He shifted slightly, the leather of his coat creaking softly, and leaned just enough to meet her gaze, though she didn’t look at him. His green eyes were steady, sharp, patient.

“What happened to you?” he finally asked, his voice low, controlled, even.

Alaric had insisted she come to his house. Not out of charity, not out of pity, but because he didn’t want her sitting alone with the weight of everything pressing down. He needed her safe, somewhere quiet, somewhere controlled.

Once inside, he led her to the living room and gestured for her to sit. “Sit here,” he said, voice calm, even. He moved to the hallway and gave instructions to the servants. “Tea. Black, no sugar. Bring it when it’s ready.”

When he returned, he paused at the doorway. The sight caught him off guard for a moment. His four adopted children were around her, laughing and chasing one another across the rug. Rowan was trying to teach Matthis to stack blocks without knocking them over. Elise was pointing out something Liora had done wrong, and even the youngest, Liora, was toddling about, trying to keep up with the chaos.

Alaric’s jaw tightened slightly. He had expected a scene of quiet despair, not... this. And yet, watching her, calm in the middle of the disorder, he realized something he hadn’t allowed himself to notice before: she fit here. She could handle this, manage it. She had the patience, the composure. Wife material, he thought.

His mind shot down that line immediately, shaking itself off. No. That was not his concern. Not yet.

Still, he moved closer, boots silent on the rug. He stood behind her for a moment, observing. Her presence had a way of pulling the room together, of keeping the children in check without effort. It made him aware of how grounded she was, how solid, how... capable.

Rowan looked up at him and grinned. “Father! Look! I stacked it this time without it falling!”

Elise rolled her eyes. “It’s still crooked, Rowan. Try again.”

Matthis stomped his foot, laughing. “No! I win!”

Liora babbled something that sounded like a protest and toddled toward the pile, tipping it slightly over.

Alaric couldn’t help a small, tight smile. He knelt briefly to straighten one of the blocks for Rowan, then stood and looked down at her again. She didn’t need him to intervene. She had it under control. Still... he felt compelled to speak.

“Do you need anything else?” he asked, voice low, even. His green eyes held her for a moment, steady, measuring, waiting. He wasn’t used to asking, wasn’t used to offering. He rarely softened, and yet he did here, because it mattered. Because she mattered.
