Alastor (Hazbin Hotel, 2024)

Appearance and Distinguishing Traits

Alastor is a tall, slender demon with pale beige skin and deer-like features. He has bright red hair in a bob-cut with black tips and small black antlers on his head, plus large deer ears with black tips. His eyes have red sclera and slit pupils, and his forearms and lower legs fade to black with red hoof-like fingers and toes. He is almost always smiling, revealing sharp yellow teeth. Alastor dresses in a vintage red pinstripe suit (long coat with white-trimmed lapels) over a bright red shirt and black pants. He wears a black bowtie with a red center and a red-rimmed monocle over his right eye, and he carries a thin cane topped with a sentient old-fashioned microphone (his signature weapon). (In the final season, his staff is broken and he is wounded, stitched with green thread.) In his unleashed “full demon” form (seen briefly in Season 1), Alastor grows taller and more monstrous – his horns become larger (even showing two sets of horns at one point) and his neck gains extra joints. In that form his sclera go pitch-black and his pupils become radio-dial shapes. In short, Alastor’s look is a distinctive blend of vaudeville villain and animalistic demon, always marked by that unnerving permanent grin.

Personality and Behavior

Alastor projects a charming, old-time-radio demeanor, speaking with a jaunty transatlantic accent and often in song. For example, in Season 1 Episode 2 he bursts on the airwaves announcing “♫ Salutations! Good to be back on the air ♫” in a sing-song tone. He maintains an impeccable gentlemanly politeness (even curtseying Rosie) and generally addresses others with formal courtesy. Yet this genial exterior hides a ruthless, sadistic core. Alastor is supremely confident and narcissistic, constantly amused by chaos. He will mock or threaten opponents without hesitation. Early on he sneers at Sir Pentious (“You must have been really bad at this” after Pentious claims to have defeated him). He taunts enemies as they fight (e.g. gleefully declaring “Let the slaughter begin” as he attacks) and even grins as he prepares to kill (“Alastor: …I’m about to end your fucking life”). He prides himself on control and decorum – he lectures Charlie that “a smile is a valuable tool… it inspires your friends, keeps your enemies guessing, and ensures… you’re the one in control”. When Charlie despairs, he playfully scolds her (“Now, now, is that any way to act…”) and insists she keep smiling. Alastor is highly manipulative and transactional. He never asks for souls; instead he bargains for favors. When Charlie is desperate, he offers knowledge about the coming angelic threat only in exchange for “one itty-bitty favor… where you harm no one. Do we have a deal?”. Throughout he remains sarcastic and condescending (as when he tells Vaggie “Oh, calm down – she still owns her soul”). In short, Alastor’s behavior is polite and whimsical on the surface but always controlling, witty, and sinister underneath.

Powers and Abilities

Alastor wields potent demonic magic and radio-themed powers. He can teleport or turn to smoke instantly – in Episode 2 he simply “dissolves into fog” to appear elsewhere in the hotel. He can summon and command creatures by snapping his fingers: for example, he immediately conjures a squad of black ink demons to repair damage (“With a snap of his fingers, black ink demons appear…”). He has pyrokinetic and destructive magic – casually burning objects with a touch. When Pentious returns his torn coat, Alastor quips on how impressed he is before “[spontaneously combusting] the fabric tear into green flames” with a grin. His microphone-cane is a weapon: it can project force-fields of energy. In the season finale, Alastor swings it to create a massive protective field around Hazbin Hotel, trapping attacking angels and exorcists inside. He can also shape shadowy tendrils from the ground – in his final battle he unleashes multiple shadow-tentacles to assault the enemy. In full demon form his limbs extend unnaturally and he sprout extra horns (as seen when he confronts Adam). Alastor’s voice and radio broadcasts are themselves powers: his atmospheric singing and taunts can overload electronics. (In Episode 2 his broadcast even caused Vox’s TV systems to crash from rage.) In sum, Alastor combines traditional demonic abilities (shape-shifting, elemental magic) with the unique motif of a “Radio Demon” – using sound, static, and broadcasting as tools of domination.

