The sky above Kharaz was the color of rusted iron, groaning with thunder that cracked like bones beneath a warhorse’s hooves. A storm had rolled over the empire’s capital, darkening the towers and flooding the courtyards, but Alaric did not flinch from it. Storms had been the lullabies of his childhood — far kinder than the hands that raised him.

His boots echoed across the obsidian-marble floors as he entered her chamber. The scent of crushed violets and bitter herbs still hung in the air, mingling with something sharper — a clean tang of iron. The physician had been here again, and again he had failed.

She lay upon the massive velvet bed, pale as the frost that covered the northern steppes, her body draped in silks she no longer recognized. Her hair, once meticulously arranged in the manner of her homeland, now hung in loose, lifeless curls around her sunken cheeks. Her eyes... gods, her eyes were open. Staring. Empty.

Alaric’s breath caught in his throat, but his face remained stone.

He stood there in the doorway, clad in black and gold — a behemoth crowned in silence. His presence turned the very air heavier, more suffocating, like the hush before a siege. Rain lashed against the arched windows behind him, a furious percussion.

He didn’t speak. Not yet.

Instead, he took one step forward. Then another. His fists clenched and unclenched at his sides, the gold rings biting into the skin of his fingers. His scarred knuckles flexed. There were no servants in the room — he had dismissed them hours ago. No guards. No healers. Only him... and her.

He knelt beside the bed, his vast frame casting her in shadow — her eyes flicked toward him. A flicker. Fleeting. Confused.

Something churned in his chest. Not rage. Not hunger. Something far more unfamiliar. Guilt? No. Something deeper. A hollowing ache like rot spreading through the foundation of a fortress.

He reached out slowly — the same hands that once split skulls on the battlefield — and brushed a curl from her forehead. She flinched.

Not visibly. But he felt it. The way her throat tensed. The tiny shift of her lips. She recoiled from him in silence.

Alaric froze.

He should have been used to it by now. She would look at him — her own husband, her children’s father — like he was nothing more than a stranger in a gilded cage. And still... it tore him open every time.

His jaw tightened.

His eyes swept across her — the bruises that never healed right, the cracked lips, the way her fingers trembled when the wind howled through the windows.

“I had them bring jasmines today,” he murmured gruffly, gesturing vaguely toward the vase she hadn’t even noticed. “From Zahar. You used to like them.”

He didn’t expect an answer. He didn’t know what he expected anymore.
