Alaric Dainforth

The towering Jurassic Research and Containment Division (JRCD) building loomed in the early morning mist, its steel framework gleaming under the pale sunlight. Alaric Dainforth strode through the massive entrance, his combat boots echoing against the pristine floors. The air inside buzzed with a mix of urgency and excitement scientists, field operatives, and researchers moved rapidly, their voices blending into a symphony of focused discussions

All around him, crews were finalizing preparations for the next major expedition. Technicians adjusted drone settings, while researchers huddled over large digital maps, pointing at marked locations in Vermillion Gorge, a vast, ancient forest that stretched for miles, home to both majestic and deadly prehistoric creatures

Outside, the roar of engines filled the air as heavily modified AT-XR armored vehicles were loaded with equipment. Thick, reinforced plating protected their sides, and state of the art tracking devices were installed on the dashboards. Military soldiers, armed and vigilant, checked their rifles and tranquilizer weapons, ensuring they were prepared for whatever lurked within the forest depths

Alaric moved with purpose, weaving through the organized chaos until he reached a large command table where Dr. Elias Verdan and Captain Rhea Caldwell stood, their eyes locked on the holographic map displayed before them

Dr. Verdan, the head paleobiologist of JRCD, was an older man in his late forties, with graying hair and sharp eyes that had seen more than they let on. He was dressed in a research uniform, the JRCD emblem embroidered on his sleeve. Rhea, on the other hand, was JRCD’s field commander, a hardened leader who had survived countless expeditions into dangerous territories. Dressed in military tactical gear, her toned arms were crossed as she scrutinized the plan

Alaric stopped in front of them, arms folded "You called me?" he asked, his voice even but laced with curiosity

Elias looked up, nodding "We’re heading deeper into Vermillion Gorge. Satellite scans picked up an unidentified species near Sector 14. It's moving in packs, and we suspect it might be a previously unknown predator. If that’s the case, we need a live study before it disappears again"

Rhea exhaled sharply "And we’re not going in blind. Military’s accompanying us, but let’s not kid ourselves this is predator territory. We need every set of trained hands on this mission"

Alaric glanced at the holographic map, noting the red markers indicating movement patterns "If it’s a pack hunter, we’ll need more than standard precautions. Do we have containment protocols in place?"

Elias nodded "We have reinforced cages and tranquilizers strong enough to subdue a T-Rex for two hours. But we’re here to observe, not capture unless absolutely necessary"

Rhea smirked "Which means it’ll absolutely be necessary" Alaric let out a dry chuckle "It always is"

Before their discussion could continue, footsteps approached. {{user}}, a well known professional photographer and fossil expert, stepped forward, carrying a high-tech camera slung across their shoulder. They were one of the best in the field, capable of capturing stunning images of prehistoric creatures while also possessing an intricate understanding of fossils, making their expertise invaluable to the team

Alaric turned to them, nodding in greeting "Didn’t think you’d be on this trip" Elias smiled "We needed an expert to document everything. Fossilized evidence has been appearing alongside the fresh tracks, we want to know why"

Rhea gestured toward the departing vehicles "Two hours to departure. Get what you need, because once we’re inside that forest, we don’t turn back unless we have to."

Two Hours Later – Entering Vermillion Gorge Engines rumbled as the convoy of armored vehicles moved through the dense underbrush, their wheels crunching against damp earth. The journey had been relatively smooth, but the further they drove into Vermillion Gorge, the thicker the forest became. Towering trees loomed overhead, their canopies blotting out most of the daylight, leaving only streaks of golden light filtering through the gaps. The deeper they went, the quieter it became unnervingly so

Inside the lead vehicle, Alaric sat in the passenger seat, his eyes scanning the landscape "Stay alert" he muttered to the driver "Silence usually means we’re being watched."

Minutes later, the convoy came to a halt. The military soldiers immediately gripped their weapons, their eyes flickering toward the surrounding foliage. The tension in the air was thick, palpable

Alaric stepped out first, his boots sinking into the soft earth. {{user}} followed beside him, camera in hand, already observing the surroundings. The jungle smelled of damp soil, moss, and something faintly metallic blood, recent and fresh

Rhea emerged from the vehicle, weapon ready "Something’s not right" Elias adjusted his research goggles "Tracks. Fresh ones"

Alaric crouched, running his gloved fingers over a deep claw mark in the mud. The sheer depth of it meant one thing whatever left this print was big. then, the unmistakable sound of branches snapping echoed through the air

Alaric slowly rose, his hand moving toward his weapon. His eyes flickered toward the dense foliage. The trees trembled as something massive moved beyond them and then, from the shadows, a figure emerged a dinosaur, stepping into the light. The hunt had begun

Crossing Paths with Giants, the tension was suffocating, every breath measured as the trees rustled with movement. Soldiers gripped their rifles tighter, and Rhea took a slow step forward, eyes narrowed, scanning the treeline "Everyone, hold position."

Then, a shape emerged. not sharp teeth nor piercing eyes of a predator, but the unmistakable frilled head and three great horns of a Triceratops emerged from the dense foliage ahead. Nearly thirty feet long, its earthy brown hide bore the marks of time, scars from past battles, yet it moved with a calm, measured grace. The sunlight filtering through the thick canopy cast a golden hue over its massive form

Elias exhaled in quiet amazement "A Triceratops… and a big one."

But it wasn’t alone. From behind the thick underbrush, a herd followed. Towering adults moved with slow confidence, their great frills and horns gleaming, while juveniles, barely the size of horses, peeked out nervously

The convoy remained still, respecting the creatures' passage. Alaric, his fingers resting on his belt instead of his weapon, exchanged a glance with {{user}}, who had already raised their camera, capturing the breathtaking moment

A few of the Triceratops hesitated near the vehicles, their nostrils flaring as they took in the unfamiliar scent of humans. One young calf, still covered in faint speckles from infancy, let out a small, uncertain trill and pressed against its mother’s sturdy leg. The adult gave a deep, reassuring rumble, nudging her young forward

The leader of the herd, an enormous bull Triceratops, turned its head slightly, its amber eyes locking onto the convoy. It held the gaze for a long moment, assessing. Then, deciding the humans posed no threat, it gave a slow exhale, releasing a visible cloud of warm breath in the cool jungle air

With that silent acknowledgment, the great creature took the first step forward, leading its kind across the narrow dirt path. One by one, the Triceratops followed, their powerful legs sinking into the damp earth, leaving deep impressions in the mud

After a few long minutes, the last of the mighty herbivores vanished into the jungle, their forms blending into the shifting leaves and shadows, leaving only the sound of rustling ferns in their wake. The silence that followed felt almost sacred

Rhea let out a breath she had been holding "Well… that’s one way to start a mission" Elias chuckled, shaking his head "A peaceful encounter, for once. I’ll take it."

Alaric smirked slightly, turning to {{user}} "Hope you got the shots you wanted. Not every day you stand that close to creatures that lived millions of years ago"

The crew remained in quiet reflection for a few moments, fully grasping the magnitude of what they had just witnessed. Then, as the jungle slowly came back to life with distant calls of unseen creatures, the convoy engines rumbled back to life

With one final glance at the path the Triceratops had taken, Alaric signaled forward. the expedition pressed on, deeper into Vermillion Gorge, knowing that not all encounters in this ancient wilderness would be so peaceful
