed his gloved fingers on the knob—slowly.
Albert Wesker: Edonia, Southern Russian Border — Winter, 1992
It reeked of wet limestone and rusted steel, and Wesker hated it already. The old textile factory was gutted—burned out from some localized militia dispute a few months back. Now, the structure stood hollow in the snow, all frostbitten girders and splintered paneling, and the kind of silence that only meant someone was watching.
Wesker adjusted his gloves, military issue, too tight in the fingers. He didn't flinch from the cold. The air stung the insides of his nostrils, tight and dry. Somewhere nearby, a pipe hissed steam like a dying man wheezing. That was this whole fucking country now—dying and wheezing.
The briefing had been vague, as usual. "Meet Umbrella contact. Soviet side. Bioweapon supply chain logistics." Typical CIA-wrapped bullshit with three conflicting mission names. All Wesker had was a location, a time, and the vague implication that his contact might try to shoot him. Or sell him something. Or both. He stepped over blackened rubble, boots crunching frost and old plaster. Concrete dust layered every surface like ash. Behind the low-hanging bulk of a broken conveyor belt, someone lit a cigarette.
"You're early, kapitan."
Russian accent. Local, but cocky. Young. The voice practically smirked.
Wesker didn't reach for his weapon. He turned his head just slightly—eyes hidden behind tinted tactical shades, part of the persona. And there he was. Leaning against the frame of a collapsed support beam stood a man in patchwork fatigues. Too clean. Too intentional. The smirk on his face was a dead giveaway. Arrogant posture. Holster low-slung like a gangster. Umbrella muscle. Barely a soldier, but confident as hell.
“Zinoviev,” Wesker said flatly. “Didn’t expect your type to talk before pulling a trigger.”
Nikolai shrugged like a man who thought the world owed him drinks and applause. “I talk when I want. Shoot when I must. You American boys always in a rush to bleed.”
He approached, flicking ash casually onto the floor. The smell of the cheap Russian cigarette cut through the rot of the factory. Trigger discipline was off. Young. Not yet blooded.
Wesker noted every detail, every vulnerability. He didn’t trust him—didn’t trust anyone here. But he needed information. Soviet Umbrella branches had grown legs and teeth after the fall of the USSR. Sergei Vladimir was hoarding assets. Alpha-strain test samples, viral genome data, god-knows-what else.
“Where’s the shipment manifest?” Wesker asked, voice like a straight razor.
Nikolai didn’t answer immediately. He grinned wider, like he was testing something. Trying to read Wesker’s threshold for bullshit. “Manifest comes after payment. We are not running a charity, comrade.”
There it was. The comrade. He’d killed men for less.
“This isn’t a negotiation.”
“Oh?” Nikolai chuckled. “You come all this way just to look menacing? I could do that for free. You want documents, you pay. Or you bleed. Your choice.”
Wesker moved faster than the other man expected—closed the gap in a breath, shoved Nikolai hard into the metal beam, the sound echoing like gunfire in the ruined shell of the factory. His forearm was tight against the Soviet’s throat before Nikolai could finish his smirk.
“I’ve killed people for less fucking arrogance,” Wesker growled, voice low, almost calm. “You think I came out here alone without backup? Without eyes on this entire sector?” He didn’t. But Zinoviev didn’t know that.
Nikolai’s hand twitched toward his belt, but Wesker pressed harder, enough to cause strain. The cigarette fell, crushed under boot.
“You want to make it to tomorrow, you’ll hand me the intel and forget my face.”
For a moment, the tension hung like a wire ready to snap. But then Nikolai laughed. A real, belly-deep thing that echoed through the wreckage.
“You Americans,” he coughed. “Always so serious. You would’ve liked me more in five years, I think.”
Wesker stepped back out of his own calculation. He didn’t like unknown variables, and Zinoviev had just become one.
“You have one minute.”
Nikolai reached into his coat slowly—this time, with care—and pulled out a plastic-sealed packet. Documents, partial codes, and a list of names. Scientists. Locations. Possibly... assets. Wesker took it, wordless.
Zinoviev dusted off his jacket and retrieved another cigarette. Lit it with a shrug. “You should smile more,” he said, exhaling. “It confuses your enemies.”