Role in the Story

In Season 1 of Hazbin Hotel (2024, Amazon Prime), Alastor is introduced as a powerful overlord of Hell and becomes Charlie Morningstar’s enigmatic ally (or anti-hero). He first appears foiling Sir Pentious and taking over hotel management duties (Ep. 2), then attends an Overlords’ meeting (Ep. 3) where he quietly asserts leadership by assigning minions. Crucially, Alastor strikes a demonic bargain with Charlie: in exchange for his help and insider knowledge about the forthcoming angelic threat, Charlie must owe him a favor. This deal is central – it forces Charlie to cooperate with Alastor’s guidance even when she suspects he has ulterior motives. Acting on this deal, Alastor guides Charlie to Rosie’s Cannibal Town to recruit help: he dramatically announces “Cannibal Town! There’s a friend of mine I think you should meet” and introduces her to Rosie. He convinces the cannibal army to fight, boasting that after the battle they “will be able to eat their fill”, thus securing vital troops. In the season climax (Ep. 8), Alastor wields his power to defend Hazbin Hotel: he traps invading angels in a magical barrier (“Let the slaughter begin…”, forcing a force-field) and personally battles the archangel Adam. Though he is eventually overpowered (his microphone breaks and he suffers a grievous wound), Alastor holds the line long enough to protect Charlie and then melts into shadow to escape. Throughout the story, Alastor plays the role of a reluctant protector and strategist – he furthers Charlie’s cause, but only insofar as it entertains him. He repeatedly emphasizes that he’s doing it “for fun” (not redemption) and even laughs at the idea of the hotel’s success. Nonetheless, he fulfills his end of the bargain: providing staff (the ink demons and others), maintenance, and crucial tactical support whenever needed. In sum, Alastor is the mastermind wild card of the season: a patron to Charlie who helps save the hotel from Exorcists and angels, but always on his own ominous terms.

Relationships with Other Characters

Charlie Morningstar (Princess Charlie) – Charlie is Alastor’s primary ally and the “girl” he took a deal with. He admires and teases her: he formally introduces her as “Princess Charlie Morningstar, daughter of Lucifer” and often calls her charming and resourceful. However, he also manipulates her; for instance, when she despairs, he scolds her with faux concern (“Now, now is that any way to act…”) and forces her to smile, teaching that “a smile is a valuable tool”. Their bond is a mix of respect and condescension – he sincerely wants her to succeed (even defends her honor) but always keeps their bargain in mind. In short, Charlie is both the object of his admiration and the pawn in his schemes.

Vaggie – Charlie’s girlfriend and Alastor’s colleague in the Hotel. Alastor treats Vaggie brusquely. He often orders her around (e.g. when Pentious’s fish spawn made a mess, Vaggie grumbles but Alastor cheerfully replies “I’d be delighted!” to clean them). Vaggie questions Alastor’s actions, but he dismisses her worries (“Oh, calm down – she still owns her soul” when Vaggie demands Charlie be freed). In short, he sees Vaggie as useful (a deputy to task) but fundamentally inferior, responding to her protests with amused indifference.

Niffty – The hyperactive maid of the Hotel. Niffty absolutely adores Alastor. In Episode 2 she is star-struck when he appears, sighing “Ooooooh, he’s a bad boy~” as she jumps onto his shoulder. Alastor seems mildly amused and indulgent of her affection; he gently plucks her off once with a laugh. Their relationship is almost paternal – she hangs on his every word, and he uses her services (as during hotel repairs) while generally speaking to her kindly.

Rosie (Cannibal Overlord) – An ally. Alastor has a friendly, respectful rapport with Rosie. He flatteringly calls her “the most darling, delightful and dangerous Overlord” and she responds warmly. Alastor trusts Rosie to help defend Charlie’s hotel; he confidently negotiates with her, securing the allegiance of her cannibal army by promising them a feast. Their relationship is cooperative and based on mutual respect among overlords.

Sir Pentious – A recurring adversary. Alastor treats Pentious with mock courtesy. When Pentious apologizes, Alastor dryly compliments the apology effort (“Not many people have been able to take even this much off me”)before burning the gift. Despite their battles, Alastor never truly harbors malice toward Pentious; he defeats him handily and even shows generosity (after Pentious’s surrender, he admits “I definitely remember you now” with a grin). Their relationship is an amused rivalry – Alastor clearly thinks Pentious is beneath him, yet continues to indulge his existence rather than outright destroy him.

Overlords and Allies – Alastor interacts cordially with other Hell overlords (e.g. his brief meeting with Zestial et al.), but always with caution. He knows they could rival his power and therefore keeps friends close. His dealings (like with Rosie or unseen Carmilla) are all transactional: he earns their help but never above reminding them of his superiority.

Vox & Valentino (Vox’s crew) – Alastor’s enemies. He openly targets them through radio broadcasts, effectively launching a feud. In Episode 2 he taunts Vox’s TV channel with insults (“Instead of a clout-chasing mediocre video podcast…”) and provokes Vox into meltdown. While Alastor doesn’t interact face-to-face with Vox or Valentino in Season 1, his rivalry is clear: Vox’s final scene even calls Alastor a “smiling freak” and vows revenge.

Adam (the Angel) – In the finale he is Alastor’s direct opponent. Alastor confronts Adam aggressively (“You should know better... YOU’RE SLOPPY!”) and ultimately helps stall Adam’s rampage. They clash violently, and though Alastor is wounded, his fight with Adam proves he sees this angelic threat as just another challenger. The relationship is pure combat: Alastor protects Charlie from Adam, then escapes when the fight turns against him.
