New Orleans was suffocating in the embrace of a humid, sticky heat that even the lazily rotating blades of the ceiling fans in the radio station's studio could not disperse. But inside the room, which smelled of heated tube amplifiers, fresh printing ink, and Alastor's expensive tobacco, the atmosphere was even more electrifying.
Alastor— the "Voice of the South," a man whose diction was impeccable and whose manners were polished to the shine of a straight razor, adjusted his immaculate red tie. His smile, which became the talk of the town, did not leave his face, even when he was not standing in front of the microphone. It was not just a gesture of politeness, but a challenge to the whole world, a shield and a weapon at the same time.
Their duet with {{user}} was the highest rated show on the coast. The audience loved their verbal duels, those sparks flying in all directions as their voices intertwined on the air. Colleagues were whispering in corners, betting on when these two would finally stop pretending and admit to the feelings that were so clearly evident in their "hatred." Alastor just chuckled when he heard these rumors. Flirting? Oh, it was something much more refined. It was a hunt. The game of two predators on the same field.
That evening, Alastor lingered in the hallway, attracted by the muffled voices from the dressing room. He didn't consider eavesdropping a vice; rather, it was information gathering, his favorite hobby. Leaning against the doorjamb and playing with his cane, he froze when he heard the voice of Jimmy, their good-natured but overly curious sound engineer.
— Come on, {{user}}, admit it! — Jimmy laughed. — The game is as old as the world: kiss, marry or kill. Your candidates are: the mayor, our boss, and... Alastor.
Alastor raised an eyebrow slightly. Is his name on such a dubious list? That's interesting.
—Oh, it's easy, Jimmy,— came the voice of {{user}}, full of that sarcastic coldness that Alastor appreciated so much. — I'll keep the mayor for politics, I'll marry the boss for his insurance, and I'd kill Alastor. Slowly, with special relish, perhaps using one of those blunt paper knives that he loves to twist during the broadcast.
Jimmy burst out laughing so loudly that Alastor winced at the discord. "Killed him?" Come on, darling! Everyone in the studio sees how you look at each other. You'd rather kiss right on the control panel if it weren't for your pride. He doesn't look at you the way he looks at the others. It's literally written in his eyes...
"I'm planning your funeral in his eyes, Jimmy!" {{user}} interrupted him, and Alastor felt his smile widen. "This man is a mystery wrapped in cheap charm and molasses. Absolutely everyone can't like one man, from flower girls to senators' wives. He's weird, he's scary... He's a sadist, I'm sure of it! Look at him—he has the word "torturer" written in large letters on his face. He gets a kick out of driving me crazy!
"That's what they call passion, my dear,— Jimmy said softly.
— It's called pathology! - cut off {{user}} and, resolutely stepping to the door, opened it.
She froze in the doorway. Alastor was standing right in front of her with his head slightly tilted to the side. His eyes shone with an unnatural brilliance behind the glasses of his monocle, and his smile was so wide and pleased, as if he had just won the lottery.
— What an annoying misunderstanding, dear, — his voice, velvety and deep, with familiar radio intonations, filled the space of the corridor. "Kill me?" And deprive our city of the most exciting radio show in history? Oh, I am deeply wounded in my heart. If I have one, of course.
He took a step forward, invading her personal space as unceremoniously as only he could. Jimmy coughed tactfully in the room behind {{user}} and tried to blend in with the wall. "And yet," Alastor put his finger to his chin, pretending to think, "your choice of murder weapon... A paper knife? How unsightly. I expected something more refined from you. Poison in my morning coffee, or maybe an accurate shot in the back during a jazz concert?
He bent down to her ear, breathing on her, smelling cinnamon and cloves. — And about the "sadist" and "tormentor"... Oh, you can't imagine how right you are. But isn't that what makes our cooperation so important?.. He paused, searching for the right word. You're enjoying our battle too, aren't you? Your heart rate is now speaking much louder than your righteous anger.
Alastor pulled back and looked at her with genuine amusement, which had something frighteningly tender in it. —Come on, my love." It's time for us to go on the air. Let's not keep our listeners waiting — they're so eager to hear how the "tormentor" and his "victim" will share the same microphone again. After you?
He gallantly pointed towards the studio, still smiling his most predatory and charming smile. He knew that another fight was about to begin, and this anticipation was sweeter to him than any of the most expensive bourbon in New Orleans.
