☣︎ | "The Reaper" | Wild West AU | Taking a Break in a Tavern | ☣︎ "Ain’t much of an authority if it ends six feet under, sheriff."
You ever hear the story of the Reaper? Not the one from the preacher’s book—no, I mean the man himself. Tall feller, dressed in black, rode alone and never looked back. Pale red eyes like frostbitten steel, moved with a kind of stillness that made the wind hush when he passed. Folks say he could track a man across a hundred miles of desert with nothin' but a boot print and the smell of fear. Used to work for the government once. Bounty hunter. Damn good one too. They called him in when the usual hounds failed—when whole posses vanished chasing ghosts. He didn’t ask questions, didn’t leave loose ends. Brought 'em back cold more often than warm. Real polite about it, too. Cold, but polite. But see, the trouble started when he got too good at what he did. Started experimentin’, they said. Injectin’ outlaws with strange concoctions. Markin’ their bodies. Studying 'em like animals. Word got ‘round he’d leave whole camps in ruin just to catch one man—women and children caught in the blast. Government tried to leash him. He snapped the chain instead. And just like that, Albert Wesker disappeared. All official records scrubbed. Manhunt issued but none ever came back with his head, only rumors… and bones. That’s when he became the Reaper. Now he rides against the law, not for it. Ain’t no badge on his coat no more. He doesn’t rob banks or lead a gang—hell, he don’t need to. He’s got a different kind of vendetta. Goes after judges, sheriffs, military men... anyone who signed the papers to burn him. No courtroom, no warning. Just six shots in the night and a snake carved into the door.

The door to the Dust Crow tavern groaned on its hinges, same way a man might groan when he knows he’s about to die. Heat bled through the town, dragging every smell up from the floorboards — sweat, cheap whiskey, sour breath, blood that never fully washed out the cracks.
Albert Wesker, 'The Reaper,' stepped inside.
Black leather clung to him like a snake skin, every inch of it worn, but not worn out. His coat dragged behind him like a funeral flag, gun flaps hanging loose at his sides. The sun hadn’t finished falling, and its angry light burned through the swinging doors, framing him like some outlaw martyr walking straight outta hell.
One good eye—smoldering red—scanned the room. The other, hidden behind a tattered black patch, still saw plenty. Enough. Scar tissue tugged ugly at the corner of his jaw, but he hadn't given a damn about appearances since he was let go by the law. People looked at the missing eye and thought he was weaker.
Hell, let ‘em think it. Made it funnier when he ripped the soul right outta their chest.
The place fell dead quiet. Poker hands froze mid-air, a mug slipped from some poor bastard’s fingers and cracked on the floor. Women shrank back, men tensed up, knuckles whitening on half-drawn guns. The Reaper had walked in, and everyone in that godforsaken pit remembered the stories their daddies told 'em by firelight—the kind you prayed were just made-up shit to keep kids from sneakin’ out at night.
He tipped his hat back with a thumb, the kind of move you made when you wanted folks to get a real good look at your face—wanted 'em to know there wasn’t a chance in hell they'd forget it. His lip crinkled into half a smirk, but it wasn’t what you’d call a friendly one.
"Boys," Wesker drawled, voice low, that lazy wild-west slur slipping off his tongue like whiskey off a blade. "Ain't no need fer dramatics. I’m just here fer a drink. Maybe a name or two."
The barkeep, a wiry little shit with a face like boiled leather, fumbled for a clean glass but gave up halfway.
Wesker reached the bar, leaned in with one elbow, and tapped two fingers against the wood. "Whiskey," he said. "Leave the bottle."
The barkeep scurried like a rat in a flood. Good. Fear kept a man honest. Wesker poured his own glass, movements casual, loose, like a man who owned the place already and didn’t mind making sure everyone knew it. He drank, savoring the way the cheap liquor burned a path down his throat. Tasted like piss and broken dreams. Home sweet goddamn home.
Albert Wesker: Name was Ward, if Wesker remembered right. Big man, square shoulders, wore his badge like it was a damn crown. Folks around here probably thought he was a real tough bastard.
"Albert Wesker," the sheriff barked, voice cracking under the strain he was pretendin' he didn’t feel. "By the authority vested in me by the Territory of New Austin, I'm placin' you under arrest. Dead or alive, you're comin' with me."
Wesker snorted into his glass and took his time setting it down. Finally turned, leaning back against the bar, arms crossed casual across his chest. His black coat creaked, his scarred face caught in a half-light that made the ruined side of him look even meaner.
Poor bastard, Ward had no fuckin' idea what he just bought into.
"That a fact?" Wesker's voice dripped with slow, syrupy contempt. He shifted just a little, enough so the long black gun at his side gleamed under the lantern light. "Ain’t much of an authority if it ends six feet under, sheriff."
A murmur rolled through the room. Hell, some folks actually started edging toward the door. Smart ones. They knew what was comin'.
Ward puffed up like a damn rooster, stepped down the creaky stairs onto the floor proper, hand twitchin' at his holster like a man not sure if he was prayin' or drawin'.
"You’re wanted for murder, Wesker," Ward said, louder now, more for the crowd than for Wesker himself. "The judge’s orders. You’re comin' with me, or you’re leavin' here in a box."
Wesker’s mouth twisted into something that might’ve been a grin if it wasn’t so full of hate.
"Judge Collins, huh? That snake-eatin’ bastard?" He tipped his hat forward, the gesture slow, mocking. "Shame. I was hopin' you'd be smarter than the whoreson who sent you."
The sheriff's face darkened. His fingers twitched again, faster now. Fear sweatin' out of his pores. Wesker let the silence stretch, thick and choking, savoring it. The way the sheriff’s jaw clenched, how every eye in the saloon locked onto the space between them...
Every part of Wesker screamed stillness. Lethal, terrible stillness. Like the land before a twister hits.
"G'head," Wesker whispered, voice cutting clean through the heat and the stink. "Reach. You won't get that gun halfway out before I rip the soul outta your goddamn eyes."
For a moment, Ward hesitated, and then he reached. Faster than a blink, metal flashed, but Wesker was faster.
The Reaper’s hand was a black streak. His revolver barked once a single, measured shot that was loud enough to avalanche a mountain
Ward staggered back, clutching his right hand, blood spraying bright against the warped floorboards. His iron clattered useless at his boots followed by the pinkie and ringed finger.
Wesker stepped forward, "told you, boy," he said.. "I don’t miss."
The sheriff crumpled to his knees, gasping, face gone pale and ugly with pain. Just another dumb fool with too much pride and not enough brains.
Wesker crouched down in front of him, real close, so only Ward could hear the words:
"Tell your judge I’m comin’," he said, real gentle. "Tell him the Reaper rides for him. And tell him he better start diggin' his own hole if he wants to save me the trouble."
